Refresh Your Driving Skills In 1959, I sat in the driver’s seat of a brandnew Mack C model pumper. I was no different than the kids of today, who visit our firehouses and sit in the rigs, dreaming of driving to a fire.

When I joined the volunteer fire service in 1992, who would have ever thought that I would become qualified to drive my departments Mack CF and go on to become part of a team of dedicated drivers and pump operators that teach others to do the same?

Unlike the days of the past, today’s chauffers and pump operators are trained to teach others. For now, I will put aside pump operations and ladder operations and talk about driver training. Recently, the insurance companies that represent the fire services have set up a program that trains the trainer how to make sure your department’s drivers can safely operate their vehicles. The driver “train the trainer” course is a 16-hour course that covers every aspect of driving. Once your department’s driving team takes the course, they are then qualified to set up a program that all drivers can follow to learn to drive and to refresh as recom-

mended by your agency. Now that the weather has started to warm up, the drivers in many departments re-qualify by taking a road test along with a cone course that challenges the driver’s judgement and skills. Drivers also take an in-class course that reviews emergency vehicle driving laws, vehicle dynamics, braking systems and a host of other topics that drivers must understanding for safe vehicle operation.

The in-class portion of the training covers the proper use of emergency lighting and the use of sirens. Many organizations utilize Automated Traffic Control Systems. The classroom is the perfect place to review the system’s operating features and limitations. For the members who do not drive in your department, the course covers the proper use of hand signals and radio procedures when directing the drivers as they back up.

I could go on about the course, but I am sure you have your own driver refresher course. The purpose of my editorial is to remind you that springtime is the perfect time to refresh yourselves on the principles of safe driving and to

re-familiarize yourself with the driving skills that you may take for granted. It is the officer’s job to remind drivers to slow down when your adrenalin kicks in. When backing up, follow your department’s protocol to insure a safe backup operation. Wear your seatbelt and make sure the members riding with you are also wearing their seatbelts.

Springtime is the perfect time to hone your driving skills, so they are ready to react safely when something goes awry. Encourage your driving instructors to take an Emergency Vehicle Driver Training course.

Burn Foundation Fundraiser Shoot

On March 6, 2019, members of the Delran Fire Department joined with Burn Foundation Artist Joseph M. Getsinger for a photo shoot for the 2019 Firemen’s Convention fundraiser for the Burn Foundation.

This photo shoot will aid the artist in creating the image for this year’s fundraiser in Wildwood in September. This year the artist will re-create the first painting he did in 1980 for the Burn Foundation but re-cre-

100s Displaced by Ft. Lee Apt. House Blaze

A little after 1600 on February 14, 2019, the Fort Lee Fire Department was dispatched to Edwin Avenue.

Companies arrived to find heavy smoke showing from the front of the five-story structure with fire in the basement. An aggressive interior attack commenced as members conducted searches, ventilated and made several rescues of occupants off fire escapes and out windows. Fairly quickly, crews reported a collapse in a first-floor apartment above the fire but at this point they were also reporting water on the fire. Conditions started to deteriorate and heavy smoke started pushing from the upper floors and from the roof, and fire was visible in the first- and second-floor apartments above the original fire area. Command requested an additional engine and ladder, as well as the Mask Service Unit from Hackensack. As conditions further deteriorated and crews reported fire on additional floors, command struck second and third alarms. Finally, with no headway being made, the building was evacuated. Heavy fire was venting out of numerous apartments in the rear of the building and breaking through the roof. Eventually the fire engulfed the entire structure with the roof and several floors collapsing. Six ladder pipes, a deck gun and numerous ground monitors and handlines were put to work as large embers rained down. Although appearing to be one very large building, the south side was actually separated by a fire wall. This, as well as aggressive firefighting, kept the fire from extending into the south building. Several hundred people were left homeless but thankfully all occupants were accounted for and only three firefighters suffered minor injuries. The fire was placed under control at 2100, although companies remained on the scene through the night and into the next day hitting hot spots. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

All-Hands Dwelling Fire in Medford Township At 0245 on March 5, 2019, Taskforce 2514 was alerted to a reported truck on fire in an attached garage. Deputy Chief Webb arrived to find a two-story, single-family dwelling with fire showing from the attached garage and extension into the dwelling. While Quint 2514 stretched, Engine Company 2511 laid out from the hydrant and used its deck gun to darken the fire. No injuries were reported.

