ANNOUNCEMENTS
From the Editor’s Desk Dennis Whittam, Editor
PTSD; is your department prepared to help YOU? Many years ago, I responded to a horrific motor vehicle accident that claimed the life of a young child. Several days later I received a call from my chief, asking me to attend a meeting at our firehouse. When I walked into the room, everyone who was on the call was there. After several cups of coffee, my chief walked into the room and sat down to talk to us. The meeting was informal, but as we progressed, the meeting targeted the fatal call we all responded to. The intention was simple. My chief wanted to make sure that everyone understood that we did the best we could do to save this child's life. It was made clear that if we needed to talk more about what happened, he would be available to us at anytime. He also urged us to look out for one another and to accept everyone's feelings about the call. I have always respected Chief Doug Lotten for his concern about his responders. This entire story came to mind the second I heard about the Aurora movie theater massacre. My mind immediately thought of the responders that went home after the call and had to deal with the flashbacks of this horrific situation. The responders went home and had to grasp the scope of the tragedy. They had to deal with the visualizations of 12 killings and dozens of people that were in dire need of medical help. The only comfort to be taken from the situation was the knowledge that you did your best and saved the lives of the dozens of people who were wounded or injured. In the true tradition of our brotherhood, I think it is commendable that the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) shared their experiences of 9/11 and sent a group of trained responders to offer counseling to the Aurora responders. To be traumatized by a tragic event is normal. However it is important that everyone debriefs about the situation and understands that it is okay to be sad and even disturbed by the event. Every department must take the time to let their members know that the department chaplain, senior members everyone respects, or brother and sister responders are there to talk to for reassurance that you had done the best you could. The type of events that lead to PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) will usually follow a traumatic event; one in which your understanding of your normal world and the sense of safety and trust we normally feel is shattered. Bad dreams, feeling fearful and finding it hard to put the event out of your mind are normal reactions. For many these feelings are short-lived but if you are suffering from PTSD these symptoms can last for weeks, months and even years and may even increase in severity. There are three generic symptoms: Re-experiencing the traumatic event; avoiding reminders of the trauma; and increased anxiety and emotional arousal. If you or any of your fellow first responders are suffering in this way, seek help, whether from a friend, a co-worker, a chaplain or a psychologist. PTSD is insidious, and it is real. Ignoring it will not make it go away. Seek help. In closing, I ask you this; is your department ready to counsel its responders should the need arise? -Dennis

The home on Prospect Drive was reduced to rubble from the explosion and 14 people were hospitalized as a result of the explosion. The initial investigation was focusing on two 200-pound propane tanks as the source of the explosion. Officials condemned both houses on each side of the explosion. The American Red Cross assisted in finding 10 people temporary shelter. -Fire News photos by Mike Descalso and David Rubin

Never Forget Our Fallen The wounds of 9/11 have not fully healed and continue to bring pain to the families that have lost loved ones from illnesses that developed and continue to surface more than a decade after the World Trade Center attack. As we remember our fallen on September 11, 2012, think of the families who have lost loved ones. Keep them in your prayers so that they may continue to grow strong as we honor everyone who lost their life on 9/11. Take the time to visit the 9/11 Tribute Center (www.tributewtc.org/index.php) and the New York City Fire Museum (www.nycfiremuseum.org/ ).
“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them. - Quoted by Rudy Giuliani from Laurence Binyon's Ode of Remembrance from his poem For the Fallen.

