oung artists across New England have interpreted this year’s National NAIDOC theme, ‘We all Stand on Sacred Ground: Learn, Respect and Celebrate’ as part of the 2015 Fair Trading NAIDOC Armidale Art Competition. NSW Fair Trading Assistant Commissioner Andrew Gavrielatos today presented prizes to the winner and commended the efforts of all the students involved. “Fair Trading has been hosting this competition since 2008 and each year I come away impressed by the creative flair exhibited by New England’s school communities,” Mr Gavrielatos said. the Armidale Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Keeping Place and the Armidale Dumaresq Council, held to coincide with the Armidale Aboriginal communities ‘A Day in the Dale’ NAIDOC Week celebration. The ‘Outstanding Participation by a School’ prize, a perpetual trophy introduced this year, was awarded to Gilgai Public School. The one hundred and seventy three art works entered shared a prize pool of $2,000. “This NAIDOC Art Competition celebrates Aboriginal history and culture and encourages understanding and awareness in school children,” Mr Gavrielatos said.

“This year I am pleased to announce the Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Keeping Place have offered to exhibit winning entries from Thursday 24 September to Saturday 21 November 2015.” NSW Fair Trading engages with Aboriginal communities through dedicated Aboriginal officers who promote and conduct programs under Fair Trading’s Aboriginal Action Plan. These programs are in line with Fair Trading’s Supporting Local Communities strategy and address the priorities set out under the 2014-2016 National Indigenous Consumer Strategy Action Plan, ‘taking action, gaining trust’.