Man Burned at Clifton Kitchen Fire

Full Collapse at Northfield House Fire

On February 17, 2019, the Clifton Police and Fire Departments were notified of a fire at the corner of Clifton Avenue and 4th Street with a burn victim. The first arriving police units found a severely burned worker from the deli laying on the front lawn of the residential-over-commercial structure. Engine 1 arrived shortly after and reported nothing showing on approach. Ladder 3 and Engine 1 investigated the interior and found a kitchen fire which had been extinguished prior to arrival. EMS-2 transported the victim to St. Joseph's in Paterson.

The City of Northfield Fire Department responded to East Oakcrest Avenue at 0327 on February 19, 2019, for a dwelling fire.

Firefighters arrived to find a two-story home well involved.

Command immediately requested additional engines from Pleasantville, Linwood and Somers Point. The dwelling eventually collapsed with Northfield firefighters remaining on location well into the daylight hours. The cause of the fire was under investigation. Also responding were Cardiff, Scullville, Tri Care EMS and the Northfield Police.

West Atlantic City Condo Fire

Fair Lawn Fire Rekindles

The West Atlantic City Volunteer Fire Company responded to Mallard Lane in the Bayport Condos for a report of a structure fire on February 11, 2019. Chief Wallace Bakely discovered a fire on the second floor of a multi-family townhouse. He requested mutual aid from the City of Pleasantville and Farmington, followed quickly by a request for a second alarm after seeing fire pushing out of the second-floor rear window. The second alarm brought Cardiff, Bargaintown and Scullville to the scene. Also assisting were Bayview (covered Farmington), City of Northfield (RIT), EHT Ambulance, EHT Police, South Jersey Gas Company and Atlantic City Electric.

On December 7, 2018, the Fair Lawn Fire Department was dispatched for a house fire on Bellair Avenue. The chief reported heavy smoke and fire showing from the first floor of a 2-1/2 story dwelling and requested a second alarm. Several handlines were stretched and the main body of fire was knocked down in 20 minutes with companies overhauling. While a restoration crew was on the scene boarding up the home they noticed some smoke in the structure and the firefighters responded for a rekindle, which was quickly knocked down. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

1 Burned in Evesham Fire

Evesham Fire Rescue was dispatched to a house fire behind the CVS in the area of South Maple Avenue on March 17, 2019. Virtua Medic 35 arrived and reported fire showing from division 2 of a two-story dwelling. Chief Bittenbender held with EFR units, and units from Medford and Mount Laurel. One victim was transported to the burn center.

Jersey City 3-Alarmer City Just before 2030 on March 18, 2019, Jersey City firefighters were dispatched to Jordan Street for a structure fire. Engine 9 arrived to smoke showing from the second floor. Firefighters knocked down fire with an interior attack, but the already advanced fire was traveling fast and a second alarm was struck. Crews were forced off the third floor and then out of the building as the flames intensified and big lines were stretched and put into operation. Firefighters were successful in keeping the flames from destroying an attached dwelling but five residents of the adjoining dwelling needed to be relocated. A third alarm was stuck for manpower.

The fire in the vacant home was deemed suspicious and police believe squatters had been living in the structure.

Irvington 2-Alarmer

On February 19, 2019, the Irvington Fire Department responded to Chancellor Avenue for a reported fire on the second floor. Deputy 41 arrived to heavy smoke showing from a large multi-family residence. Maplewood Engine 32 and Orange Engine 3 responded as Irvington crews attempted an interior attack, but the fire had worked its way into the cockloft and consumed the entire roof area.

A second alarm was struck and an emergency evacuation was

ordered as heavy fire began to self-vent from the roof and cockloft area. Heavy smoke banked down on the nearby Garden State Parkway as crews set up for master stream operations. East Orange Ladder 2 and West Orange Engine 2 responded on the second alarm. Companies knocked down all heavy fire and transitioned to an offensive attack and knocked down hot spots.

Still Pumping Flawlessly On February 4, 2019, Montclair Engines 1 and 2, and Truck 2 responded to Park Street and Alexander Avenue for a car fire. On arrival of Engine 2, an engine compartment fire was found and quickly knocked down with a bumper line. The first-due engine was 31-years old and still pumped flawlessly!

