Madison Handles Handles Madison Lines Down Call Lines

Madison Rescue 101 and Chief 111 responded to Ritchey Road for a lines down call. On arrival they found telecommunications lines drooping on the east side of the road and a primary power line

down on the west side arcing. in the brush. The roadway was not affected and AEP was notified.

Chimney Fire in Glendale

Glendale Engine 45 responded on mutual aid along with crews from Springdale, Colerain, Forest Park, Fairfield and Evendale to a single-alarm structure fire in Greenhills on January 15, 2024, at around noon. Upon arrival, the crew threw two ladders and made

way to the roof to assess conditions in and around the chimney. It was determined to be a chimney fire that extinguished itself. Crews laid water supply and stretched hoses for fire control and provided ventilation.

Butler Tech Rural Ground Firefighting Firefighter Walt Ritchie spent the morning with the students of Butler Tech’s High School Fire Rescue program going over rural fire-ground operations. We’re always happy to help shape the young minds of those who have an interest in the fire service.

3 Injured in Racers Way MVA

American Township Fire Department was dispatched to Eastown Mercy Health St. Rita’s, and two to Lima Memorial Hospital, all Road at Racers Way for a two-vehicle MVA. Willoughby Trains on Car Into Building Calls

The Eastside Technical Rescue Team and Willoughby firefighters trained in the old Steak n’ Shake building on SOM Center Road for three days. The scenario was a car that had crashed into the build-

ing, which allowed all participants to identify critical needs and summon the help of technical experts to mitigate and stabilize a situation like this.

Banana Boat Training

Madison Township Fire Department held a training session on their new “banana boat,” which is used for both water and ice rescues. Thanks to the Licking County EMA for assistance in acquiring this equipment. While we didn’t have access to an icy pond for the exercise, we have included a photo to demonstrate its usefulness in the winter time. Half a dozen members and a junior firefighter trained on using the craft.

Glendale Members Complete Blue Card Incident Training Recently, several Glendale Fire Department members completed their Blue Card incident command simulations to become certified incident commanders. All members were required to complete a 50-hour online training program. Over the weekend they completed simulations for residential, commercial, multi-family, strip mall and big-box structures.

Gets AgCredit Award In November 2023, our Firefighters Association was awarded a grant from AgCredit, ACA to purchase a new pump and water pack for our field fire ATV. We are happy to share that we have recently taken delivery of the new Kimtek Filelite pack. Once fully connected, our crews will be training on it to be prepared for grass and field fire operations.

New Apparatus for Delaware County EMS Delaware County EMS took delivery of their Medic 7 from Demers Ambulances recently. This ambulance was purchased through Penn Care and will be housed at their Genoa Township station. A few years ago, our DCEMS truck committee designed the ambulances, which come equipped with: a Power Load systems; Growler Siren systems; door forward design; highly visible graphics package; mobile and forward facing primary provider seat; dual seals on all doors to keep better temp inside; storage space that is designed around the equipment carried by our department; Eco-idle anF-550 chassis with a gas engine - Photos courtesy of Delaware County EMS

Woodville Gets a New Engine

The Woodville Township Fire Department just took delivery of a brand new Sutphen Engine. The engine holds 1000 gallons of water, a 30-gallon foam system, has a remote control deck gun, side mount pump, six-person cab, 360-degree observation camera, pre-connect

front suction for drafting and custom mounting by FMI. Brand new Scott air packs are included and it’s equipped with Milwaukee tools and battery-operated scene lights. The new truck is Ohio-made and replaces a 1996 Pierce.

THE CONGRESSIONAL FIRE SERVICES INSTITUTE (CFSI) HAS CHANGE OF DATE The Congressional Fire Services Institute (CFSI) has changed the date of the 34th Annual National Fire and Emergency Services Symposium and Dinner.

Originally scheduled for April 24-25, 2024, the program has been rescheduled for April 29-30, 2024.

CFSI changed the date so we could conduct our program while Congress was in session. While CFSI selects the dates for the program five years out due to the demand for venues in the spring months, Congress releases the congressional calendar shortly before the start of a new legislative session. Unfortunately, the schedule recently released for 2024 has Congress out of session the week of our program.

Each year, we aim to make the trip to Washington, DC, a positive experience for all our guests. The date change presents other opportunities for us to enhance the program. Whereas in the past, the dinner took place on Day 2, it will now take place on the first day (April 29), as will the seminar program. We will focus Day 2 (April 30) on Capitol Hill activities to maximize the fire service presence in Washington, DC, and send a strong message to our federal legislators about the political force of our nation’s fire and emergency services.

Obituary Portage’s Kevin Pfaff

Recently, the Portage Fire District, along with members of Mid County EMS, Carroll Township EMS and Fire Department, and Danbury Township Fire Department, were privileged to honor retired Rocky Ridge Fire Department Chief Kevin Pfaff, who passed away December 31, 2023 at Mercy Health-St. Charles Hospital. He was 69.

Kevin was a graduate of Oak Harbor High School, and was a retired diesel mechanic at CSX Transportation, where he worked for 38 years. An active community member, Kevin was a member of Rocky Ridge Volunteer Fire Department for over 30 years, serving as Chief for over 10 years. He also was a member of Mid-County Emergency Medical Service, Oak Harbor, for many years, and was a member of the former Moose Lodge of Port Clinton. Kevin enjoyed fishing, but his greatest love was his grandbabies.

He is survived by his sons, Jason Pfaff, Woodville, OH; Anthony (Jolene) Pfaff, Greencastle, IN; brothers, Kenneth (Lois) Pfaff, Oak Harbor, and Karl Pfaff, Rocky Ridge; and sister, Charlene Hayes, Rocky Ridge. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Aaron , Teagen , Evelyn, Faith, Kristalynn, Holden, Lyla, and Desirae. Kevin was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Sandy Gilbert.

Our sincerest condolences to Ret. Chief Pfaffs family. Rest easy, sir. We have it from here.

Portage FFs Assn.

Gets Equipment Grant from AgCredit Portage Firefighters Association was the recipient of a generous grant from AgCredit, ACA as part of their 2023 Mission fund. These grant funds are being utilized to purchase a new, better ‘skid’ unit for their side-by-side. The new equipment will provide better utilization of resources in field/wildland fires. This is the second grant that the Portage Fire District Firefighters Association has received from Ag Credit in the last few years. With the nature of its rural area, the last grant was used purchase grain rescue equipment.
