It’s Been a Tough Month A lot has happened over the past month that has saddened us all. We lost FDNY Lt. Michael R. Davidson in a Harlem fire, we lost seven military personnel in a helicopter crash that happened in western Iraq, four of whom were locals and included Master Sergeant Christopher J. Raguso, an FDNY firefighter and a volunteer firefighter with the Commack Fire Department on Long Island; and Major Christopher Zanetis, an FDNY Fire Marshal. We also added to the list of FDNY firefighters who past away from cancer that was attributed to their service on 9/11 and the months following this attack on our country.

As the month progressed, there was a fire at Trump Towers that claimed the life of a person who lived on the 50th floor of the building, and also injured several firefighters who were faced with the task of battling this blaze. If you are reading this editorial, you may know what it is like to push in on a violent fire.

I ask you, would a sprinkler system have resulted in a different outcome for this fire?

The upper floors of this building were not sprinklered. The building was completed in

1983, several years before sprinkler systems were mandated. Owners of older, residential high-rises are required to add the systems when major renovations take place.

Since June 2014, the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs have been asking for a change in the laws that effect home sprinkler systems. They have been asking our politicians to support laws that require home sprinkler systems. Every year in New York, more than 100 residents die as a result of a home fire and more than 1,000 are injured severely enough to require hospitalization.

The lack of home sprinklers puts everyone, including firefighters, at risk.

According to the NYSAFC, “the presence of a home fire sprinkler system has been proven to cut the risk of dying in a fire by 82 percent and reduce property loss by 70 percent. In addition, a home fire sprinkler system will stop a fire from growing and spreading out of control, preserving the integrity of the structure and preventing firefighter injuries and deaths.”

Fire News has informed you of The New York Sprinkler Initiative. This is a group of fire and life safety advocates, urging the New

York State Fire Prevention and Building Code Council (NYS Code Council) to adopt the most recent building codes. Lightweight truss construction and the use of engineered lumber in construction are a danger to firefighters. Sprinklers could keep a fire in check until firefighters arrive on scene. If sprinklers are installed, residents will have time to escape the fire and firefighters will have more time to fight the fire before it grows out of control.

The fire at Trump Towers is proof that the lack of a sprinkler system puts life at risk. I urge you to visit the NYS Association of Fire Chiefs website to read about Fire Sprinkler Initiative News. … Dennis

BLAIRSTOWN HOSE CO. #1 2NDANNUAL DRAFTING COMPETITION

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR I’m happy to see New Jersey hospitals and police departments teaming up to save lives from opioid overdoses. Hospital systems in Camden County are the latest to announce their intention to buy the opioid reversal agent naloxone, or Narcan, in bulk and provide it at low cost to their police departments. In other counties, Union and Middlesex, for example, replacement kits have been supplied free to the police departments since the programs began in 2016.

I don’t understand, however, why EMS organizations — particularly volunteer agencies — are not included in the naloxone distribution plan.

We, too, are in the business of saving lives, but many volunteer EMS squads, which rely heavily on donations, find the cost of Narcan prohibitive. The same goes for epinephrine auto injectors (EpiPens) used to counter allergic reactions.

Emergency responders statewide should have discounted, or possibly free, access to such life-saving medications for their organizations.

Perhaps we can use this opportunity to start such a conversation, to help ensure lives don’t depend on whether responders can afford the antidote.

Roxbury, Netcong Handle Car Carrier Fire

Recently, the Roxbury and Netcong Fire Companies were dispatched to Route 206 and Goldmine Road for a car carrier on fire.

The first-due engine from Netcong stretched a line and, with the help of two Mount Olive fire officials, started knocking down the

fire as Roxbury units arrived. The second engine company secured a hydrant and units had the fire under control within a half hour.

Morris County HazMat was called due to fuel leaking from the truck.

