Let Me Ramble This month I zeroed in on my monthly editorial after I finished having breakfast with 79 retired firefighters from the Fire Department of the City of New York. I have been attending this monthly breakfast for several years and I look forward to receiving phone calls from the group, asking if I am coming to the breakfast. To some in the group, I am just a face that quietly sits down and enjoys breakfast. To others, I am the son of a firefighter they worked with, while to my table, I am a good listener, who is expected to be at breakfast, on time and with my camera in case that special Kodak moment arises.

This group of retired firefighters has made me part of their group and share their stories with me. What have I learned from them? I have learned that the basic principal of the fire service is still alive amongst this group of seasoned retired veterans. I have written about brotherhood before. Even though all of these firefighters are long retired, the bond they had between themselves many years ago, is stronger than ever. As I age, I realize how precious life is. The memories of the past are alive and as we pray at the beginning of every breakfast for our wounded and deceased veterans and the members of the FDNY who are ill. A funny story or two always comes up about their brother or sister who is need of prayer and assistance.

I worry about the principal of brotherhood. At times I feel that this sacred belief is not as strong as it should be. Do the members of your department live and breathe this basic principal? Brotherhood is what keeps us safe when we leave the firehouse on a call. It brings us back safely to our families at the end of a stressful day. True brothers and sisters look out for one another all of the time. Are you there for your brothers and sisters when they need you?

Being a firefighter is a lot more than wearing a shirt with a Maltese cross on it. A truly dedicated responder is upset when he or she misses a call that their brothers responded to without them. Only you can look into the mirror and answer whether or not you have the dedication and commitment to perform a service that is more than a job. I have learned from the Brooklyn Breakfast Group that being a firefighter is a way of life that continues well after you retire.

I hope when you hang up your coat for the last time that the stories about you will echo through the rooms of your firehouse and make people say what a great firefighter you must have been.

ANNOUNCEMENTS WHITE HORSE 100TH ANNIVERSARY RESCHEDULES MERCER CO. PARADE In conjunction with its 100th anniversary, the White Horse Fire Company (Hamilton) will be hosting the Mercer County Fire Prevention parade on Saturday, October 4, 2014, starting at 1300.

Invitations will be sent out to fire companies throughout six states. This parade was changed from its June 14, 2014, date.

NJ STATE FIRST AID COUNCIL MARKS 85 YEARS In response to the growing need for trained emergency medical services personnel, Charles R. Measure — a former ambulance driver in France during World War I and a volunteer fireman in Belmar — started the ‘Belmar First Aid & Safety Squad’ in 1928. It was the first volunteer first aid squad in the nation.

By the following year, at least eight more such volunteer organizations had formed along the Jersey Shore. Realizing that by pooling resources they could improve patient care, standardize and purchase equipment, and provide joint training, the members agreed in 1929 to form an alliance, the New Jersey State First Aid Council (NJSFAC).

Eighty-five years later, the nonprofit NJSFAC represents nearly 300 first aid and rescue squads and more than 20,000 EMS volunteers throughout the state. The NJSFAC remains the largest organization of its kind throughout the US, according to Howard Meyer, its president since 2013.

“Their selflessness has kept the New Jersey State First Aid Council going, and the people of New Jersey well served, for more than eight decades,” Meyer said.

“EMS volunteers are still the backbone of many response systems throughout the country, especially in New Jersey,” said Meyer. “Without this core group of devoted individuals, there is no way the EMS system could handle the volume of calls received daily, never mind during disasters.

“Volunteers are the past, present and future of EMS. We’re looking forward to celebrating our 100th anniversary.”

BLOWING UP BRUSH FIRES University of New South Wales (UNSW, Australia) is using explosives to control bushfires.

Dr. Graham Doig, of the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering travelled to the Energetic Materials Research Testing Center, a high-explosives and bomb test site in a remote part of New Mexico, to scale up tests conducted at UNSW’s laboratory.

The tests used a 16-foot steel blast tube, which contained a cardboard cylinder wrapped in detonation cord, to produce a concentrated shockwave and rush of air. This was directed at a threefoot-high flame fueled by a propane burner.

