ourteen people from the Torres Strait and the Northern Peninsular are well on their way to becoming business leaders in their communities. They have all just graduated with a Joint Diploma of Business and Management at Tropical North Queensland TAFE (TNQT). For 12 months course participants like father and daughter Michael and Jasmine Bond from New Mapoon have been studying to improve their business and management skills, so they can assist their own people to become

more efficient at managing community businesses. TNQT finance teacher Jennie Arnold said all fourteen participants had benefited from the course and were ready to apply their enhanced managerial skills for their community’s benefit with many hoping to do advanced diploma studies. “Diploma graduate Michael Bond is manager of the CDEP Program in New Mapoon. He will be using his training to manage upcoming projects and budget to increase staffing in these projects,” Ms Arnold said. “Meanwhile his daughter

Jasmine, who is the finance manager of their local women’s organisation Nai-beguta Agama Aboriginal Corporation, now is knowledgeable in designing operational plans and embedding sustainable practices into the day-to-day operations of her organisation.” The graduates are returning to their communities on Friday, proud of their achievements and ready to recommend the Diploma studies to others.