Fatality at Ridgefield Park 3-Alarmer

Ridgefield Park firefighters had their hands full when they arrived at a fully involved house fire on February 7, 2018, on Brinkerhoff Street. First arriving police officers attempted to gain entry but were unable to due to heavy smoke and fire. As fire companies arrived, a second alarm was requested, handlines were stretched but firefighters were quickly forced out as the building became well involved. With an occupant unaccounted for and heavy fire conditions, command requested a third alarm. Numerous outside hand

lines, a ladder pipe and two blitz guns were put into operation. One firefighter suffered minor injuries and was transported to the hospital and, after crews were able to re-enter the building, the body of the occupant was located. The cause of the fire was under investigation however it has been reported that the owner lived off the grid and relied on wood burning stoves, butane heaters, generators and solar panels.

Pemberton 3-Alarmer Firefighters from the Borough of Pemberton, Pemberton Township, and surrounding communities in Burlington County, responded to the Pemberton Bypass on a bitter cold December 29, 2017, for a report of a structure fire. Units arrived to find a well involved two-story, wood frame, single-family set back off the road. First-in apparatus laid in off the highway with one quint taking a position on the Bravo-Charlie side with multiple handlines put into service. The job was complicated by solar panels on the roof. The operation was supported by a water tender task force from throughout Burlington County, with three alarms needed to combat the fire and cold temperatures.

House, Tree 2-Car MVA On December 23, 2017, Clifton Engine 1, Ladder 3 and EMS-2 responded to Gregory Avenue for a two-car MVA with one car into the front of a home.

The SUV made slight contact with the front porch of the home, causing no structural damage, while the sedan hit a tree. EMS-2 transported one patient to the hospital.

Nutley Knocks House Fire On December 29, 2017, Nutley Engine 1 and Ladder 1 responded to Cedar Street for a reported house fire. Command 101 arrived to smoke showing from the eaves.

Engines 2, 3 and 4 responded to the scene while mutual aid was called from Bloomfield, Belleville and Lyndhurst. The fire was knocked down in 20 minutes utilizing only Nutley units on scene.

Seaville MVA On January 28, 2018, Seaville crews responded to a two-car MVA on Route 9 at entrance to the Cedar Square Shopping Center. Captain Steve Schaffer and his crew stabilized the vehicles and de-energized both, while Upper Township Rescue tended to the occupants. One person was transported to a nearby hospital. Responding units were Seaville Fire Rescue, Upper Township Rescue and the New Jersey State Police.

Orange House Fire On February 21, 2018, shortly after starting their daily cleanup and maintenance routine, Tour 2 was dispatched to a structure fire.

When Acting-Deputy Chief Gary Glomb arrived at the 100 block of S. Center Street, he encountered a heavy smoke condition from the top floor of an unoccupied home. Arriving engine companies immediately advanced hoses to extinguish all visible fire, while the ladder company crew performed forcible entry, search and ventilation. Additional responding personnel included, Deputy Chief Gerard Long, Deputy Chief Cosimo Politi, Captain Matthew Piserchio, Captain Elvin Padilla, Jr., and Pulse Ambulance. East Orange, Irvington and Montclair covered, while West Orange responded to the scene.

One minor firefighter injury was reported.

1 Injured at Hackensack Fire On February 2, 2018, members of the 3rd Platoon responded to South Prospect Avenue. On arrival, Engine 2 encountered heavy fire in a bedroom on the second floor showing out the windows and stretched a line. Engine 4 arrived and stretched a second line, as Ladder 1 and Rescue 1 began searches and ventilation. Engines 1 and 5 assisted with additional handlines and ventilation. The fire was knocked down in 10 minutes. Also responding were Englewood, Teaneck and Hackensack Volunteer BLS, which transported one occupant with burns to the hands to Hackensack UMC. - Fire News photo by Justin Derevyanik

9th Floor Apartment Fire On January 23, 2018, the Orange Fire Department responded to Oakwood Avenue for a structure fire. Companies confirmed fire on the ninth floor of a senior citizen high-rise and struck the second alarm shortly after arrival. The hydrant in front of the building was out of service. The windows in the fire apartment were taken out for ventilation and once the smoke cleared companies checked for extension but were able to keep the fire contained to the one room. Mutual aid came from West Orange, South Orange and Irvington.

Firehouse Kitchen

Cooking for Life As I was going through my mail, I came upon a letter from a teacher in Rocky Point, NY. It stated how her class was a big fan of the show, Firehouse Kitchen. Upon reading this I thought, “What would be better than for Firefighter Ray to give her class a visit.” I contacted the teacher and told her my idea. She was excited and we set the date!