“The sudden change in pressure across the shockwave, and then the impulse of the airflow behind it pushed the flame straight off the fuel source,” Doig explains. “As soon as the flame doesn’t have access to fuel anymore, it stops burning.”

Doig hopes the concept can now be scaled up to fight out-ofcontrol forest and bushfires burning in remote parts of the world.

He wants to test if it is possible to blow flames out of treetops and knock any loose, dry material in the trees that is fuelling the fire to the forest floor, where it will burn more slowly, if at all.

Explosions at Berlin Boro Blaze

On May 8, 2014, a building fire was reported in Berlin Boro on the 100 block of Cooper Road. Command 2200 arrived on location and reported a building with heavy smoke showing. Companies placed a 2-1/2 inch handline in operation as the truck company went to the roof to open up. All companies were removed from the building and set up for defensive operations because of multiple explosions from inside the building. Crews placed multiple ladder pipes and 2-1/2 inch lines in operation to surround the building. A Haz Mat unit was called to monitor the air due to the materials inside the building.

1 Fatality at Carlstadt House Fire

On Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014, the Carlstadt Fire Department was dispatched to a reported house fire on Carlyle Court. Upon arrival, heavy fire was showing from the front window of the home and heavy smoke throughout. Search teams made entry through the front door of the home, and located a deceased 76-year-old female a few feet from the entrance. The fire, which was brought under control in about 45 minutes, started in the kitchen and was determined to have been caused by a faulty electrical cord attached to a toaster oven. Mutual aid from East Rutherford, WoodRidge, Wallington and Moonachie was called to the scene to assist.

The volunteer fire companies of Elwood, Weekstown and Nesco responded to Burdick Avenue in the Elwood section of the township on April 4, 2014, for a reported structure fire. Elwood Assistant Chief Louis Critelli assumed command and reported fire showing from the roof and C side of a one-story, wood frame, single family dwelling. Command ordered the first-due engine to stretch two 1-3/4 inch lines. This enabled firefighters to contain the fire to the bathroom and attic of the structure. Firefighters laddered the building, and opened the roof and the exterior of the C side. While this was taking place, command had an engine and a water tender from the Hammonton respond to the scene. During the event, command had Laureldale cover the Elwood firehouse.

2-Alarm Follows 3-Alarm in Paterson

On Easter, April 20, 2014, while Paterson firefighters were still hitting hot spots at the scene of an earlier general alarm fire, which destroyed three buildings, a call was received for a building fire on E. 24th Street. On arrival, heavy fire was encountered in the basement of a vacant 2-1/2 story house. Companies were withdrawn as heavy smoke started pushing from the second floor and attic and an exterior attack commenced. A second alarm was requested for manpower and the fire was placed under control. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries.

Wind and Fire in Sea Isle

Recently, the Sea Isle City Fire Department responded to the 4700 block of Pleasure Avenue for a report of a structure fire. The windwhipped fire eventually destroyed three homes and damaged numerous others. Mutual aid from throughout Cape May County was called to the scene to assist in the firefighting effort. At one point, a water tender operation was put into effect as the municipal water system became critically low. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Ocean City Stops Duplex Blaze

The Ocean City Fire Department in Cape May County responded on May 1, 2014, for a report of a structure fire with flames showing on West 17th Street. On-duty Deputy Chief Charles Bowman arrived to find a two-story wood frame duplex with fire showing through the roof, and exposures on the Bravo and Delta sides. Chief Bowman requested a full recall of all off-duty firefighters and

mutual aid from the Marmora Volunteer Fire Company from Upper Township to cover the 29th Street Station and the City of Somers Point Fire Department in Atlantic County to cover the 6th Street Station. Firefighters held the fire to the structure of origin with no extension to the exposures.

Mutual Aid in East Hanover

Recently, the East Hanover Fire Department responded to a home on Highland Avenue.

Police arrived and confirmed a working structure fire. The first arriving fire chief requested mutual aid and EMS to the scene. Units from Whippany and Livingston responded to assist.

