itchell Bond won the Kenneth WatsonCuttler Memorial Award for Reconciliation on National Sorry Day last Monday. The St Joseph’s Murgon student took the school award because of his ability to get on with everyone. The prize was named after the man often given a hard time when he went to school but always forgave his tormentors. Australia’s National Sorry day has been held on May 26
since 1998 after the tabling of the Bringing Them Home report. This acknowledged the taking of Aboriginal children from their families in the 1950s and ’60s to place them in white homes. On February 13, 2008 Prime Minister Rudd apologised for the actions that inflicted “profound grief, suffering and loss”. St Joey’s marked the day this year with a special Lithurgy service and activities involving traditional Aboriginal storytelling, art, historical talks, colouring-in activities and others.
