n a world first, a group of 12 Indigenous youth are preparing to embark on an adventure of a lifetime by visiting the majestic Antarctic. The graduates from the highly respected Yalari Foundation will join famed Australian adventurer Peter Bland, the first Australian to have ventured to both the North and South Magnetic Poles. They will also join 12 handpicked leaders including Associate Professor Wayne Quilliam, one of Australia’s pre-eminent Indigenous photographers, on the ice in March 2014.

The mentoring setting will guarantee an extraordinary path for them becoming future inspirational leaders and an example for all Australians to follow. Associate Professor Quilliam said “to engage with a group of highly motived youth in a theatre synonymous with freezing winds, brutal storms and dangerous ice will be unpredictable and invigorating. “I look forward to sharing my experience and knowledge of the visual arts in particular photography that until now has encompassed extreme heat in inhospitable deserts and torrential rain in dense

rainforests throughout Australia,” he said. “This journey is an extension of the teaching and mentoring I conduct in rural, remote and urban communities. “The environment is slightly foreign but the purpose is the same: to participate, engage and evoke discussion on leadership and culture in modern society, it will be a learning experience for all,” Mr Quilliam said. The program dates include Mt Macedon in Victoria from 30 November to 3 December 2013 and Argentina and Antarctica from 28 February to 17 March 2014.