One Rio Grande FF Injured Recently, Rio Grande Fire Company 7201 arrived at a structure fire to find fire blowing out the windows on sides C and D. First arriving Quint 7254’s crew searched the structure. Crews could only get so far because of the smoke and flames and all crews evacuated the structure. As crews were exiting the building a firefighter fell through the floor but extricated himself; he was sent to the hospital with a knee injury.

Mays Landing Factory Fire The volunteer fire companies of Mays Landing, Cologne, and Laureldale responded to Piramal Glass on Harding Highway on April 11, 2014, for a structure fire. Car 1811, Mays Landing Assistant Chief Ken Badger, Jr., arrived and assumed command.

Cologne Tower 18 arrived, and Mays Landing Captain Gene Wellington assumed interior operations. Operations had firefighters acquire a high reach to go up and begin extinguishing the fire in a duct at the underside of the roof. Interior operations reported electrical arcing and Atlantic City Electric Company was called and had the power to the entire building shut down. As a further precaution, command had South Jersey Gas Company shut gas off as well. Cologne Chief Shawn Vallauri was placed in charge of ventilating the structure and Laureldale Chief Chris Tilley was in charge of the manpower pool.

Bar Burns in Westmont

On May 21, 2014, a fire was reported at Fischer’s Tavern on Cuthbert Boulevard in Westmont. Command arrived and struck the all-hands box for heavy fire conditions in the rear of a two-story structure. Companies secured a water supply and placed a 2-1/2 inch line in operation with heavy fire conditions in the enclosed deck area of the building. The bulk of the fire was knocked down as crews stretched additional lines to the interior to check for extension.

Dryer Fire in Linwood

All Hands in Camden City

The City of Linwood Fire Department was dispatched on March 18, 2014, to Grammercy Avenue for a report of a dryer fire.

Linwood Fire Department’s Captain Kroger arrived on location and reported smoke showing from a one-story, wood frame, single-family dwelling. Linwood Chief Charles ‘Chick’ Kisby arrived and assumed command, requesting a recall of all off-duty Linwood firefighters. The fire was in the dryer’s plastic vent and had spread to the surrounding wall extending up the wall and igniting insulation. Firefighters opened up the wall and were able to contain the fire to the area of origin. Also responding were the Linwood Police Department and City of Linwood EMS. - Fire News photo by Ken Badger

On March 20, 2014, a dwelling fire was reported in Squad 7’s locale on Mechanic Street in Camden City. Squad 7 arrived to heavy fire showing from the second floor. Battalion 1 arrived and struck an all hands. A water supply was secured as a 1-¾ inch handline was placed in operation followed by a back-up line.

Searches were negative as the truck company opened up. The fire was placed under control with no injuries to firefighters.

Two for One in Milmay House Fire The Atlantic County volunteer fire companies of Milmay (Station 12-4) and Richland (Station 12-1) from Buena Vista Township and the Dorothy Volunteer Fire and EMS (Station 12-7, Squad 12-7) from Weymouth Township responded on April 14, 2014, to Broad Street in Milmay for a structure fire. Milmay Fire Chief Eric Hensel arrived and assumed command and found a fire on the Bravo side of a one-story, wood frame, single-family dwelling attached to a two-story wood frame addition.

The first-in engine stretched a preconnect and quickly extinguished the fire. Command then ordered the exterior of the bravo side opened up and searched for signs of fire. Firefighters also opened up the interior and basement.