So began my trip to the northeast shore of Long Island. As one drives out this way, you cannot miss the feeling that you are in another place.

The landscape goes from the suburbs to a more rural landscaping and it is breath taking. For a moment, I forgot I was only 30 minutes from home! The class, I was visiting, was a life skills class. The main objective in the class is to get them ready for the real world. What is more necessary in the real world than to know how to cook?

Therefore, I showed them how to cook a meal.

When I got there, they made me feel like a movie star. They were beside themselves with the presence of Firefighter Ray —woo hoo! We went through a little Q-and-A and then got right to work. I thought chicken skewers would be perfect.

I did most of the cutting and they did most of the skewering. When they skewers were cooking in the oven, they thought it would be fun to watch an episode of Firehouse Kitchen. They chose to watch the one when I cooked with my wife, Lori. They thought it was funny how she was “busting my chops.” Lovely! When the episode was over and the berating stopped, we had a delicious meal with accompanied with many smiles. This life skills class is an important class and brings so much joy to the students involved. A very special thanks to Kyle, Kathleen, Valerie, Joey and Nikki. They are going to do great in life.

Ray’s Chicken Skewers 3 pounds of chicken Onions Green peppers Grape tomatoes

Skewer sticks Teriyaki sauce Greek yogurt

Directions Cube up the chicken and soak in teriyaki sauce.

Cube up onions and green peppers, onions and tomatoes. Skewer a piece of chicken, a green pepper, an onion and a tomato and continue in that order until skewers are full. Put in oven at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Let slightly cool before eating. Dip in yogurt sauce and enjoy!

Hackettstown Fire Jumps

Recently, the Hackettstown Fire Department was dispatched to Grand Avenue for a report of a house fire. The police reported a second house on fire. As units arrived, fire was coming from the D side of the multi-story house and electrical lines were sparking and the exposure was starting to catch. Chief 78-60 called for a second alarm as several handlines were stretched and the power company was requested. After knocking down fire on all floors and starting some overhaul, firefighters were held at bay until the power could be cut. The second house sustained exterior damage, but there were no injuries at the scene. Mutual aid came from Independence, TriCounty, Washington Borough, Budd Lake and Netcong.

Icy Linwood Battle The City of Linwood Fire Department responded on January 14, 2018, for a report of a fire alarm.

While responding, dispatch advised of fire showing and a possible entrapment. Chief Dave Buzby arrived and established command for a fire in a 2-1/2 story, balloon-style construction, wood frame duplex with both inhabitants not home.

Command requested a FAST from City of Northfield along with a ladder and engine from the City of Somers Point. Linwood firefighters stretched several lines to where fire was showing from the first and second floor. Firefighters tried to enter the structure from the B side entrance but found the stairwell was burnt out.

Firefighters then put a ladder to the second floor but due to the amount of fire that was in the attic, command had firefighters go to a defensive mode. Linwood Public Works responded with salt as conditions iced up in the bitter ninedegree temps. Also responding were City of Linwood Police, Somers Point Ladies Auxiliary, South Jersey Gas Company, Atlantic City Electric Company, New Jersey American Water Company, Red Cross, Animal Control of South Jersey, Atlantic County Fire Investigators, New Jersey Division of Fire Safety, Atlantic County Road Department.

Late Night Fight in Paterson Late on January 7, 2018, Paterson Fire Alarm transmitted a box for a possible fire on Fulton Street. On arrival, a second alarm was requested due to heavy fire on the first floor of a 2-1/2 story dwelling. Within 20 minutes, Deputy 1 pulled all members out of the building due to heavy fire showing from both the first and second floors extending into the attic. With numerous handlines and a ladder pipe in operation heavy fire broke through the roof.

Crews were rotated through rehab and the fire took three hours to place under control.

Collingswood House Fire

On January 18, 2018, a dwelling fire was reported on the 600 block of Eldridge Avenue. Task Force 16 was dispatched on the box.

Units arrived to a single-family dwelling with heavy fire conditions from Division C. An all-hands box was struck. Squad 16 arrived, secured a water supply and went into operation with a handline.

