Western learning “began at 30”
by Kate Weiss 21 October 2015
A
graduate from West Arnhem Land, who received limited formal education until age 30, has achieved her quest to become a qualified teacher. Heleana Gulwa said her thirst for knowledge, along with family support, helped her complete a Bachelor of Teaching and Learning (Preservice) at Charles Darwin University, which she received at a recent graduation ceremony. “It was a challenge for me and at times I didn’t believe I could do it, but now I can say I have an education,” Ms Gulwa said.

“As an Aboriginal woman, I believe we are capable of making changes and being successful at any point in our lives.” Ms Gulwa said she gained knowledge in Indigenous lore, language and tradition along with bush survival skills while growing up. Determined to receive a formal Western education, at age 30 she completed courses in spoken and written English at the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education. “I started from the beginning,” she said. “I had traditional bush knowledge and the knowledge of
my people, but needed to learn about Western knowledge.” After completing the foundation courses, she followed in her mother’s footsteps to become a teacher, and enrolled at CDU. Ms Gulwa also completed student teacher placements at The Essington School Darwin and Manunda Terrace Primary School during her studies. “A positive attitude and family support helped me get through it,” she said. “I think that having more Indigenous teachers in our community will be beneficial for our children.”