On Saturday July 28, 2012, just after 1200, the East Farmingdale Fire Company responded to Dale Street for a reported commercial building fire. Arriving units encountered a large two-story building that was heavily involved. The structure housed Paragon Recycling. Numerous garbage trucks and piles of garbage were burning, which spread throughout the building and quickly destroyed it. Chief of Department Kilbridge was in command of the scene and established an exterior attack, which
was coordinated by Assistant Chiefs Sherback, Wisz and Greco. Numerous handlines from Engine 1-5-2 and master streams from East Farmingdale Ladder's 1-5-5, 1-5-15 and Wyandanch Ladder 1-10-5 were put into operation. Firefighters fought the fire well into the evening as heavy equipment was brought in to pull apart sections of the building and the garbage piles to hit unreachable hot spots. There were no serious injuries reported and the cause of the fire is
under investigation. Nassau and Suffolk FD’s Share Almost $1 Million JSK Inc. announces the selection of 15 Nassau and Suffolk County Fire Departments to share almost $1 million in Federal support. The Great Neck Alert FD has sponsored a REGIONAL SAFER (Staffing and Fire Emergency Response) award for $500,600. The award will be spearheaded by Great Neck and will be shared by the East Williston, Vigilant, Albertson, Manhasset-Lakeville, New Hyde Park, Lynbrook, Lakeville, South Hempstead, Port Washington, Plandome, Floral Park Center and Bellerose Terrace Fire Departments. The award will allow for the placement of TV, radio, print, and Internet advertising in addition, to other initiatives like web-based programs. The program also funds a full-time volunteer coordinator to actively recruit volunteers, attend high school and college fairs, street fairs, and community meetings. The application was prepared by Williston Park based Grant-Guys, NYS's largest fire grant company. To date, Grant-Guys has produced over $600,000 in State funds and over $2 million in Federal Funding for Nassau and Suffolk County Fire Departments. Also, both the SMITHTOWN AND LYNBROOK FIRE DEPARTMENTS will share over $240,000 in Federal support. These projects, although similar, will focus recruitment efforts and offer added insurance enhancements in a move to bolster insurance deficiencies when dealing with injured volunteer firefighters. Lastly, FEMA has announced that it will increase the amount of a previous REGIONAL AWARD hosted by the ManhassetLakeville FD. In that award, FEMA will increase funding to the Driving Simulation Project based on the final cost of the equipment and the number of regional partners included in the award. The award involves fire departments from Albertson, Great Neck Alert, Great Neck Vigilant and Manhasset-Lakeville. Port Washington joined the group based on the value of the driving simulation project.

‘Move Over Guys, I’ll Drive’
The Greenlawn Volunteer Fire Department recently marked a milestone in their 110 year history by welcoming a new crop of fire truck operators that features the departments first female chauffeur. Under the direction of Department Instructor Ric Hardesty, firefighters Krysta Jorgensen, Angelo Santomauro and Pete Skura successfully completed the departments comprehensive Driver Training Program, which taught them to safely and effectively drive, pump and operate five differ-
ent emergency response vehicles. “I congratulate Krysta, Angelo and Pete on this great accomplishment,” said Department Chief Scott Dalrymple. “They will be a welcomed addition to the outstanding group of vehicle operators we have here in the Greenlawn Fire Department.” When asked about being the first female chauffer in the department's long and distinguished history, Krysta Jorgensen remarked, “I think it’s kind of cool. It’s an important job and
something I have wanted to do since I joined the department five years ago. When I stared the course I didn’t realize that no female in the department had done it before, but I guess it is kind of a big deal. Babylon Chiefs Hold Training Seminar As the summer came to an end last year, the East coast of the United States including Long Island and the New York Metropolitan area were threatened with the possibility of a direct hit from the category 2, Hurricane Irene. Thankfully, it decreased in intensity to a category 1 as it made contact with our area. This unexpected Labor Day storm forced us to view our Hurricane preparedness and Emergency Management awareness. Recently, the Town of Babylon Chief's Association hosted their annual training seminar at North Babylon Fire Headquarters. The committee selected to make hurricane preparedness and Emergency Management the topic of the evening. The speakers for the seminar were Director of Emergency Management for Suffolk County, Edward Snyder and Suffolk County Emergency Resource Coordinator, John Jordan. It should be noted that John has been appointed as the new Deputy Commisioner of Suffolk County FRES. Ed and John have both been volunteers for many years rising through the ranks of their respective departments to finally become Chief's. They also bring a vast amount of experience with Suffolk County and their knowledge is invaluable. -Fire News photos by Brad Maier