Crews reported fire on the first floor and it was knocked down as crews opened up to check for extension.

Burglar & Fire Alarms in Ridgefield Park On February 3, 2017, Ridgefield Park Fire Department and Police responded to commercial alarms on Industrial Avenue. On arrival, a smoke condition was located in the large building and a working fire was found in the loading dock area. Command requested a second alarm, as some responding companies were initially delayed by a train blocking the railroad crossing that would normally be used for access. Mutual aid came from Bogota, Teaneck, Hackensack and Little Ferry. The main body of fire was knocked down in approximately 15 minutes, however extensive overhaul was needed to reach pockets of deep seated fire. Irvington Structure Fire Extends

Recently, the Irvington Fire Department responded to a structure fire on South 14th Street. Companies encountered a heavy column of smoke while responding and requested a FAST from Maplewood. Crews arrived to a fully involved 2-1/2 story home threatening both the Bravo and Delta exposures. A second alarm was quickly struck bringing a Newark Task Force to the scene.

Command directed Engine 32 to the Charlie side to protect the exposures which were multi-car garages. A defensive attack started as the structure was beyond saving, while crews attempted to prevent further exposure damage. Heavy fire soon worked its way through the Bravo, Bravo 2, And Delta exposures. The frigid temperatures made for an even tougher fight. Crews were able to get the main body of fire in the exposures knocked down and remained on scene for the remainder of the day to hit hot spots.

Crews Pulled in Cherry Hill

On February 13, 2018, a dwelling fire was reported on the 1100 block of Liberty Bell Drive in Cherry Hill. Companies arrived to heavy smoke and fire showing from the second floor of a two-story, single-family, wood frame dwelling. A water supply was secured and two handlines were placed in operation. Command struck an all hands. The third-due engine company was ordered to secure a secondary water supply to place the Blitz fire in operation in the rear. Crews were pulled from the dwelling as heavy fire conditions were in the attic and through the roof.

Condo Fire Snuffed

1 FF Injured, 2 Fatalities in Allamuchy Blaze

The volunteer fire companies of Cologne and Laureldale responded to Alamo Court in the Timber Glen Development for a report of a structure fire on January 3, 2018. Cologne Chief Shawn Vallauri established command and reported nothing showing from the A side. Command then went to the rear of the building and reported heavy smoke showing from a rear apartment and requested one engine from the Atlantic City Airport Fire Department. Command had the first-in engine stretch a line to the rear and had the Airport engine grab a hydrant only to discover it was frozen. Regardless, firefighters made a quick knock down and discovered a fire in a clothes dryer that extended into the structure.

Firefighters from Allamuchy Fire responded to a call for smoke coming from a house on Mallard Drive in the Panther Valley section of the township. New Jersey State Police arrived first and advised there was fire coming from the house with cars in the driveway. Chief 9160 arrived and requested a second alarm as crews stretched lines to the house and started to attack the fire. One person was pulled from the house but was pronounced. Crews then continued fighting fire and brought the fire under control 90 minutes later. Sadly, a second person was found in a back bedroom. One firefighter was injured and removed to an area hospital with a leg injury and later released.

Mutual aid came from Budd Lake, Netcong, Hackettstown, Independence, Hope and Green Township.

Hackensack 2-Alarm Electrical Fire On February 12, 2018, Hackensack 4th Platoon responded to a 911 call of smoke in the area of Lodi and McKinley Streets.

Engines 1, 2, 4 and 5; Ladder 1; Rescue 1; and Deputy Chief Kalman reported fire coming from the roof area and transmitted a second alarm bringing a Teaneck FAST and Englewood truck to the scene. Engine 1 stretched a two-inch handline into the front door, Engine 5 stretched a backup line, Engines 2 and 4 established water supplies and Engine 4 placed its deck gun in service.

Ladder 1 and Rescue 1 forced entry through the roll-up doors and conducted primary searches. Command requested Engine 3, Ladder 2, South Hackensack Engine 1, and the Bergenfield Air Unit to assist in extensive overhaul. The cause was found to be electrical in nature.

