T

he University of Southern Queensland (USQ) hosted hundreds of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander high school students during its annual Indigenous Connections Toowoomba event. The two-day event, which is now in its fifth year, featured motivational presentations from successful Indigenous role models; information sessions presented by USQ teaching staff; and cultural activities like traditional games, dance and art. .USQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Jan Thomas said Indigenous Connections was a great opportunity for the Years 8 to 12

students to learn the importance of higher education and experience university. “This event is designed to excite and inspire students to embrace their education so they can reach their career aspirations,” Professor Thomas said. “There will be plenty of chances to learn more about tertiary study with University Activity sessions covering a wide range of topics including humanities, business, education and engineering. “For example, students can test our Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering program with a look at robotics and automation.” Professor Thomas said in previous years the event focused on contemplation and celebration, while the 2014 event centred on

motivation and learning to succeed. “I look forward to welcoming these southern Queensland students to USQ and hope they are inspired by what they experience at the Indigenous Connections event,” she said. Event keynote speakers were Trevor Tim and Bram Collins whose Success With Attitude presentation aimed to build confidence and positive attitudes. Their program covers motivation, goal setting, team building, and physical health and wellness. Both USQ Springfield and USQ Fraser Coast will hold Indigenous Connections events later this year.
