Who is Maslow?

One thing I was sure of when I joined my volunteer fire department, was that if I was to be successful, I needed to be a good listener and work hard at learning my new trade to be respected as a good firefighter. I was a believer in Maslow’s Hierarchy. (Google Maslow’s Hierarchy on your own!)

Everyone, no matter how old you are, needs to have good self-esteem and a sense of belonging in society to feel a part of it. As an officer in the fire service, an understanding of Maslow’s theory can help you lead your company with a fair amount of success. But to fine tune this theory for the fire service, there are a few things all of you need to understand.

Are you competent at what you do? This is a tough question to answer. Knowing how to do something, like starting a saw is a good thing. But when the blade needs to be changed, can you do it quickly and efficiently? For our new pump operators; can you safely get your crew to the scene of a fire?

Will the nozzle team have their water when they need it? What do you do when you screw up? Do you accept responsibility for your actions? Mistakes happen. Don’t beat around the bush and make excuses for a mistake. When things go wrong, go back to the

firehouse and sit down with the people who have some experience and ask them what you may have done wrong. During your critique, if you get several explanations about your mistake or problem you then need to seek additional help from places like your local fire academy or the manufacturer of the product with which you had a problem.

Always remember that if people view you as not knowing about a task you are supposed to know, they will shy away from you and might even view you as being unsafe. Do you want to walk into a burning building with a partner who doesn’t know what to do should a problem arise?

The firefighting culture can be tough. We tend to avoid change. When change occurs that you do not understand, remind yourself to be flexible and whatever you do, do not create your own interpretation of something and then pass it along to others. Educate yourself about the change by asking others their opinion. But always ask the person making the change to explain why the change is needed. The person making the change should also reflect on the concerns of the members. You gain the respect and get the support of others when they see that you care about them.

If you are a senior member, you need to make sure the new members of your department learn first-hand from your knowledge and experience. Attend probie drills. Simply by standing at the drill and observing, you can make positive suggestions to the trainees.

Wearing your gear during the drill, sets the example for everyone to follow. Senior members can reinforce the reasons why we do things a certain way.

It is simple for a new member to earn the respect of the company. You gain respect by understanding Maslow’s Hierarchy and by doing your job well. Remain committed to being the best at what you do. Remain dedicated to your passion to be an extraordinary first responder.

Teaneck 2-Alarmer On April 23, 2017, the Teaneck Fire Department responded to Aspen Terrace for a reported house fire. Battalion 2 reported a two-story, frame, private dwelling fully involved with live wires down in the street. A second alarm was requested bringing the remaining engine, as well as an engine from Englewood and a ladder from Hackensack, and a recall of off-duty members and mutual aid companies for cover. E-1 arrived and immediately put an attack line into service, knocking down the bulk of the fire and allowing crews to advance into the building. With the roof opened up, additional lines were stretched to hit pockets of fire throughout the building. All searches were negative, the homeowners having evacuated prior to fire department arrival.

Jet Crashes on Approach to Teterboro

On the afternoon of May 15, 2017, the Carlstadt Fire Department responded to Kero Road for multiple reports of a plane crash.

Companies arrived to two buildings well involved and multiple car fires. Mutual aid came from across southern Bergen County and combined units did an incredible job of containing the fire.

Miraculously, no one on the ground was injured, but the two people aboard the LearJet 35, which was on approach to Teterboro Airport from Philadelphia, died. Multiple agencies from the surrounding area responded. The plane’s black box was recovered the following day.

4-Story Multi-Family Fire

In the early hours of March 2, 2017, the Passaic Fire Department responded to a reported building fire on Gregory Avenue in a large four-story, occupied multi-family. Battalion 3, Chief Chris Szczygiel, arrived to heavy fire showing from several windows on the first floor alpha side with reports of people trapped. A third alarm was requested as lines were stretched and searches conducted. Fire extended to the second floor and E3 reported a bad hydrant. Command requested mutual aid from Wallington to secure a water source from another hydrant. Conditions appeared to be deteriorating and with companies still not hitting the seat of the fire, command called for an evacuation and switched to a brief exterior attack, after which companies re-entered. Four lines were stretched and crews discovered that the fire was running the walls, up to the third and fourth floors. A fourth alarm was requested and trucks were sent to the roof to open up. The fire was eventually brought under control.