Hoarding Hampers McKee City Fire Fight The volunteer fire companies of Cardiff and Farmington responded to Lehigh Avenue in the McKee City section of the township early on February 11, 2018, for a report of a structure fire. Cardiff Chief Gil Zonge requested a second alarm, bringing the remaining EHT companies, RIT from the City of Northfield, and automatic cover ups. Chief Zonge reported a two-story single-family involved.

Command reported hoarding condition and cautioned all units. Numerous obstacles hampered firefighters efforts as there were vehicles and debris on the exterior of the home. The fire took several hours to bring under control, as debris from the interior was removed and piled outside, chest high.

Also responding were Bargaintown, Scullville, Farmington, West Atlantic City, EHT EMS, EHT Police, EHT Fire Police, Atlantic County EMS Rehab Task Force, Absecon (cover), Northfield (RIT), Linwood (cover), Somers Point, Township of Hamilton (cover), Cardiff Ladies Auxiliary, and Atlantic City Electric.

Nutley 2-Alarmer On February 8, 2018, Nutley Fire received multiple calls for heavy black smoke coming from a home on Passaic Avenue. Engine 1 and Ladder 1 arrived to find a large 2-1/2 story residential with heavy fire showing from the exterior and a second alarm was immediately struck as the fire was threatening the Bravo exposure. Belleville, Bloomfield and Clifton responded to the scene. Crews were able to knock down the fire from the exterior quickly, while they forced entry into the Bravo exposure to check for extension.

Mays Landing MVA The Mays Landing Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched on December 27, 2017, to Harding Highway and Babcock Road for an MVA with wires down and a rollover. Mays Landing Chief Lou DiMartine established command and reported that two subjects were out of the vehicle. Command requested Mays Landing Squad 16 to await the arrival of Atlantic City Electric Company. Once the wires were de-energized, firefighters were able to secure the vehicle and remove fluids from the roadway.

Rollover in West Orange On January 23, 2018, all West Orange units responded to Walker Road for an MVA with rollover and entrapment. Units found an SUV on its side after striking a parked vehicle. The occupant was stable but unable to self extricate.

Members of Truck 1 used struts to stabilize the vehicle in order the remove the single occupant who was then transported to a local hospital.

Secaucus MVA

The Secaucus Fire Department was dispatched to the area of the Shell gas station on Route 3 for an MVA with a rollover. Deputy 1 reported a two-car MVA with one car up an embankment.

Although the car was far off the roadway there was no rollover and no entrapment. A BLS unit from Meadowlands Hospital handled one injury.

4 Sickened in ACCC HazMat Incident

The volunteer fire companies of Mays Landing and Cologne responded to the Atlantic Cape Community College, on Black Horse Pike, on February 5, 2018, for a hazmat incident. When firefighters arrived, they were met by four people complaining to be sick. Mays Landing Chief Lou DiMartine requested a response from Atlantic County HazMat. An entry team of Mays Landing Captain Rob DeBiaso, who assumed operations, and Cologne Assistant Chief Paul Gramm, who assumed interior ops, entered the building to do an investigation. Upon arrival of county hazmat, the building was checked with meters and it was determined that an unknown substance had been released into the atmosphere of the building. The four people complaining to be sick were treated by the Township of Hamilton’s EMS Rescue 18.

2 Injured in Paterson Fire

On the evening of January 27, 2018, Paterson Fire Alarm received calls about a building fire on 17th Avenue. Battalion 1 quickly arrived and reported a working fire in a vacant three-story wood frame. Heavy fire was showing from the Bravo and Charlie sides of the building on the second floor extending to the third and heavy black smoke was pushing from the front second floor windows and roof. Multiple handlines were stretched into the building for a very aggressive offensive attack as the roof was opened for ventilation. An additional handline protected the Delta exposure. Two squatters in the building were transported to the hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries and no firefighters were injured.

Hoarding Conditions at Cardiff Fire The volunteer fire companies of Cardiff and Farmington responded to Lehigh Avenue for a report of a structure fire.

Cardiff Chief Gil Zonge established command for a fire in a two-story, wood frame, single-family home fully involved and requested RIT from the City of Northfield and then a second alarm bringing all of the remaining EHT companies to the scene. Bargaintown also responded. Firefighters faced hoarding condition, which made firefighting efforts difficult. The fire took several hours to extinguish. Also responding were the Atlantic County EMS Rehab Task Force, EHT Ambulance, EHT Police, and fire units from Somers Point, Linwood (cover) and Absecon (cover).

