SW Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe (pictured) wished all teams in this weekend’s New South Wales Aboriginal Rugby League Knockout the best of luck and congratulates the organisers for the strong number of teams entered into this year’s event. “NSW Fair Trading has been an active participant in the knockout for the past 14 years and is the proud sponsor of the Players of the Series Perpetual Trophy for both the men and women’s teams,” Mr Stowe said. “I wish all teams the very best of luck and I hope the wider indigenous community thoroughly enjoys this event-filled long weekend competition that has become an annual highlight of the community calendar.” The Knockout involves teams representing communities and families from all over the state of NSW. The competition began in 1971 with just six teams participating. Today the Knockout is the biggest annual gathering of Aboriginal people in NSW, attracting up to 90 rugby league teams of men, women and young people and over 15,000 spectators. “Throughout the history of the Knockout, one thing has remained strong,” said Mr Stowe. “This event is run by the community for the community, instilling the notion of strength in self determination and community leadership. “The Knockout is a great opportunity for gathering,

celebrating and reuniting with family and friends from all over the state.” Last year’s champions, the Newcastle Yowies, will be hosting this weekend’s competitions at the Lakeside Oval in Raymond Terrace. Followed by today’s official opening and a friendly match between the Under 11’s Newcastle Yowies and the Redfern All Blacks, the women and youth matches will begin immediately, with the men’s matches beginning tomorrow. All finals will be played on

Monday 7 October 2013. Community services at the Knockout include a kiddies tent, two elders tents, a health check tent, an ambassador training clinic for children and more than 25 information stalls & services.