Hackensack’s tiller was on loan to Passaic and riding as Ladder 1 due to that company’s truck being out of service.

Fuel Tanker Overturn in Laureldale

On April 4, 2017, Laureldale Fire Rescue and the Cologne Fire Department responded to the Atlantic City Expressway in the area of Mile Marker 20 eastbound for an MVA. Command was established by Chief Chris Tilley of Laureldale. A loaded fuel tanker was found overturned and leaking its 8800 gallon content. The area was immediately evacuated and traffic was diverted. A recon of the tanker revealed multiple ruptures. Additional resources were requested from Atlantic City International Airport. On arrival, Engine 2411 laid a four-inch hose from their crash truck to Engine 18-33, which supplied water via drafting from a portable pond.

Additional tankers were requested for water supply. Additional resources were requested to assist while the remaining contents of the fuel tanker were transferred.

1 Injured at Mobile Home Park Fire

The volunteer fire companies of Cardiff and Bargaintown responded to English Drive in the English Creek Mobile Home Park early on March 28, 2017, for a structure fire. An EHT K-9 officer arrived first and reported a working fire which prompted EHT dispatch to request an RIT from the City of Northfield. Cardiff Assistant Chief Gil Zonge had first arriving Cardiff Engine 1512 stretch a line to the front door. Cardiff Chief Steven Sear established command and requested the gas and electric companies. Firefighters made their way into the structure and made quick work of the fire. During the attack it was discovered the homeowner was across the street, suffering burns and smoke inhalation. The homeowner was immediately attended to by Egg Harbor Township EMS who transported him to a local hospital.

Haven’t We Done This Before?

Just after midnight on April 1, 2017, the Orange Fire Department responded to Chapman Street for a heavily involved 2-1/2 story, vacant frame extending into two exposures. There had been multiple fires at this address. A second alarm was quickly struck as companies went defensive dealing with frigid temperatures and a steady rain. A third alarm was struck and the fire was brought under control.

Hurricane Season Is Coming Fast. Are You Ready?

A New Monthly Column by the NJEPA No one is ever truly ready when disaster strikes, but we’re always striving to lessen the impact to our communities. June was the start of hurricane season, so your preparedness plans should already be underway. If you were at our 19th Annual NJEPA (New Jersey Emergency Preparedness Association) Conference, you’re one step closer to preparation for this year’s coming storms. NOAA is predicting up to 17 tropical storms with up to four reaching major hurricane status. Start by checking your personal preparedness plan, then help your family members and surrounding communities. Be sure your agency is inthe-know on the latest technology and assistance available to your emergency area.

Unfortunately, we learn new lessons every year. The positive is that we can use them to prepare better. Each year, the NJEPA Conference uses the classroom as the ultimate tool: knowledge. Emergency Managers benefit from what their peers encounter, not only in New Jersey, but also around the country, so that they can ramp up planning efforts to prepare and protect their own communities. Just a few examples from this year’s conference include an examination of the near miss of Hurricane Hermine and devastation from

Hurricane Matthew in the Southern US. Joe Miketta from the National Weather Service (NWS) held a workshop to focus on forecasting the storms and the challenges with predicting storms accurately. Ray Kruzdlo from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) detailed record-setting rainfall and flooding that has forever altered North Carolina — something that touches all coastal states more and more. Chris DeMaise of New Jersey State Police (NJSP) talked about the Hurricane Matthew deployment of Helicopter Search and Rescue Technician program, its services and how to request an assist. These men and their agencies are just a few of the resources available to take emergency preparedness to the next level.

