ALS calls for Justice Targets be incorporated into Closing the Gap

T

he Federal Government today delivered it’s 6th Closing the Gap statement reviewing Aboriginal disadvantage against measurable targets including health and education, but failed to announce the inclusion of Justice Targets to tackle the mass imprisonment of Aboriginal adults and young people in Australia.

The Prime Minister Tony Abbott today said we’re on track to meet some of the targets, but not others. Phil Naden, CEO of Aboriginal Legal Service (NSW/ACT) says many of the current targets will be hard to achieve until we include Justice Targets in Closing the Gap. “We were very surprised to hear there was no bipartisan commitment today towards incorporating Justice Targets into the Government’s Closing the Gap

strategy,” said Mr Naden. “This is despite the fact that in 2013, prior to the Federal election, both sides of government expressed a commitment to incorporating Justice Targets into Closing the Gap. “Today, Australia’s national shame is the mass imprisonment of Aboriginal people, particularly young people. Australia’s Aboriginal children are detained at the world’s highest rates.
