categories. Special guests on the night included Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch. Torres Strait Employment and Training Recognition Awards President Mark England, from awards organiser My Pathway, said the awards continue to get bigger every year, with a record number of nominees and categories in 2015. “My Pathway started these awards a few years ago because there was nothing in place to recognise the outstanding achievements in training and employment across the Torres Strait,” said Mr England. “The awards have since been a huge success, and we continue to attract more support from the region each year. “I’d like to thank the businesses and Government departments active in the region that sponsor and support the event. “We’re all very proud that the awards are now firmly fixed in the

Torres Strait annual calendar.” Ms Ketchell, a long service employee of the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service, which is one of Australia’s largest providers of health services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, was a popular winner of the My Pathway Ken O’Brien Achiever Award. “Gwen is a deserving winner of this prestigious award,” said Mr England. “She has been instrumental in developing and implementing innovative processes and leading her team of over 45 staff. “Gwen was the driving force for the implementation of new standards across the service in the food and cleaning areas. “Her management skills are exceptional and her leadership style is very effective on numerous levels of operation, including focusing on developing her staff to advance in this field. “Gwen has been recognised as

an icon of the hospital and it is for this reason she is being recognised as one of the most influential and positive Indigenous leaders within the organisation. “She is an inspiration to everyone around her, and we were thrilled to announce her as a winner.” Another popular winner on the night was George Gabey, who won a Special Recognition Award for transforming his life and fulfilling his dream of joining the Navy. The 150-strong crowd were entertained on the night by Torres Strait musical identities Seaman Dan and Kura Stephen. The Torres Strait Employment and Training Recognition Awards, which are funded through sponsorship from Torres Strait businesses and Government departments, were first held in 2011 to recognise outstanding achievements in training and employment across the region.