The NWS highlighted new technology that is being beta tested this year. The advanced US weather satellite, GOES-16, is now safely orbiting earth and sending us images with more clarity that we have ever seen before, and therefore, providing more accuracy in prediction. The benefits of this new imagery aid in detecting storms — as well as lightning inside of thunderstorms and even forest fires. Just as technology is ever-evolving, so are the ways with which we approach our work and New

Jersey Office of Emergency Management (NJOEM) now has two Incident Management Teams. NJSP-IMT is a LE specific team designed to enhance ongoing NJSP operations or outside agency LE operations. The NJAHIMT is a statewide, multi-agency, multijurisdictional Type 3 All-Hazards team which plays an essential role in the management and response to emergencies at all levels and of all types. These teams have already been deployed and taken part in the Papal visit, both national conventions, major sporting events and the Presidential Inauguration.

Totowa Commercial Fire On April 8, 2017, the Totowa Fire Department responded to West End Road for a structure fire.

Companies arrived to find fire venting from the roof and quickly struck a second alarm bringing Wayne and West Paterson. Engine crews were able to make entry and find a machine on fire, which was venting through a ventilation stack on the roof. Totowa Truck 1 and West Paterson Truck 2 were able to ladder the roof and check for extension. The fire was brought under control in 20 minutes.

House Fire Extends to Woodlands The volunteer fire companies of Laureldale, Cologne and Mays Landing responded to Cedar Street in the Laureldale section of the township on March 22, for a structure fire with wires down and arcing, and the A, D and C sides well involved and through the roof of the two-story, wood frame, single-family dwelling that had just been renovated. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service arrived and began extinguishing a fire in the woodlands as the fire had extended. Firefighters poured water onto the fire for several hours before bringing it under control.

Totowa Dumpster Fire

On April 18, 2017, the Totowa Fire Department was dispatched to a reported dumpster fire between two homes on Boyle Avenue.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a large dumpster filled with construction debris well involved, with extension to both homes, and live electrical wires down in the street. A second alarm was requested and command advised the second-due engine to establish a water supply and go in service with their master stream. Mutual aid was requested to the scene from Paterson, Wayne and Woodland Park. Handlines were stretched into both homes and command reported the main body of the fire was knocked down with extensive overhaul required.

Trailer Fire Extends to Garage

The volunteer fire companies from Cecil and Williamstown and the Collings Lakes Volunteer Fire Company responded to W. Collings Drive on the border of Atlantic and Gloucester Counties early on April 27, 2017, for a report of a structure fire. Firefighters arrived to find a large travel trailer mostly consumed by fire and spreading into a detached two-car garage. Crews attacked the fire in the

garage with three handlines as the fire vented out the front soffits, however firefighters quickly knocked down the fire and shortly thereafter brought it under control. Residents, neighbors, and Monroe Township Police helped remove several vehicles from the garage before the fire reached it.

Well, That Wasn’t Easy

The Farmington Volunteer Fire Company responded to the A.E. Stone Asphalt Company on Doughty Road. Farmington Assistant Chief Harry Goodman arrived and reported smoke showing from a structure housing an asphalt scrubber. Goodman requested Tower 15 from Cardiff and had first-due Farmington Engine 1543 come

into the complex and set up to supply the tower while a second-due Farmington engine took a hydrant just outside the fence of the complex. Firefighters hand-dragged 300 feet of five-inch hose through the fence to E 1543, supplying the tower, which extinguished the fire in approximately 30 minutes.

Book Review

Stories of Fire

by Paul Hashagen I recently read Paul Hashagen’s latest book, Stories of Fire. Starting off, I must say that when I started reading this book, I found I could not put it down. Almost magically, I became a part of each chapter as I remembered hearing about the famous fires that Hashagen discusses in his book. Paul not only writes about the landmark fires of the past, but he also writes about the heroes who fought the fires and what was learned after each battle.

Throughout the 30 chapters in this book, Hashagen highlights fires that occurred around the world — starting in 1608. This book takes the reader through the evolution of the fire service. It was captivating to read about ideas that firefighters came up with in the 1800s to help battle the flames that were occurring throughout a growing America. I found it fascinating that the first ladder truck stood idle for almost two years before it was put to use at a San Francisco blaze in 1871. Would you believe the

first bailout ‘system’ was orignated in 1830? Tidbits such as these are scattered throughout the book.

