tudents from a Queensland Aboriginal community are turning on their ovens in support of Red Cross. The Big Cake Bake is a fundraising campaign for Australian Red Cross that encourages everyone across Australia to ‘bake the world a better place’. Funds raised go towards supporting the ongoing work that Red Cross does, including programs that support vulnerable families. Students from Woorabinda State School are joining the national fundraising cook-off and baking cakes for sale at a community day. Principal Beresford Domic said the school wanted to show its support for Red Cross and the work

they do in Woorabinda. “We (school) have developed a strong relationship with Red Cross here. They support our families and kids. So we wanted to thank them and give them support back.” “Red Cross staff are local, so our families feel comfortable talking to them and that makes a big difference in understanding the needs of students and families.” Red Cross has ten staff in Worrabinda, eight are local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents. Red Cross provides a range of programs in the community with a focus on supporting families and young people. Manager of Partnerships Program, Sharon Kinchela says Red Cross supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents and

families to care for their young people and children in ways that strengthen family relationships. “We also support at-risk students to either re-engage with their schooling or further their education.” “We want our children in Woorabinda to reach their full potential. So we look at ways to improving work opportunities for young people, like through youth mentorship utilising music programs that help build skills and increase health and wellbeing.” “It’s really nice that the school recognises the support we provide and want to give back.” For more information email bigcakebake@redcross.org.au, call 1800 652 635 or join the Big Cake Bake online community at facebook.com/BigCakeBake.
