By now, everyone knows that LED is the most effective form of lighting in todays world. But do you know the difference between this new-age technology and that classic forms of lighting from our past? Take a minute to learn about the strength and weaknesses of each style of light.

HiViz LED Lighting offers a variety of LEDs in different color temperatures based on applications. LED Lights do not use a bulb, making them much more durable and require less energy to power.

HID Lighting runs at a 5000k temperature for a super white beam color. HID lights require a bulb, starter and ballast to operate. They have a higher output per wattage than Halogen bulbs.

Tungsten-Halogen bulbs use an oversized globe and specially engineered filament to enhance light output. Halogen has a soft yellow light temperature.

LIGHTING TERMINOLOGY BEAM PATTERNS, LUX, LUMENS AND MORE

Every industry seems to have their own complicated language. Thankfully the terminology used in the lighting world is fairly simple to understand. Use these images and explanations to get a basic understanding of common measurements and specifications used in this catalog.

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF BEAM PATTERNS 10°/20° “SPOT” BEAM

The spot beam pattern is used primarily as a driving light. The narrow beam creates a focal point accompanied by a “halo effect” which adds peripheral lighting. Best for high speed travel requiring distance.

40° “FLOOD” BEAM

The flood beam pattern is recommended as a driving beam at lower speeds when you need more peripheral lighting. This beam pattern is used in the FireTech Brow Light for Zone 2 lighting.

60° “SCENE” BEAM

The extra wide “scene” beam pattern is typically used for area lighting and for slow-speed applications. Please note that 60°/90° beam is not listed on each product page, but is available in most products.

TERMS FOR MEASURING LIGHT OUTPUT LUMENS

Lumens measure the overall output of a light source. Raw Lumens account for the rated output of the LED from the source. By contrast, the Effective Lumens rating accounts for thermal, optical, and electrical losses which reduce total output.

LUX

Lux measures the amount of light per square meter. Unlike lumens which measures light at the source, lux is measured at a specific distance. This helps better determine whether those effective lumens are lighting up the environment with the necessary light.

EMC

US Department of Transportation certified for on road use. UL Certification is recognized around the world as a way to ensure standards. The APEX 95 certification is given to electronic equipment that is resistant to flame and explosion.

Products which are in compliance with the Australian Design Rules (ADR). CE is a mandatory conformity mark for products in the European Economic Area. EMC and EMI certifies that a product does not interfere with other electrical products. This includes CISPR 25 Certifications.

INTENSE PRODUCT TESTING CONSUMPTION

All products are put on a digital power meter to test that they are operating correctly, checking for any electrical faults.

EMI

Products are tested in a sealed chamber to ensure that they don’t introduce RF noise into electronics/radios.

SUBMERSION / AGING

Once products are assembled every product is run through a submersion (water dunk test), then placed onto an aging rack and powered up for 30 minutes to ensure proper operation.

THERMAL IMPACT RAPID TEMPERATURE CHANGE

Products are alternated between a -40°C chamber and an 80°C chamber for 30 minutes. Products are then run for 72 hours to ensure full operational status.

PHOTOMETRIC ISOLUX BEAM PATTERN

Lights are tested in the Goniophotometer to model the beam pattern and depict the overall light output. This is now reuired by NFPA 1901 and the results are avaliable upon request.

HIGH TEMPERATURE & HIGH HUMIDITY OPERATIONAL

Products are placed in a 60°C, 94% humidity chamber and left operational for 72 hours. Afterwards, products are inspected for moisture, water drops, damaged LEDs, flickering LEDs, and more.

INGRESS HIGH PRESSURE IP69K

Products are sprayed from close distances with 80~100 BAR water pressure to verify the Ingress Protection rating, ensuring they are sealed properly.

VIBRATION 15.6 G RMS RATING

Products are placed on the vibration shock table with a vibration range of 25.6G for 4 hours to test that they can withstand the rated vibration standard. Products tested at 60 G rms are performed off-site.

LONG TERM DURABILITY

Products are then switched on and off 20,000 times repeatedly to ensure that they remain functional. 6

FireTech products are engineered for the highest possible luminous efficacy - the ratio of lumens per watt.

PROUD INDUSTRY PARTNERS

When enabled, Pulse Width Modulation integrated circuitry flashes the LED faster than the human eye can see for reduced heat, prolonged LED life and dimming capabilities.

Integrated Electronic Thermal Management automatically regulates heat levels by engaging special programs in the PWM circuitry to prolong each LEDs lifespan to 50,000+ hours.

DIMMING CAPABILITY

Prime Drive includes dimming capability. Dimming works by engaging PWM to reduce power while maintaining steady output. HiViz LED Lighting offers push button and dial dimmer units.

THE NEW NFPA RULES FOR LIGHTING

In 2016 the NFPA 1901 standard moved to define how “Lumens” were to be measured. In the most simple terms, this change requires manufacturers to test fully assembled fixtures in a light tunnel before taking actual measurements AFTER the fixture has been “burned in” to its maximum operating temperature. It also requires device manufacturers to make the results of their test available upon request.

Every second counts when responding to an Airport Rescue Firefighting incident; and lets face it, there’s never a hydrant conveniently located next to a downed aircraft. The average ARFF truck holds between 2,000 and 3,000 gallons of water, and is capable of dumping that water in less than 2 minutes. We’d be willing to bet you have never heard the term “Ready. FIRE!, Aim.” The order in which we do things DOES make difference. So why do we say it that way? In the time it takes to properly aim and align the remote controlled turret nozzle while modulating, ARFF operators can waste up to 10% of their available water supply. With the FireTech Light Canon, you can aim the turret, THEN turn the water on, minimizing waste and putting more water from your tank on the target.