As the stories guide your travel through time, you soon realize that many of the fires that occurred throughout history tested the fortitude of firefighters as they “... slid poles, harnessed horses, and crank started motorized apparatus.” As cities became more populated, buildings became taller and larger, the hazards of firefighting became greater.

Stories of Fire talks about many of the problems firefighters had in the past — and are still having today — as they fight to save the residents of our cities. I am sure that as you look at the pen-and-ink drawings of the past, which are highlighted in the book, you will sit back and dream what it was like to be a firefighter in days of old.

I read the last chapter – The Call — of this book several times. As I read it, I thought of why I became a firefighter. I sat back and thought that maybe someone from the past is living inside of me as I still get excited when the tones go off and I am called to duty.

“As my mind fills with the ancient sensations, strength, weakness, fear and valor generated by primordial energy.”

If you are new to the fire service, read this book so you know what great things those who came before you have done to make your future career safer. If you are at the end of your career, read this book so you can relate to the stories in the book and share your interpretation of each chapter around the coffee table.

Well done Paul Hashagen! Thanks for continuing to remind us of our firefighting past.

Clifton MVA

A Little Old for That Trick

On March 27, 2017, Clifton Engine 6 responded to Broad Street and Haddenfield Road for an MVA with injuries.

On April 5, 2017, Cedar Grove Fire Department responded to Pompton Avenue for an MVA with entrapment. Engine 71 arrived to find a two-car MVA in which a sedan crossed the yellow line and sideswiped a dump truck. The party was extricated and transported by Verona Rescue Squad to St. Joseph's Paterson. Upon further investigation, the 70-yearold female driver was found to be driving under the influence and driving in the opposite lane of traffic. The driver of the dump truck was uninjured.

2 Fatalities in Mays Landing MVA The volunteer fire companies of Mays Landing and Mizpah, along with Township of Hamilton EMS and police were dispatched on April 28, 2017, to Bears Head Road and Pittsburgh Avenue for an MVA with entrapment. Mizpah Chief Jamie Davenport arrived and requested additional apparatus from the Laureldale and Milmay, as there was an entrapment in two vehicles. Upon the arrival of Mays Landing Engine 1812, firefighters used the hydraulic equipment to extricate the victims from both vehicles simultaneously. Both persons succumbed to their injuries, and the crash was under investigation by Township of Hamilton Police. Also responding were investigators from the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Crash Unit, and the New Jersey State Medical Examiner’s Office.

Box Truck Overturn The volunteer fire companies of Mizpah and Mays Landing were dispatched to Millville and Baker Avenues on April 12, 2017, for a report of a box truck overturned. Mizpah Chief Jamie Davenport arrived to find a box truck, transporting household goods, on its side. The truck left the roadway, struck a tree, went back out onto the roadway, blowing out its roof and spilling its contents. Firefighters and police had to remove the remainder of its contents before the truck could be righted. A large fuel spill required the response of the Atlantic County Hazmat Team. Once the truck was righted, the roadway was cleared and command was terminated.

Clifton Responds to MVA

1 Hurt in Newtonville MVA

On May 13, 2017, after hours of heavy rain and multiple other MVAs and weather-related calls, Engine 6 and EMS-2 were dispatched to Route 3 eastbound by the Montclair Country Club for a car-versustree MVA. Engine 6 found one car off the roadway, which hit a tree with the passenger side, injuring a passenger. EMS-2 transported the patient to St. Joseph’s. The driver was uninjured.

The volunteer fire companies of Newtonville and Collings Lakes responded to Jackson Road between 8th and 9th Avenues on April 20, 2017, for an MVA. Newtonville Chief Gene Sykes arrived and established command for a single-vehicle accident with one female driver who was removed from her vehicle by firefighters and EMTs from Squad 12-9 of East Vineland EMS and transported.

