T

he Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body represent the interests and aspirations of the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. It provides direct advice to

the ACT Government with the ambition of improving the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Canberrans. Fourteen people have nominated for the democratically elected group’s third term. This year’s candidates represent a broad cross-section of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Tjanara Goreng Goreng Assistant Professor in Indigenous Studies at the University of Canberra. Tjanara is the founder and national convenor of the Foundation for Indigenous Recovery & Development (FIRDA).

Islander community. Polling begins in Canberra on Monday 5 July and runs through to Saturday 12 July 2014. Further information on the elections and postal vote applications can be obtained through Elections ACT on (02) 6205 0033 or www.elections.act. gov.au.

Richie Allan

Has vowed to fight for improved health outcomes, housing and homelessness, employment, education and most importantly for the Elders, Children and Young people.

JO DONOVAN

Owner and operator of Bandu Catering. For the past 37 years Jo has established a leadership profile in the ACT. Darryl Miller Until August 2013 Darryl worked in the Australian Public Service. Throughout his 24 plus year career in the APS he worked Indigenous specific policy, program and service delivery roles. He is an active member of the ACT Indigenous Labour Network.

Rod Little

Current ATSIEB Chairperson. Rod has been employed with the Australian Public Service for over 17 years.

Tony McCulloch

Currently works for the ACT Government. His background is in correctional services and has experience with the Aboriginal Legal Rights Service.

Jo Chivers

Current Chairperson of the Canberra and District NAIDOC Aboriginal Corporation. Jo has been employed with the Australian Public Service for the past 21 years and currently works in child care policy.

Lynnice Letty Keen Wants her generation and those younger to be influencing the decisions that impact on the community, families, kids and future. Lynnice sees a number of priority areas requiring focus to ensure positive outcomes are being achieved for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Fred Monaghan Has been working at the Gugan Gulwan Centre for the past 15 years. Fred’s passion is connecting with young people and their families to seek a better way forward in areas such as health, education and accommodation.

Delephene Fraser Establishing a career in Aboriginal politics and has written several articles for independent on-line media outlets and for the National Indigenous Times. Delephene has a passion for Aboriginal politics.

Diane Collins

Diane works for the Department of Foreign Affairs as the Indigenous HR Adviser. She has extensive experience working within her community on various committees and voluntary roles including Indigenous Education Consultative Board, NAIDOC and Reconciliation.

Maurice Walker

Ross Fowler Ross works for the Justice and Community Safety Directorate, within the ACT Corrective Services agency. Ross combines an employment history in government sectors at all levels with experience in the community sector, and an educational background in Law.

Maurice has been a public servant for most of his professional life, working with the Department of Aboriginal Affairs, Aboriginal Hostels Limited, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) and the Department of Health and Ageing. Currently, Maurice works with the ACT Governments Community Services Directorate, Housing.

Steven Brown In 2004, Steven commenced working in the Australian Public Service, ranging in finance, project management, juvenile justice, education, and youth affairs. Steven has worked in the philanthropic sector and worked cohesively with philanthropic partners to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
