be aware | CHILD SAFETY TIPS
Be safe this holiday
Almost 1500 children go missing every year in South Africa, especially over during the December holidays. Here’s how to keep your child safe from harm…
Be alert
Travelling by taxi
Know where your children are at all times. Make sure they ask for your permission before leaving the house. Know where they’re going, with whom and give them a time by which they need to be home.
Wherever possible, have a trusted adult with your child in a taxi. If they must travel alone, tell them not to get into a taxi if they suspect that the driver or passengers have been drinking or if they feel uncomfortable.
Not just strangers Many children are abducted or harmed by people they know. Make sure you know who your children’s friends are; their first and last names, where they live and who their parents are.
Contact details Help your children to learn important information in case they get lost – your house address, your work telephone number and your cell phone number. If they’re too small to remember, write it all down on a card for them.
Safety at the beach Many children go missing on Durban’s beaches every year. To avoid this, always make sure that: Þ They only swim where the lifeguards are and stay in shallow water Þ They know where the lifeguards’ station is in case they need help Þ They are supervised at all times.
