Embracing NAIDOC at Harristown State School
by Daniel Ashton 5 November 2015
T
he students at Harristown State School have put on a display of Indigenous culture and created a mural that serves to welcome those who visit Harristown State School. Throughout July a group of students aged from six to eleven proudly performed for the school and community. The celebration was embraced by the whole school, with over 250 students entering the

NAIDOC week art competition. The twenty-five Indigenous students then joined one of Toowoomba’s finest Indigenous artists (Darryl McCarthy) in creating a mural to recognise that we walk together, with nature on sacred ground. At the centre of the piece, Multugra is depicted standing courageously upon Tabletop Mountain. The silhouettes standing at the bottom represent the twenty-five students and three adults that helped to create
the artwork. The names of these students can be located within the artwork. This experience has given our Indigenous community and students an opportunity to share their heritage. It is inspiring to see the next generation to work together in creating such beautiful art and in turn gain an appreciation for the land. The work is now able to be viewed upon arrival to Harristown State School.