Mays Landing MVA The volunteer fire companies of Mays Landing, Laureldale and Cologne responded to Harding Highway and Cologne Avenue on January 6, 2019, for a report of an MVA with entrapment. Mays Landing Chief Lou DiMartine reported the crash was west of Cologne Avenue at Benchmark Lane. Command also reported the driver had self-extricated. Firefighters cut the battery cables and assisted in clearing the highway. The cause of the crash was under investigation by the Township of Hamilton Police. Also responding were the Township of Hamilton EMS and Atlanticare Paramedics.

Foot Trapped in Wayne Car Wash On February 8, 2019, Wayne Fire Companies 1 and 2 along with the First Aid and Rescue Squad responded to the Wayne Lincoln Car Wash on Mountainview Boulevard for reports of a person with a foot trapped within the car wash. A Company 1 chief found a worker whose foot became caught in the track that guides the vehicles through the wash.

The worker’s foot was trapped past his ankle in 1/4-inch thick plates that were embedded into the ground. Command requested Lincoln Park Fire Department’s Rescue, Paterson Fire’s USAR Rescue, Wayne Company 5 Rescue, Wayne FAS Rescue, and Wayne’s TRT. After nearly 40 minutes the worker’s foot was freed and he was transported by a Wayne Ambulance to St. Joseph’s in Paterson.

With the start of its 90th anniversary of volunteer EMS in the Garden State, the EMS Council of New Jersey (EMSCNJ) installed its leadership for 2019 during a ceremony Saturday at the Jumping Brook Country Club.

Old Pierce Pumper Still Serving This 1990 Pierce Pumper originally served Woodcliff Lake in Bergen County as Engine 71.

It featured a 1750-gpm pump and a 750-gallon tank. It was allowed to be used by neighboring departments as a loaner pumper but was eventually acquired by the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute for their Fire Training Division.

3-Alarm House Fire in Kenilworth

On the night of March 22, 2019, Kenilworth firefighters were dispatched for a house on fire on Kenilworth Boulevard. First arriving units found heavy smoke and fire showing from the 3 side of the 1-1/2 story frame house and a second alarm was transmitted. Lines were quickly stretched and crews went to work trying to knock down heavy fire.

The fire advanced into the attic and, fueled by high winds, continued to extend through the dwelling.

Firefighters had to pull ceilings to gain access to the fire in the attic where the fire was rolling around. Once done, the fire was quickly knocked down.

By Samantha Cooney This month’s article was written by my daughter, Samantha Cooney. It is not about cooking or the show, but about me. I feel her essay helps to give some insight into how firemen think and feel. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Growing up, my dad was famous, to me, for saying two quotes: “You can’t worry about what you can’t control,” and “Firefighters always find a way.” Being the eighth of nine children, my dad constantly felt he had to fight to be noticed. He did not have the patience and concentration required of sports and music. If he grew up in my generation, he would have been classified as ADHD. It was the love and understanding from his mother that helped keep him connected with his family. My dad always said she was the one person who truly understood him. I say this in the past tense because, unfortunately, she passed away when he was 24 and wasn’t able to help him through 9/11 and a career-ending injury from the FDNY. My grandmother, Barbara Ann Cooney, lived her life for her children.

At 52-years old, she was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer and was given six months to live, but her will to be there for her children gave her strength to live three more years. While dealing with this, my dad needed financial help to open a martial arts school. His mother, seeing the passion in his eyes for the martial arts, knew he would be successful and funded the venture.

Two years after opening his school, the second dream of my dad’s came true. He became a New York City Firefighter. His grandfather, father, and oldest brother all shared the same honor. This new connection with his family helped to fill the void of the loss of his mother.

My father always said that being part of the FDNY was like having a

second family.

Firefighters live, eat, save lives together and look out for each other just as a brother and sister would. This is why the events of 9/11 tore my father’s heart out, as it did every other firefighters’. From working at Ground Zero, to the hundreds of funerals for his fallen brothers, it became part of his daily routine. Firefighters ask themselves, “Why not me? Why did I get to live?” Just like my dad’s mother, he knew that those fallen firefighters would want him to push on and keep doing his job. On November 9, 2003, my dad suffered a fall off a ladder while battling an apartment fire. This was the beginning of the end of his FDNYcareer. He suffered extensive hip and back injuries and was put into early retirement.

These injuries also ended his career in kickboxing. Two of his passions were taken away in a matter of seconds.

No one knew then that these tragedies would shape who I would be.

