Cathy Freeman Foundation end of term celebrations
by Sanna Conquest 2 October 2015
A
round 1600 students from four remote communities across Australia celebrated the end of Term 3 with the presentation of more than 500 Cathy Freeman Foundation Starting Block Awards (CFF). The communities of Palm Island and Woorabinda in Queensland, Galiwin’ku and Wurrumiyanga in the Northern Territory each held CFF Starting Block award ceremonies acknowledging the academic success of their students in the areas of school attendance, improvement in literacy and outstanding classroom behavior. More than 200 family and community members celebrated 126 Starting Block Awards at
Murrupurtiyanuwu Catholic Primary School (MCPS) in Wurrumiyanga, the biggest awards ceremony yet. School Principal of MCPS, Daniel Graves, opened the ceremony by thanking all the family members for their support in ensuring school attendance was 22% higher than the previous school term. “It’s powerful to see the collaboration between school, community and the Cathy Freeman Foundation making a difference,” said CFF’s newly appointed CEO, Jamie Howden. In Term 3, 16 Year 7 and Year 8 students enjoyed a well-earned trip to Canberra on the Horizons Program. The Canberra Horizons team enjoyed going to Birrigai and learning about the Ngunnawal
country, followed by a tour of Reconciliation Place where the group was proud to find a tribute to Cathy Freeman. Other highlights included visiting Parliament House, Questacon and the Ngunnawal Centre at the University of Canberra. Also in Term 3, Sydney welcomed 14 Year 11 and 12 students from our four partner communities for the second Sydney Horizons trip for 2015. Highlights from the Sydney trip included an Amazing Race Scavenger Hunt at The National Centre of Indigenous Excellence, a wonderful Bangaboui Sydney Harbour Cultural Tour, meeting the iconic Bondi Lifeguards and a performance by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellowes. The Horizons trips have been

successful in uniting hardworking students and giving them an educational and cultural experience that focuses on exploring post school pathways, building confidence and skills in goal setting, and meeting Indigenous role models. “For some students these trips are the first time they have ventured from their community and for many it is their first time to a major capital city. The camps therefore provide a life-changing opportunity to broaden their horizons and enrich their knowledge, understanding and experience of themselves, stated Jamie.