South Amboy 2-Alarmer On February 25, 2018, firefighters were dispatched for multiple reports of a house fire. Upon arrival, crews were met with heavy smoke and fire showing from a 2-1/2 story dwelling on the second floor. A second alarm was called as the fire quickly ramped up and got into the attic. Crews made a strong interior push as roof crews cut and vented. The heavy fire was knocked down within 30 minutes. Ten residents managed to get out of the home but five were treated and transported for various minor injuries.

Arson in Newark Vacant Warehouse Fire On January 13, 2018, the Newark Fire Department responded to Garden Street and New Jersey Railroad Avenue for a building fire.

On arrival, E-14 reported a working fire on the second floor of a large three-story abandoned warehouse. A second alarm was requested due to heavy fire conditions. Deputy 1 advised of defensive operations only. Five minutes into the job, Deputy 1 reported the second floor fully involved extending to the third with live wires down and set up a collapse zone. Additional engines were requested above the second alarm as fire went through the roof.

Special calls were made for several additional units as five ladder pipes, several deck guns, numerous ground monitors and handlines were put into operation. The main body of fire was knocked down after approximately two hours, however companies remained on the scene through the evening hitting hot spots, one of which flared up the following morning. Emergency demolition was requested and a suspect was arrested for starting the fire.

Paterson Fire Christens New Ladder On January 17, 2018, the Paterson Fire Department responded to a fire in a 2-1/2 story residential structure on East 25th Street. Companies arrived to heavy smoke and fire showing and attempted an interior attack while a second alarm was struck. Crews battled snow and icing conditions. Heavy fire started to self-vent from the attic as command pulled all companies out.

Multiple handlines were stretched along with an exposure protection line and two ladder pipes. Command started releasing companies approximately an hour and a half after arrival. This was the very first fire for brand new Ladder 1.

Kearney Porch Fire On February 3, 2018, the Kearney Fire Department responded to Belgrove Drive for a fire. Car 2 arrived and advised there was visible fire showing on the exterior attached porch on division 2 and requested a second alarm, bringing a Harrison truck and a Jersey City Task Force to the scene. The fire was quickly knocked down by Squad 2 while the crew of Ladder Tower 2 opened up the walls to check for extension.

Flanders and Budd Lake Handle 2-for-1 MVAs Recently, firefighters from Flanders and Budd Lake were dispatched to a car on fire in the middle of Route 206 at Main Street. Cars 50 and 51 arrived to a car sitting in the middle of the highway with the engine and passenger compartments involved.

Rescue 97 started the attack as Engine 59 arrived and assisted. There were no injuries and the fire was knocked down within 15 minutes. As overhaul and removal were ongoing, a two-car MVA occurred a half mile up the highway. Engine 59 responded to that scene and secured the cars.

Quick Thinking Prevents Injuries as Tree Damages Orange Engine Co. 3 Orange Fire units were dispatched to the 400 Block of Berkeley Avenue on a reported fire. Unable to locate the fire, Acting Deputy Chief Matthew Piserchio instructed Engine Company 3 to check Berkeley Road located in the same area. While Engine 3 turned into a cul-de-sac, Captain Joseph Gonzalez noticed a tree starting to fall. Captain Gonzalez immediately instructed the chauffeur to accelerate. His quick thinking prevented the cab from absorbing the full impact that could have caused serious injuries or death to the crew. Nonetheless, the apparatus sustained major damage from the tree that was later determined to be eight feet in diameter at the base.

Ship Bottom Battles, Nor’easter, Flooding, More at House Fire

Firefighters responded to the 900 block of Shore Avenue in the Ship Bottom section of Long Beach Island on March 7, 2018, for a house fire that may have been caused by a lightning strike. Heavy flooding on the island made it difficult to get apparatus and manpower out of the firehouses as well as making access to the home problematic. No one was injured as a result of the fire, said Fire Chief Rick Traut of the Ship Bottom Volunteer Fire Company. Multiple mutual aid units also responded during the rare “thundersnow” event.