With each tragedy, my dad learned how to not let something hold you back. He has since begun his own production company and has a little show called Firehouse Kitchen on national television. He continues to show me that when something knocks you down, you stare it straight in the eyes and push through.

Our life is only what we make of it.

Scouts Donate to New Milford

Recently, the New Milford Fire Department Engine Company 1 received a generous donation from the local Boy Scouts of New Milford. The Boy Scouts raised funds to purchase various DeWalt tools and other equipment for the company and the scouts also made a home-cooked meal for the firefighters and their families.

Marcal: Take 2 On January 9, 2019, the Elmwood Park Fire Department responded to Market Street at Marcal Paper for a fire. Crews searched the complex for the fire with nothing showing on arrival. After a few minutes a company representative guided the companies to the fire building where they confirmed they had a fire on the roof and a second alarm was struck. Mutual aid came from Clifton, Garfield, Fair Lawn and Saddle Brook. Truck 4 laddered the building and crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire was determined to be a forklift that had run over an extension cord igniting the fire. This was the first fire for Fair Lawn’s new Spartan Engine 3.

Hackensack Commercial Fire The Hackensack Fire Department was dispatched to Kansas Street on December 8, 2018, at around 0240 for a building fire. Acting Deputy Chief Gargagliano arrived to heavy fire from the front of the single-story ordinary building, which was the offices and warehouse of a construction company. A second alarm was requested bringing mutual aid from Teaneck and Englewood, an additional engine and truck from Hackensack, as well as mutual aid for cover. As the truck went to the roof for ventilation, two 2-1/2 inch handlines were stretched through the front door quickly knocking down the main body of fire.

Trailer Fire in Scullville The volunteer fire companies of Scullville and Bargaintown responded to Ocean Heights Avenue on January 20, 2019, for a report of a structure fire. EHT Police reported flames showing, which prompted a response of an RIT from the City of Somers Point. Scullville Chief Steven Prisament established command for a fire in a mobile home.

Command had Scullville Ladder 1535’s crew pull two lines; one around the C side rear and another through the front door. Bargaintown Rescue 1527 assisted while Rescue 1527 gave its tank water to 1535. Bargaintown Tender 1528 and Scullville Tender 1538 augmented the water supply.

Firefighters brought the fire under control quickly, and the cause was under investigation. Also responding were EHT Ambulance and the Scullville Ladies Auxiliary.

FDIC: NORTH AMERICA’S LARGEST FIRE EVENT North America’s largest fire event, the Fire Department International Conference (FDIC), will bring over 34,000 fire industry professionals to Indianapolis, Indiana from April 8-13, 2019, for its annual event. Happening alongside FDIC this year will be the iWomen Leadership Conference taking place April 7 to 9. iWomen includes 14 timely classroom sessions spread over two days, as well as networking events geared at sharing challenges and insights in a supportive environment.

FDIC’s immersive learning experience extends to the exhibit hall floor Thursday through Saturday where attendees can see and try the latest products, equipment, gear, services and technology from over 700 exhibiting companies including a mix of well-known favorites and newcomers. The outdoor demonstration serves as an extension of the show floor, where attendees can compare and demo

products in a controlled environment. An addition to this year’s outdoor demo area will include the new water flow and extrication zones.

Also, new to FDIC 2019 is the MATCH! Program. River Vale 2-Alarmer On the evening of February 13, 2019, River Vale firefighters — with the assistance of several surrounding towns — fought a two-alarm fire on Pascack Avenue, which involved a large 2-1/2 story frame mansion which had been converted to a two-family home. On arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire in the basement extending up the exterior in the rear of the building and into the upper floors and attic. After a very aggressive interior attack, the fire was placed under control in about 90 minutes.

Interboro Mutual Aid Drill Recently, the Harrington Park Fire Department hosted the Interboro Mutual Aid Drill at the former Suez Water Corporate Offices in Harrington Park. The following agencies participated in the drill: departments from Harrington, Closter, Demarest, Norwood, Northvale, Old Tappan and Haworth. Companies performed search-andrescue drills and had the opportunity to breach walls and practice forcible entry.

Harrington Park EMS and Norwood EMS also participated by setting up triage and rehab areas.

Nothing Stops Nutley

On March 2, 2019, Nutley held its annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade along Franklin Avenue. Despite heavy snow that morning, the DPW was able to clear the streets and sidewalks enough to hold the parade for a good turnout of pipe bands and fire apparatus!
