NQ after hours health services forums
by Gavin Broomhead 6 October 2015
N
orthern Queensland PHN (Primary Health Network) this week launched a series of innovative after hours health services forums to engage with health service providers and the community. The forums enable NQPHN to work together with local health providers and consumers to improve after hours services across North Queensland. NQPHN will engage with GPs and also a wide range of primary care providers including Aboriginal medical services, hospitals,
pharmacies, dental and allied health practices, and mental health and palliative care. The forums began in Mackay on Wednesday (30 September) and Moranbah yesterday (1 October), and also take in Townsville, Charters Towers, the Tablelands and Cairns over the coming weeks. Forums are also being planned for Cape York and Torres Strait communities. Chief Executive Officer Robin Moore said NQPHN had funding for after hours services, and collaboration was the key to ensuring the most effective and efficient way to utilise these funds. “These forums will enable us to
work with health service providers to determine community needs and priorities for after hours health services across North Queensland,” said Mr Moore. “We are holding two sessions in each region – one in the city and one in a rural town – over the next few weeks, but will be seeking wider input as part of our ongoing listening tours. “We will be supplementing the after hours health services forums with other opportunities for GP practices to participate, including the GP After Hours Rapid Review survey, currently being conducted by our Practice Support team. “We are really keen to get the

views of as many health service providers and consumers as possible, and are also inviting written submissions from anyone who can’t make it to a consultation event. “We’re eager to engage closely with our stakeholders, and explore how we can work together to ‘make health better’ for all North Queenslanders, particularly those who are in most need. The forums will enable health service providers to provide feedback to and work with NQPHN on: • improving the system of after hours care – through better planning and better integration, leading to better value for the taxpayer and better patient outcomes • innovate to get better access and more capable services for vulnerable communities – especially Residential Aged Care Facilities residents, rural and remote, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, those with mental illness and people needing palliation • find local solutions that will work for local problems • build self-sustaining capacity close to where people live. “We will work together to come up with innovative solutions for after hours health services in this region,” said Mr Moore. “More precisely, we will collaborate on a range of dimensions that will help us understand what is working well and what could be improved relating to after hours services. “By doing this, we’ll get a 360 degree picture of what we need to do from the point of view of both patients and those providing services.” Some of the after hours health services forums will also be combined with listening tour events, where health agencies are invited to find out more general