Scullville Trailer Fire

The volunteer fire companies of Scullville and Bargaintown responded to Dale Street in the Norms-Dale Mobile Home Park early on May 1, 2017. Scullville Assistant Chief Vernon Cruz arrived and reported a working structure fire, bringing a RIT from the City of Somers Point. Scullville Chief Steven Prisament arrived and established command with A/C Cruz as operations.

Bargaintown Tender 1528 arrived with its crew pulling a precon-

nect to the A side of the structure with a second line. Scullville Engine 1532 arrived and stretched a preconnect also. The fire was quickly knocked down with extensive overhaul. Atlantic City Electric Company was requested to remove the electricity from the structure. Firefighters removed a propane tank that was attached to the structure.

RUST Confined Space Training

On May 4, 2017, members of the Cape May County Regional Urban Search Team (RUST) conducted a confined space rescue demonstration for the Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company.

The company is currently providing beach replenishment to the boroughs of Avalon and Stone Harbor, and employees are often required to enter confined spaces on the barge as part of routine maintenance. While they have confined space rescue equipment on-board, the company wanted a professional rescue response organization to explain all aspects of a rescue incident. The barge Texas, which is conducting the dredging, is the largest barge in the United States and can have between 20-30 workers onboard.

Members of the Wildwood City and Cape May City Fire Departments participating in the training included: Chief Daniel Speigel, Deputy Chief Ernie Troiano III, Captain Mathew Johnson, Firefighter Ryan Troiano and Firefighter Rich Harron, Jr. of the Wildwood City Fire Department; and Firefighter William Szemchek of the Cape May City Fire Department.

NJFFS Air Safety Meeting

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service held its annual contract air safety meeting at Coyle Field, Woodland Township, Burlington County on April 10, 2017.

The Forest Fire Service has been utilizing aircraft to observe and assist with command and control of wildland fire since the 1920s. They were one of the first fire agencies in the nation to do so.

In 1962 the state began contracting aircraft to drop water on fires.

Today they utilize a combination of state-owned helicopters and the contract air tankers to perform these missions.

Two companies provide aircraft; Downstown Aero from Gloucester

County has been contracting aircraft for firefighting for over 45 years and Fletcher Aviation from Immokalee, Florida, has been contracting to the state for the past three years.

An air tanker will be based at Miller Air Park in Berkely Township, Ocean County and at Downstown Airport in Franklin Township, Gloucester County. These planes will be on station for the next 35 days, during peak fire season and can be called back throughout the year as needed. (Above):William P. NJFSS Pack Test The New Jersey Forest Fire Service held a “Pack Test� at the Strawberryfield Air Field on April 20, 2017. Sixty-one firefighters took the test to qualify to be able to go on any out-of-state forest fire assignment. The test is to be able to walk three miles with a pack of 45 pounds and has to be completed within 45 minutes.

Just When We Thought the Day Was Over ‌

On May 13, 2017, shortly before a shift change, the Montclair Fire Department was dispatched to Montclair Avenue for reports of a house fire. Car 4 arrived and requested West Orange to the scene for RIT and to cover. Engine crews stretched lines into the home and made an interior attack, while crews from Truck 1 laddered the roof and made multiple cuts. The fire was placed under control in less than an hour. Bloomfield Engine 3 also responded to the scene.

Busy Time in Paterson Area On April 17, 2017, Paterson Fire Dispatch transmitted the box for a building on 10th Avenue. Upon arrival of Battalion 2, fire was through the roof of a large, three-story, frame, mixed-use building and a second alarm was transmitted. Command reported heavy fire on the top floor in several apartments and in the cockloft. With the B exposure threatened, E-5 used their deck gun for several minutes to knock down the heavy fire, allowing interior companies to move in and knock down remaining visible fire. The roof was opened and the cockloft was found to be clear with no further extension and the fire was placed under control. As crews were still operating, and some starting to take up, another working fire occurred on the south side of the city and was fought by mostly mutual aid companies.