2 Houses Destroyed in Hamilton Twp. On April 29, 2014, the volunteer fire companies of Cologne, Mays Landing and Cardiff were dispatched to the 900 block of Pebble Beach Drive in the Fairways Development in Hamilton for a structure fire. Cardiff Engine 1512 and Cologne Tower 18 arrived to find two single-family, one-story, wood frame dwellings well involved. High winds pushed the fire onto neighboring structures in the cul-de-sac. Numerous mutual aid companies were dispatched and the fire was held to two structures destroyed and two structures damaged. Morganville Fire: Water Problems Abound In the early morning of May 7, 2014, two Morganville fire companies in Marlboro Township were dispatched to Marseilles Court for a reported basement fire. Two residents escaped thanks to smoke alarms. Nearby Robertsville Assistant Fire Chief Brandon Beja arrived on location and reported a fully involved, large family dwelling, and struck a general alarm. The first-due engine, Marlboro 28-1-75, set up on the long winding uphill driveway. Incident command was immediately aware of the water supply issues and requested tankers. As tankers began to arrive, long distances without hydrants and tight, hilly streets complicated water issues further. Monmouth County was notified to dispatch an LDH pipeline to the scene.

Nearly 5,500 feet of five-inch hose was stretched. Once water supply issues were resolved, multiple monitor devices and one deck gun were utilized to dump water on the now collapsed home. New Jersey State Forest Fire Service operated on the perimeter. Responding was Morganville Independent, Morganville Volunteer, Marlboro, Robertsville, Holmdel, Hazlet, Union Beach, Keansburg, East Freehold, North Centerville, and covers from So. Old Bridge FD, Gordons Corner FD, Freehold Independent FD. The fire is under investigation.

A dwelling fire was reported on Cedar Avenue on May 22, 2014.

Police arrived on location and reported heavy fire, requesting the all hands box. Command arrived to a 2-1/2 story, single family, wood frame dwelling with heavy fire conditions on Division C. Crews went into operation with a 21/2 inch handline on the first floor. A water supply was secured as a 13/4 inch handline went to the second floor. Crews knocked down the bulk of the fire and opened up. EMS treated and transported the elderly homeowner for smoke inhalation.

Quick Knockdown in East Camden On May 17, 2014, a dwelling fire was reported in East Camden on 36th Street. Camden County Communications advised units it was a dwelling fire. Crews arrived at a 1-1/2 story, single family, wood frame dwelling with smoke showing.

Command reported fire conditions in the back room.

Engine 9 placed a 1-3/4 inch handline in operation. The fire was knocked down and placed under control with no injuries to firefighters.

Chimney/House Fire in Dorothy The Atlantic County volunteer fire companies of Dorothy Fire and Rescue (Station 12-7, Squad 12-7) from Weymouth Township, Estell Manor City (Station 12-5), and Milmay (Station 12-4) from Buena Vista Township responded to Tuckahoe Road on April 17, 2014, for a structure fire.

Dorothy Fire Chief Robert Gibney arrived and reported nothing showing from a two-story wood frame structure, commercial on the ground floor and residential on the second. Dorothy Assistant Chief Jess Hand arrived and assumed interior ops and found a wood stove on the second floor burning. Firefighters laddered the building to check the status of the chimney and found it filled with creosote, and opened up around the base of the chimney and found some extension.

Vacant Property Blaze The volunteer fire companies of Cardiff and Bargaintown responded to West Jersey Avenue for a report of a structure fire on April 25, 2014. Cardiff Lt. Gil Zonge arrived and assumed command and reported the fire was in an abandoned property in the rear of the home. Command also advised all companies to use caution as the property was overgrown and there were abandoned cars scattered about.

Once firefighters made their way in, they discovered an abandoned truck in the remains of the garage. Cardiff firefighters used two engines, while the Bargaintown engine shuttled water to the scene. Also responding were the Egg Harbor Township Police, Egg Harbor Township Ambulance Squad, and the Atlantic City Electric Company.

On May 22, 2014, a dwelling fire was reported in Woodlynne.

Engines 10, 16, 1732, Ladders 18-3, 15-1 and Battalion 1 were dispatched. Companies arrived at a 1-1/2 story, single-family, wood frame dwelling with smoke showing from the basement windows.

Crews stretched a 1-3/4 inch handline to the basement and found a dryer on fire. A back up line was stretched. The fire was contained to the dryer and knocked down without extension.

Mall Dumpster Fire in Cologne The volunteer fire companies of Cologne and Mays Landing responded to the Festival Mall on Route 322 for a report of a dumpster fire.