Firefighters responded to an early morning house fire in Ewing Township. The first-due West Trenton Volunteer Station 33 attacked the front door, and were backed up by Ewing Stations 31 and 30, and Lawrence Station 22. The cause was said to be an overloaded plug strip.

With help from two organization past presidents and New Jersey Office of Emergency Medical Services Director Scot Phelps, the EMS Council of New Jersey (EMSCNJ) officers recited their oaths of office for 2018 on January 21, 2018, at the Middlesex County Fire Academy.

Preparing for the 20th Annual NJ Emergency Prep Conference Who better to prepare a conference about Emergency Preparedness than Emergency Planners? As you can imagine, the task is overwhelming at times and requires an immense amount of organization, communication and endurance. The conference is produced by the New Jersey Emergency Preparedness Association — a 501 C3 not-for-profit, allvolunteer organization that provides education and training for all persons and agencies involved in the emergency management field.

Here are some fun facts about this year's planning: E-MAILS As you can imagine with an all-volunteer staff with ‘day’ jobs (many volunteers work overnight), the bulk of the planning and communication is done through e-mail (So. Many. E-mails.) and evening phone calls. Speaking of phone calls …

PHONE CALLS & MEETINGS The board meets in person quarterly, and the committees meet monthly until right before the conference. January to April, bi-weekly calls keep everyone on track. Of course, there are numerous calls, emails and texts person-to-person on a weekly basis to make changes.

PLANNING The committees begin planning for the next year during the conference itself. Some plans are made about a year-and-a-half before conference since great ideas don’t always match timing or budgets in the current year. Your feedback is critical, so be sure to stop one of the team members to provide your input, and absolutely be sure to answer our post-event survey.

While Training takes place Monday through Friday and Breakout Sessions Tuesday through Friday, the exhibit floor is being set to open Wednesday evening and stay open on Thursday. Another team is working with Tropicana to finalize details on the various networking events Young Professionals Event, Awards Programs, etc…, and each team member is handling the wants and needs of 1400-plus attendees. As the week wraps up, all are ready to take a short break, but not for long. The President and Vice-President call the next first planning meeting within a month.

RESILIENCE FOR DUTY: MIND AND BODY

With the physical and emotional demands on responders today, there is a need to redefine what it means for firefighters to be fit for duty. Individual resilience for duty refers to the one’s ability to prepare for and recover to return to normalcy. Fit for duty no longer refers to only to physical fitness and agility. It also refers to being resilient to the stress and emotional impacts of the job.

Resilience begins with understanding the stress you face when responding to the chaos of crisis. Responding to the needs of a community during its most vulnerable times can take its toll on how emergency responders process the world around them. Unmanaged, constant exposure to such adversity can influence relationships, cause health issues and even affect safety at work. Being a “Resilient Responder” starts with committing to take care of yourself, sleeping well, eating well and living well.

According to the Department of Health & Human Services, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response, “Individual resilience involves behaviors, thoughts, and actions that promote personal wellbeing and mental health. It refers to a person’s ability to withstand, adapt to, and recover from adversity”.

Begin with a Good Night’s Sleep Resilience begins with reporting for duty mentally and physically ready to respond. Be sure that you are well rested and ready to perform at your best. Sleep is a critical component to one’s physical health and mental well-being and is essential to resilience. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, sleep helps your brain function and process the stress of the world around us. Sleep also prepares your brain for your duty day. It aids in managing your attention span and decision-making and creative skills.

Sleep deficiency may impact resilience and can impact emotions, behavior and one’s ability to cope with changes. This can lead to elevated levels of stress and has been linked to depression, risky behaviors and even suicide. Avoid surprises by being current on issues and events that may impact emergency operations.

NHLBI also points to the value of sleep in managing physical well-being and repairing the impact of stresses on our bodies. When you sleep, the body heals and regenerates. For example, when you sleep, your body works to repair the impact of a variety of stresses on your heart and blood vessels. Individuals who have continued lack of sleep may suffer from other complications from sleep deficiency such as an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and even stroke.