Nassau County Junior Firefighters Association took part in distributing toys at Cohen's Children's Hospital this summer. Besides all the meetings and training that are done throughout the year, these kids found time to collect and distribute toys at the hospital when they found out they were in need. Over 70 juniors, along with 18 advisors delivered over 100 toys that day. A lot of work went into this effort with special thanks to Advisor Patty
Seifert from the East Rockaway Juniors for organizing the collection and Advisor Frank Ceglio from the Bethpage Juniors for coordinating the contact and drop off, along with them and their juniors, were juniors and advisors from East Norwich, Garden City Park, Massapequa, Plandome, Plainview, and Wantagh. Obituary
E. Northport Ex-Chief Leroy ‘Roy’ Kennedy Mourned The East Northport Fire Department mourned the loss of their most senior and currently oldest active member, Ex-Chief Leroy “Roy” Kennedy who passed away July 12, 2012 at the age of 92. Roy’s service to the department and community spanned nearly 64 years, and in that time he served as Hook & Ladder Company Lieutenant and Captain from 1952-1958, Assistant Chief from 1958-1960, moving up to Chief of the Department from 1960-1962, a job he fulfilled with distinction and honor. After leaving the Chief’s office, Roy was later elected to the Board of Fire Commissioners in 1972 and served for ten years. He was also the Department Chaplain as well as the Chaplain for the Town of Huntington Fire Chief’s Council, and offered members a quiet faith and gentleness of spirit by bringing a great deal of comfort to those he touched. During his years of service, Roy was selected to receive the Firefighter of the Year Award three times. In 2008 at the department’s 100th Anniversary installation, Roy was honored for 60 years of dedicated service and received many awards and honors. Many may remember Roy as the firefighter who rang the Memorial Bell at Headquarters during Department services and as the Master of Ceremonies for many years at the Annual Fireman’s Fair. Roy was a WWII veteran and served with the U.S. Air Force B-29 Group in the Pacific Theatre. He worked as a Superintendent of construction with LILCO for 38 years, responsible for much of the electrical infrastructure across the island. Roy was predeceased by his beloved wife Joy, and was married for 55 years. He is survived by his sons Roy, Richard, Ex-Captain of the Terryville FD, and Michael, Chief of the Yaphank FD, and many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Wake services were held at Nolan & Taylor-Howe Funeral Home in Northport, with Funeral Mass at St. Anthony of Padua Church in East Northport. Interment followed at St. Philip Neri Cemetery. -Fire News photos by Steve Silverman

Expendables Motorcycle Club Holds Poker Run On July 29th the Expendables Motorcycle Club held the First Annual Poker Run to benefit the Fisher House. The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need. Because members of the military and their families are stationed worldwide and must often travel great distances for specialized medical care, Fisher House Foundation donates "comfort homes" built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful time-during hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury. Despite the threat of bad weather, a good number of riders came out to support this cause, showing their dedication to the men and women of our armed services that have given so much of themselves. The route took them from Holbrook Fire Department Station Two, down Sunrise Highway, with a scenic ride to Suffolk Harley Davidson, then on to the VA hospital at Northport and then to the Stony Brook boat works, ending at Irish Times in Holbrook with a fantastic after party. The poker run was a huge success raising much needed funds to continue the mission of Fisher House. Many prizes were given away including an HDTV 50/50 and many Sobieski Vodka Prizes. We would like to congratulate all our winners and even some of the not so lucky riders that attended. We certainly look forward to seeing everyone next year. We would like to thank the following sponsors, WBAB, Cavalier and Associates, Sobieski
Vodka, Cara Garafolo for designing the flyers, Holbrook Fire District Board of commissioners the Officers and Members, Irish Times, Manhattan Beer, Finishing Touch, and the bands Train Wreck, Smokey Bones, and Krispy Lettuce band. The club is made up of true friendship, respect, and brotherhood. We believe that family and work comes first, club second. We wanted a club that would promote camaraderie and loyalty between all law enforcement, military, fire, EMS and other service personnel. They ride in remembrance of the honor and sacrifice of our brothers who gave their lives to help others in support of this Great Nation. -Fire News photos by Ron Monteleone