Cologne Chief Shawn Valluri arrived and assumed command and found that an electrical malfunction from a nearby utility pole caused debris from the pole to fall into the dumpster and ignite. The fire was extinguished using one preconnect from Cologne’s engine.

Hammonton Fills Water Drop Forest fires ravaged the South Jersey area during the week of April 24 to 27, 2014, with fires burning in Ocean, Cumberland and Burlington counties. The City of Hammonton Fire Department stood by at the Hammonton Municipal Airport and filled the Forest Fire Service’s airplane during the three days for a fire in Burlington County. Nearly 15,000 gallons of water were dropped.

Rush Hour MVA in Bridgewater

On May 7, 2014, a rush hour MVA snarled traffic on Route 22 East in Bridgewater at the intersection of Route 28 when one of the vehicles burst into flames. North Branch and Green Knoll Firefighters responded to the scene to find one vehicle on fire after rear ending another. The other vehicle was able to drive away and both drivers were uninjured. A passing truck driver knocked down the bulk of the flames with a fire extinguisher prior to the firefighters arrival.

One Fatality in Brick Blaze

On March 16, 2014, Laurelton Fire Company was dispatched to a reported a structure fire on Nasto Terrace. Quickly after the original dispatch, Brick Fire Headquarters struck the general alarm tone, prompting all four Brick companies to respond. Dispatch advised Chief David Bahrenburg, that PD was on location and had multiple victims with severe burns at the fully involved, one-story multiple family apartment building. First arriving engine laid a five-inch line from the hydrant to the front of the structure and multiple 1-ž and 2-½ inch handlines were put in service to make aggressive attack. Crews from Laurelton and Herbertsville entered the exposure units to hold the fire within the units already involved. Evacuation tones were sounded 20 minutes into the fire, and a roof collapse occurred in the center of the structure. Crews continued to operate multiple handlines with Fire Command placing the fire under control about an hour after dispatch. Assisting Laurelton and Herbertsville at the scene was Pioneer Hose Company, Point Beach and Point Pleasant FAST. Coverage for Brick was handled by Breton Woods, Lakewood and Point Pleasant Beach. The fire was determined to be started by improperly discarded smoking materials.

Two Over in North Branch

On May 6, 2014, North Branch Firefighters along with Branchburg Police and Rescue Squad were dispatched to a report of a multivehicle MVA with roll over on Readington and Narragansett Roads.

Branchburg Police confirmed that two vehicles were involved and that both had rolled. Upon arrival of the NBVFC, one vehicle was

found upside down on its roof and leaking fluids on the roadway while the second vehicle was on its side with no leaking fluids.

Branchburg Rescue Squad tended to the victims of the accident while NBVFC firefighters secured the vehicles.

Truck vs. School Bus MVA in Milmay

The Atlantic County volunteer fire companies of Milmay (Station 12-4), along with the Dorothy Fire and Rescue (Station 12-7, Squad 12-7) responded on April 28, 2104, to Tuckahoe Road in Milmay for a commercial motor vehicle crash. Dorothy Fire Chief Robert Gibney, arrived on location and found a construction van crashed

into the rear of a school bus that had slowed to pick up children.

Seven children on the bus were checked for injuries by EMTs. Milmay Fire Chief Eric Hensel was in command. The New Jersey State Police investigated the accident.

Car in the Water in Mays Landing

The Mays Landing Volunteer Fire Company, the Mays Landing Rescue Squad, the Hamilton Township Dive Team, and Hamilton Township Police responded to Lake Lenape at the boathouse on May 6, 2014, for a report of a car in the water. The driver of the car was attempting to put his boat in the water when he became injured, causing the car to become submerged after he fell out of the vehicle. Heavy Entrapment on GSP The volunteer fire companies of Farmington and Bargaintown along with Egg Harbor Township EMS, New Jersey State Police, and Atlanticare paramedics responded to Milepost 32.1 northbound on the Garden State Parkway on May 24, 2014, for a motor vehicle crash. EMS arrived to find a SUV off the highway and one occupant, the driver, heavily entrapped inside the vehicle with the vehicle resting against a tree on the driver’s side. Firefighters were faced with a difficult extrication that took 30 minutes to complete and the driver was taken by ambulance to the hospital. 18 Mos. Old Medevac’d Recently, the volunteer fire companies of Cardiff and Bargaintown responded to establish a landing zone for the EHT Ambulance Squad who was en route with an 18-monthold child who was struck and run over by an automobile. The child was transported by helicopter and was last reported in stable condition.

