New job initiatives create employment supplied by Min Scullion’s office 4 June 2014

welve Indigenous job seekers will be provided with employment opportunities through a new pharmacy training project in South Australia, while ten Indigenous people will be provided with a new traineeship and apprenticeship project in Sydney and parts of regional NSW. Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, announced that Trainway Pty Ltd would receive $182,480 for the South Australian project and Sydney Training and Employment (STE) would receive $71,400 for the NSW project through the Australian Government’s Indigenous Employment Programme (IEP). “The Australian Government is committed to ensuring as many Indigenous people as possible are working in real jobs,” Minister Scullion said. “The IEP funds projects which encourage employers to provide sustainable employment opportunities and which drive practical Indigenous businesses and economic opportunities in urban, regional and remote areas.” Minister Scullion said Trainway Pty Ltd would place 12 Indigenous job seekers into employment in pharmacies allied with the Pharmacy Guild of Australia as dispensary assistants. “Pre-employment training has been developed in partnership with the Pharmacy Guild of Australia and Service Skills SA,” Minister Scullion said. “The training will provide

these job seekers with the skills and knowledge to assist in the selection, processing and labelling of prescription medicines. “Employment is guaranteed through a number of pharmacies within the Adelaide metropolitan region. “Fourteen Indigenous job seekers have commenced the preemployment component of the project, of whom twelve will enter into a 52 week pharmaceutical traineeship. “In addition to providing employment opportunities for Indigenous people, this project will foster a stronger relationship between pharmacies and Aboriginal Health Services to facilitate more effective interaction within Aboriginal communities. “Over time, this can help improve medication compliance and health outcomes.” “The IEP supports a broad range of activities that meet the needs of
employers, Indigenous Australians and their communities.” Minister Scullion said STE would place 10 Indigenous Australians into employment with host employers across Sydney and regional NSW including Wollongong and Newcastle. “Participants will be placed into traineeships and apprenticeships in metal trades, business, horticulture and financial sectors,” Minister Scullion said. “All participants will undertake a Certificate III or above in their relevant field. “STE is an established Group Training Company and will utilise its experience, existing networks and field staff to support and mentor participants through their employment and training.” Participants will be supported by STE and host employers to ensure retention in the workplace and a culturally appropriate working environment.
