Tamara White is a Police Officer
Who is your mob? My family are the White’s, Arrante from Alice Springs and the Harrison’s, Malak-Malak people from Daley River in the Northern Territory.
Where did you go to school? I went to a primary school in Palmerston, NT then I went to Kormilda College for Years 8-10, then I came down south with my Mum for the rest. What do you do? I’m a police officer with Queensland Police. I became an officer because my dad was a prison guard at Berrima Prison in the Northern Territory for about 20 years. You know when they ask you in Prep or Preschool what you want to be when you grow up, I said a police officer. It was either a police officer or a prison officer like my dad. What does family mean to you? It’s everything to me. We didn’t grow up with money, we just had each other. Who are you role models? My grandmother.
She’s from the Stolen Generation and when I wasn’t with my parents I spent a lot of time with her so she kind of grew me up. When I think of her I think of her smile and a rainbow. Her nickname was Rainbow. What’s the last book you read? My grandmother’s biography. Her name is Marjorie Harris. A gentleman wrote her story and the third edition came
out about a month ago. What is the last movie you saw? Bad Boys II. What do you hope for the future of our people? First and foremost I’d like the Close The Gap day to grow bigger. It’s a day where we police and our Aboriginal and Islander community get together. A lot of people don’t know about Closing the Gap.