5 Injured, 1 Dead in Atlantic Co. MVA On April 13, 2014, the Estell Manor Volunteer Fire Department (Station 12-5), Dorothy Fire & EMS (Station 12-7, Squad 12-7) and Medic 12 responded to 109 Route 50 in the area of Atlantic County Park for a motor vehicle crash that involved two vehicles with a total of six people. When Medic 12 arrived they requested two Medevacs. Estell Manor Chief John Wagner assumed command and requested the Mays Landing Volunteer Fire Company from Hamilton Township to respond and establish a landing zone inside Atlantic County Park for the landing of the Medevac helicopter.

Three were transported by ground, two by air and one was DOA at the scene.

Multiple Injuries in Route 130 MVA On May 17, 2014, Battalion 11 arrived at a fourvehicle accident with an occupant trapped, one ejected, and multiple people down. Command requested a total of eight BLS units and four ALS units. Engine 1132, Engine 11-1 and Ladder 11-5 worked to free the occupant from the vehicle on its side. Crews removed a section of the roof and post to extricate the victim. Three people were transported to the Trauma Unit. BLS from Pennsauken.

MVA The City of Somers Point Fire Department, Somers Point Police, and EMS from the Shore Medical Center responded on April 26, 2104, to Groveland Avenue and Shore Road for a motor vehicle crash. EMS treated one person and transported him to the medical center while firefighters made the vehicle safe for removal. The crash is under investigation by Somers Point Police.

Pick-up Rolls in Somers Pt. The City of Somers Point Fire Department responded to the intersection of Ocean Avenue and Shore Road for a report of a motor vehicle crash on April 22, 2014. Firefighters arrived to find a pickup truck on its side, but no entrapment. Firefighters rendered the vehicle safe and Shore Medical Center EMS transported the driver to the hospital. The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Somers Point Police Department.

One Injured in Bargaintown MVA

The volunteer fire companies of Bargaintown and Scullville, along with Egg Harbor Township EMS, Police, and Medic 10 responded to the intersection of Zion and Old Zion Roads on April 17, 2014, for a motor vehicle crash with entrapment. Bargaintown Assistant Chief Will Hancock arrived to find one occupant trapped in a vehicle pinned by the second vehicle. Scullville Rescue 1537 used their cable winch to pull the second vehicle away so the trapped occupant could be extricated. The person was quickly extricated and transported to Atlantic City Medical Center, Atlantic City Campus. The cause of the crash is under investigation by EHT Police.

Truck in Water Off Great EH Bridge

A multi-agency response was needed after a tractor-trailer dump truck plunged off of the southbound side of the Great Egg Harbor bridge spanning the Garden State Parkway connecting Cape May and Atlantic Counties on May 23, 2014. Two workers saw the truck go over and immediately dove in and kept the driver afloat until rescuers arrived. The Marmora Volunteer Fire Company and Upper Township EMS of Cape May County were the first to arrive, with Marmora Chief Jay Newman assuming command.

Firefighters and EMS used portable extrication tools to remove the driver, who was medevac’d and listed in critical condition. The City of Somers Point Volunteer Fire Department, the Mays Landing Volunteer Dive Team, the N.J. State Police, and the U.S. Coast Guard all launched rescue boats with divers to search the truck for any other occupants. The Atlantic County Hazmat Team responded, and the Atlantic County Park Service responded.

Traffic on the Parkway was halted several times during the event greatly snarling traffic on the start of the Memorial Day weekend.