Nice Stop in Union City On April 9, 2017, the North Hudson Regional Fire Rescue responded to 24th Street for a house fire. Companies arrived to a large, three-story residence with fire showing from the roof, with exposures B and D connected to the fire building. Shortly after arrival it was believed fire got into the cockloft so a second alarm was struck bringing more manpower. Companies were able to gain access to the roof of the fire building and exposures, preventing the fire from spreading to either exposure or further into the main fire building. Companies had the fire under control in under 30 minutes.

A Reason Why We Rake the Yard The volunteer fire companies of Cardiff and Bargaintown responded to a report of a structure fire on March 24, 2017, at the rear of a Sycamore Avenue single-family home. Cardiff Chief Steven Sear established command at the fire, which involved a pile of leaves that had accumulated along the back of the home and caught fire, wrinkling the siding and blowing smoke in through the dryer vent, causing a smoke condition in the home. Cardiff Engine 1512’s crew pulled a line to the rear and began extinguishing the fire, which had extended under two porches, but was quickly contained.

Firefighters opened up the exterior of the home, removed the siding and checked for extension.

The unofficial start to the summer at the Jersey Shore is the Somers Point Bay Fest which was held April 29, 2017. A large number of people and organizations support this event including the City of Somers Point Volunteer Fire Department and the South Jersey Sandpiper Bagpipe Band.

Paterson 2-Alarmer

On April 16, 2017, Paterson crews responded to a building fire on Paxton Avenue. Battalion 1 reported heavy fire in the rear of a three-story frame dwelling with fire on all floors and quickly transmitted a second alarm. As companies stretched into the home, which appeared to be lightweight wood frame construction, a report of a collapse in the rear and heavy fire in the attic prompted command to evacuate and go defensive. Exposure B, a similar structure sustained exterior fire damage, which was contained. With a tower ladder, a deck gun and numerous exterior handlines operating, the main body of fire was knocked down about an hour. All exterior lines were shut down, the building was allowed to drain and crews re-entered and completed overhaul. The cause was believed to be a barbecue in the rear yard.

House and Kitten Saved On April 19, 2017, Lyndhurst Station 32 responded to Kingsland Avenue for multiple 911 calls reporting a structure fire. Units arrived to find a fully involved detached garage, which was exposing to the home. Engine 1 stretched two lines and made quick work of the fire. While companies were conducting primary searches, a kitten was removed from the home. North Arlington Rescue 5 responded and East Rutherford covered.

Bike Ride Fundraiser

The Ocean City Fire Department supported the Police Unity Tour 2017 by inviting the tour group to kick off their three-day bicycle ride to Washington, DC, from their new fire station at 29th Street and West Avenue. Ocean City Police Officers Chris Vivarelli, Colby Meloy, Jamie Fearnhead and Tim Sharpe left the Sheraton in

Atlantic City on May 10, 2017, with riders from the New Jersey Division of Law Enforcement United. This is the third year that Ocean City officers have participated in the ride and have raised $6000 for charities that support the families of fallen officers.

Bargaintown Rollover The Bargaintown Volunteer Fire Company responded to Poplar Avenue in the area of Patcong Creek for an MVA with rollover and fire on April 7, 2017. Bargaintown Assistant Chief Wil Hancock established command for a single-vehicle rollover still on its roof with smoke showing from the engine compartment. Neither the Jets Nor Giants Were Playing In March 31, 2017, the Rutherford Fire Department responded to Route 3 westbound just outside MetLife stadium for a rollover with entrapment MVA. East Rutherford Fire EMS was among the first on scene and advised that all parties were able to self extricate. Rutherford Engine 3 and Rescue 5 responded to assist with clean up and removal of the vehicle.

Matawan Drills On April 23, 2017, fire companies in the Matawan and Marlboro area came together to drill in LDH pipeline techniques and strategies as well as tender operations at the old Marlboro Airport property, now owned by Monmouth County. Under the direction of Matawan Chief Michitsch, firefighters established a fill site on a nearby street and used tankers to transport water to drop pools.

The drop pools were pumped through LDH down onto the runway and pumped out through the pipeline to Matawan Ladder 2990.

