avid Kempton, Member for Cook, has welcomed funding for two key organisations in Cape York to help shine the spotlight on domestic violence prevention. The Weipa Community Care Association (WCCA) and NPA Family and Community Services Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation (NPA) are set to host awareness-raising activities during Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month in May, thanks to the funding from the State Government. Mr Kempton said the WCCA would receive $3000 to run the

String Women’s Circle project, with a further $2,750 awarded to NPA to run Promoting Family Harmony. “The Government is partnering with organisations such as WCCA and NPA to raise awareness of domestic and family violence and to help people take action before it’s too late,” Mr Kempton said. He said the funding would go a long way towards domestic and family violence prevention in the area. “WCCA will team up with Western Cape College to host a series of workshops for women in Mapoon, Napranum and Weipa to increase community awareness of non-physical abuse in domestic, family and elder violence. “NPA on the other hand will focus on the issue of domestic and

family violence in the community as a whole.” Mr Kempton said Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month was held each May. “Domestic and family violence is a serious issue that affects many families and individuals of all ages, cultural background, sexuality and socio-economic status throughout the Cook electorate,” he said. “That’s why I am encouraging the community to come together, support these events and take action to show domestic and family violence is never acceptable.” Victims, family or friends of people experiencing abuse should call DVConnect on 1800 811 811 (24 hours, 7 days a week) to help prevent domestic and family violence escalating.