4 Critical, 3 Die in Pleasantville MVA The City of Pleasantville Fire and EMS responded on May 26, 2014, to Franklin Boulevard for a report of a motor vehicle crash. Responders arrived to find that a vehicle had struck a New Jersey Transit Bus. The car contained five persons. The remainder were extricated

by Pleasantville firefighters. Rescue 8 and one engine from the City of Absecon were requested to respond and assist with the extrication, and the amount of injuries required an EMS Task Force to respond. A total of seven persons were transported to the Atlantic City Trauma Center by the N.J. Mass Casualty Bus. Four people were listed in critical condition, and three died. Responding were Pleasantville Fire and EMS, City of Absecon Fire & EMS, Galloway Township EMS, Egg Harbor Township EMS, Atlanticare Paramedics, Shore Medical Center EMS, Pleasantville Police, N.J. Transit Police, N.J. State Police Fatal Accident Investigators.

Real-Time Practice in Ocean City The City of Ocean City Fire Department in Cape May County took time out of the busy day to take advantage of a rare opportunity; training in a real-life environment. Firefighters were given the opportunity to train in a structure slated for demolition — a three-story building formerly used as a retreat house for the local Catholic diocese. The day began with a discussion on responding to gas emergencies, then training on pumping, practicing techniques for raising hoses to upper levels, as well as stretching-in to ensure the right amount of hose gets pulled. Once inside, the hose was charged and extinguishment procedures were practiced. The OCFD also hosted numerous surrounding volunteer fire companies in training at this structure, with a lot of ideas shared among the career and volunteer firefighters.

Florence Gives Civilian Honor Award The Florence Township Board of Fire Commissioners honored resident Darnell Taylor for his heroic efforts in saving the lives of four people last month during its meeting on May 12.

Taylor dove into the Delaware River after seeing a van in the water and helped pulled the people to safety on April 15, 2014. Joann Smith, 49, was charged with three counts of attempted murder and three counts of endangering the welfare of children (ages 15, 14 and 13), after investigators said she drove onto a boat ramp off of West Front Street. 50 Years of Service On May 5, 2014, Bargaintown Safety Officer Ken Badger, and Lt. Clarence Abbott were recognized for their more than 50 years of service to firefighting from the Bargaintown Volunteer Fire Company #2 of the Egg Harbor Township Fire Department.

Both officers received a fireman statue thanking them for their dedicated service. Both men continue to proudly serve their community putting in countless hours of service.

DWI Exercise at Robbinsville HS

A large-scale simulated fatal DWI crash, referred to as “Operation Smashed,” was held on the fields adjacent to Robbinsville High School as part of the annual senior awareness day on May 2, 2014. First responders from the Robbinsville Fire Department, Capital Health Systems, New Jersey State Police NorthSTAR, Brenna Funeral Home, and Bordentown Township Police Department K9 unit responded to the scene, making the scenario as real as possible for the students watching. The simulation was designed to teach students a sobering lesson about how one wrong choice can alter multiple lives. It was just one of the many events the senior class experienced that day.

Freehold Independent Search Drill Cries for help were the sounds firefighters from the Freehold Township Independent Fire Company, Station 16-1, heard as they were progressing down the smoke filled hallway, about to make entry into a smoke filled room. The screams were real, but they were made by the departments’ officers as members were advancing into the newly constructed search room. Mannequins — adult and child— were placed in the room and teams split up to locate and remove the victims. The department, in addition to the normal monthly drill, has added the search drill as a monthly extra drill. Most people when they practice something do it with the attitude of doing it until they get it right. Firefighters practice with the attitude of practicing so you can’t get it wrong.

Terry Farrell was a father, a husband, a brother, and a dedicated firefighter who lost his life on September 11, 2001, during the WTC attack. A decorated member of Rescue 4/FDNY and chief of the Dix Hills Volunteer Fire Department, Terry was a devoted firefighter who embodied the spirit of courage and giving. The Terry Farrell Firefighter Fund was established in his memory to assist firefighters and families across the nation with financial, educational and medical support, and to provide equipment donations for fire departments in need.