Crews simulated a pumper breakdown on the runway and a rapid swap out to a backup pumper. Agencies participating included Matawan Fire, Robertsville Fire, Morganville Independent Fire, Morganville Volunteer Fire, Monmouth County Public Works and Engineering, and Helmetta Fire.

Good Knockdown in Nutley

On April 16, 2017, the Nutley Fire Department responded to Overlook Terrace where they found a working fire in a two-story frame dwelling, with heavy fire venting from the front living room windows and spreading rapidly. Two engines and a ladder were requested to the scene from mutual aid as lines were stretched into the building. Companies were successful in quickly knocking down the main body of fire and limiting the spread to the second floor.

FDSOA APPARATUS SYMPOSIUM CELEBRATES 30TH ANNIVERSARY The Fire Department Safety Officers Association (FDSOA) Annual Apparatus Maintenance and Specification Symposium will celebrate its 30th Anniversary January 15-17, 2018, in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The first symposium was created after a series of meetings initiated by the International Association of Fire Chiefs’ staff, fire chiefs, several state mechanics’ associations and the Fire Apparatus Manufacturers Association to address issues concerning apparatus, maintenance and maintenance personnel.

In 1988, the first Apparatus Maintenance and Specification Symposium was held in Fort Worth, Texas, through the efforts of Fire Chief Larry McMillen, Fort Worth Fire Department, Bob Barraclough, Span Instruments, and Mary McCormack, International Society of Fire Service Instructors (ISFSI).

In 1989, after the Fire Department Safety Officers Association (FDSOA) was established as a subsidiary of the ISFSI, the Apparatus Symposium was moved to a hotel on Sandlake Road in Orlando, Florida. The symposium was designed to be educational and limited

to table tops, not exhibits. Topics covered a range from preventive maintenance efforts to issues of liability and new safety standards. As the conference grew, it moved to the Rosen Plaza hotel on International Drive. In 2013, the FDSOA headquarters were moved from Massachusetts to Michigan, and the Apparatus Symposium and the annual Safety Forum are co-located and held the same week, alternating between Orlando and Scottsdale, AZ. “Thirty years is a major accomplishment to sustain a very unique conference,” said Rich Marinucci, executive director for FDSOA. “Fire apparatus has changed significantly over the past thirty years and most importantly, the focus on safer apparatus for fire and EMS personnel.

FDSOA is proud to continue to support improvements and education in safety.”

The 30th FDSOA Annual Apparatus Maintenance and Specification Symposium will feature keynote speakers: Brad Pinsky, attorney and fire chief; Garry Briese, executive director, Colorado State Fire Chiefs; and Chief Bruce Varner (ret.).

Hammonton Warehouse Blaze

Family Displaced in Hackensack

Firefighters from throughout South Jersey responded on May 11, 2017, to Buffalo Farms Freezer and Cold Storage on Pine Road in Hammonton for a report of a structure fire. Hammonton firefighters arrived to find a fruit packing and storage warehouse fire and requested numerous mutual aid companies. Mutual aid came from Atlantic, Ocean, Burlington, Camden, Gloucester and Salem.

On May 11, 2017, Hackensack’s 4th platoon responded to Tracy Place for a report of smoke coming from a apartment on the third floor. Deputy 4 arrived to smoke showing from the eaves of a thirdfloor-rear apartment. Engine 2 arrived and stretched a tenement load to the rear, while Ladder 1 forced entry and, with Rescue 1, conducted searches and ventilation. Additional companies arrived and assisted with lines and overhaul. Teaneck was requested to the scene for a FAST. The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes. Hackensack UMC BLS and Hackensack Volunteer BLS stood by on scene. A family was displaced by the fire.

Engine 1 and Truck 1 arrived to find smoke showing from the eaves.

Operation Gotham Shield On April 25, 2017, EMS and fire agencies from New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut took part in federal exercise Gotham Shield held at MetLife Stadium.

Although the drill did not involve any patients, or administration of medical care, the goal was to gather a large amount of resources in one location in preparation for an event such as a nuclear attack. Dozens of ambulances and special operations trucks were on site along with 21 ambulance buses including the entire NJ EMS Task Force.