Eat well and Take Your Time We all have heard that you ‘are what you eat.’ Eating well includes learning about food and nutrition so that you have a healthy well balanced diet. Also, be sure to avoid excessive amounts of caffeine and alcohol. According to the American Heart Association, excessive amounts of alcohol or caffeine can increase blood pressure. Avoid caffeine during rehab. Instead, drink water to stay hydrated. Caffeine can interfere with sleep cycles and can exaggerate the impacts of stress on the body and mind.

According to an article in the Harvard Mental Health Letter, while stress initially may reduce appetite, stress eating is real. Stress eating can lead to the overeating of comfort foods that can be high in fats and sugars. This in turn can lead to weight gain and obesity.

Prolonged exposure to high stress triggers the body’s survival mechanisms, including an increase in appetite. If your body perceives that the stress is ever-present, it may cause a continuation of appetite.

The article also advises that stress can also change the type of food we desire. Several studies have shown that, “Physical or emotional distress increases the intake of food high in fat, sugar, or both.”

Foods that are heavy in fat and sugar may interfere with the area of the brain that identifies stress. These comfort foods may reduce stress but create cravings for what may be unhealthy choices.

To counteract the cravings for unhealthy food choices, focus food

choices on fruits and vegetables. Limit the intake of foods that are high in fat, salt and sugar. Drink water and exercise to lower levels of the stress hormone.

Engage Your Peers, Partners and Friends Several articles and studies show that having healthy relationships is a critical component of a personal resiliency strategy. Being mentally prepared for duty includes the ability to process and discuss our experiences with those we trust and with those we have built relationships. Relationships help the responders maintain a positive outlook and a calm demeanor.

The American Psychological Association (APA) has released an online brochure that can assist individuals in building their resiliency. Two factors that they associate with resiliency are communication skills and the capacity to manage strong feelings and impulses. While an individual can build these capabilities alone, having relationships allows peers, partners and friends to be part of a support network.

The APA provides 10 ways to build resilience. The first is to build strong connections with family, peers and friends. Having the support and assistance of those around you who care is essential to resilience and recovery from stress. Also, being there for others in need can have a benefit to building personal resilience.

Peers, partners and friends also help to recognize changes in personality and behavior that you may not recognize and help you recognize and cope.

No one is immune to the physical and emotional impacts of stress. Just as physical conditioning takes time, building a resilient lifestyle takes time. However, it is an essential component of assuring fitness for duty.

All Hands Fire in Medford On February 10, 2018, Taskforce 2520 was dispatched for a reported house fire in Medford.

Burlington County Central Communications reported a single caller reported her house on fire, everyone was out and disconnected the line. Chief Farnsworth arrived and reported a two-story, single-family dwelling with fire showing from the C side on division 1. The fire was placed under control quickly. One firefighter was transported for nonlife-threatening injuries.

Moresco Retires, 15 Probies Start February 23, 2018, marked a day at the Orange Fire Department where one starts a new chapter in life and 15 others a new career.

Deputy Chief Joseph Moresco grew up in Orange and later signed up to serve and protect in his hometown. He will now, after 25 years of dedicated service, join those who proudly wore the uniform and passed through the doors before him.

“The department, along with the citizens, are grateful to have had him for all those years,” said Orange Fire Director Kenneth M. Douglas.

As they say in the fire service, “it’s a young person’s job.” With that in mind, Mayor Dwayne Warren, Esq., Fire Director Douglas and the Fire Administration presented 15 probationary firefighters with their official firefighter shield, marking a transition into full-fledge firefighters.

We wish Deputy Chief Joseph Moresco a safe and healthy retirement and our new Firefighters a great career.

On February 23, 2018, the City of Long Branch held a promotion ceremony at city hall for Long Branch Fire Captain Carl E. Griffin, Sr., and Lieutenant Kevin Slattery. Capt Griffin has been with the LBFD since July of 2008 and Slattery was hired in 2007.

Marlboro Active Service Awards

At its annual Awards Dinner, held March 3, 2018, the Marlboro Volunteer Fire Company presented ex-Chief, Life Member, and past-Fire Commissioner John Borden with an Award for his 45 years of active service. Presenting the award was Chief Joseph Chaplinski. Also receiving awards were Evan Levine and Daniel Natale for five-years of service, and ex-Chief, Life Member, and Fire Commissioner Paul Elkin for 40 years of active service.
