Welcome to First Fortnight 2016 For those unfamiliar with First Fortnight, we are a volunteer-run charity that aims to challenge mental health stigma through music, theatre, film, dance, spoken word and more. We believe the arts provide a space where people can talk about mental health issues in a non-scripted manner. Once that conversation has begun, we hope this will then help to change people’s perceptions about an issue that affects us all. One in four of us will experience a mental health problem at some point in our lives. With that in mind, we hope to make the First Fortnight of each year synonymous with mental health awareness, challenging prejudice and ending stigma.
Founded in 2009, First Fortnight is also a mental health service provider and runs the First Fortnight Centre for Creative Therapies. The centre currently employs two creative arts therapists providing art psychotherapy for individuals experiencing homelessness and mental ill-health in Dublin. The First Fortnight Festival 2016 begins with Proclamation, an event in Christ Church Cathedral where we invite some of Ireland’s best-known faces to proclaim their vision of how to improve our collective mental wellbeing as Ireland marks its past by looking to the future. We hope you enjoy the 2016 programme and that we see you throughout January.
THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS First Fortnight is entirely volunteer-run with a large group of people coming together each January to dedicate their spare time to making this festival happen. Without them, this two-week festival would not be possible. We’d like to take this opportunity to give them a huge ‘Thank You!’ So if you see our volunteers in January, be sure to
give them a huge pat on the back. They are immense. If you would like to volunteer and be a part of First Fortnight 2016, we’d love to hear from you. We need people from all backgrounds with different skills and experience, so please get in touch. Visit www.firstfortnight.ie/volunteer for more info. @firstfortnight

The central conceit, drawn from a film piece by Bolster called self erosion, examines the shared lives and experiences of two artists who were former partners and assesses their collective motivation for being cultural producers, as well as their mutual history of depression. There is a contrast between text works by Bolster in confessional
simplistic meaning and the austerity of seemingly impenetrable industrial minimalism in Doyle’s mass-produced forms. This exhibition is in collaboration with The LAB Gallery and will be accompanied by an essay by Sara Reisman, Artistic Director of the Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation. A series of workshops for artists supporting professional development and mental health will be staged, looking at time management as a freelance creative as well as self promotion and rejection.

Gabriel Rory Culkin stars in Gabriel, a heartfelt portrait of a vulnerable teen at his psychological breaking point, struggling to keep it together in the wake of his father’s suicide. Convinced that reuniting with an ex-girlfriend holds the answers to his troubles, Gabriel risks everything in a desperate pursuit that will take him to uncharted places and test the limits of those closest to him. Infused with authenticity, Gabriel establishes firsttime writer/director Lou Howe as a new filmmaking voice to be reckoned with.
**** “Macaulay’s younger brother gives a terrific performance as a 25-year-old struggling with mental health issues in this low-budget gem” – Jordan Hoffman, The Guardian “Rory Culkin is a huge revelation. I wouldn’t be surprised if this performance turns him into the next big thing.” - Matt Barone, COMPLEX “This is the kind of breakthrough role that young actors are rarely afforded, and the kind of performance that they can rarely pull off.” - The Playlist “Magnetically charged and full of suspense for nearly every moment.” - The Awards Circuit

Love & Mercy Love & Mercy presents an unconventional portrait of Brian Wilson, the mercurial singer, songwriter and leader of the Beach Boys. Set against the era-defining catalogue of Wilson’s music, the film intimately examines the personal voyage and salvation of the icon whose success came at extraordinary personal cost. Starring Paul Dano, John Cusack and Elizabeth Banks, Love & Mercy examines two key periods in Wilson’s life. In the 1960s, as the Beach Boys’ leader, Wilson struggles with emerging
psychosis as he attempts to craft his avant-garde pop masterpiece, Pet Sounds. In the 1980s, he is a broken, confused man under the 24-hour watch of shady therapist Dr. Eugene Landy. Not to be missed. **** - The Irish Times **** - Irish Independent **** “A heartfelt and eloquent tribute to one of pop’s greatest innovators” – The Guardian

Big Bobby. Little Bobby. Big Bobby. Little Bobby. is a twisted tender comedy that tells the story of Bobby. After a lifetime of sharing a bed with Mammy, Bobby is finally taking charge and moving out. But saying goodbye isn’t easy, especially with all those voices rattling around Bobby’s head.
This one-woman show from Brazen Tales Productions is a deliciously dark tale about dysfunction, co-dependency and dealing with your dark side. Written by Camille Lucy Ross & Kelly Shatter.
Now alone in Granny’s old house, Bobby’s working on keeping her demons sweet, minding her inner baba and trying to deal with Mammy. Bobby knows that ignoring the voices won’t make them go away, but she can’t figure out whether she needs to kill baba or give it some sugary tea.
There will be a post-show discussion following the opening performance on January 6.

Overshadowed Imogene used to be sparkly, vivacious and outgoing. She used to fancy lads, have curves and love chips. Recently, however, she has become withdrawn, gaunt, obsessed with exercise. The reason? Caol, her new “best friend”, who’s cast a dark shadow over Imogene’s life. Invisible to everyone except Imogene, Caol will not rest until Imogene has been reduced both emotionally and physically to a shadow of her former self. This moving and insightful piece by award-winning company Sunday’s Child (My Name
Is Saoirse) aims to provoke compassion and debate around the subject of eating disorders. Winner of the 2015 Fishamble Award for Best New Writing. **** “A dark, compassionate, sometimes funny exploration of eating disorders” - Irish Times “Overshadowed will speak to anyone who has lived with an eating or anxiety disorder but in truth it’s a play that all of us should see – a sensitive, emotional and even funny look at an issue that affects so many.” - meg.ie

Meet Willie Thorne During snooker’s heyday in the 1980s, Willie Thorne was one of the game’s best known and well-liked players. He won 14 major titles and made a record 190 maximum 147 breaks, earning himself the nickname ‘Mr Maximum’. But behind the happygo-lucky smile lurked a dark secret. Willie was a gambling addict and by the end of his career he’d blown £1.5 million to the bookmakers and casinos of Britain. As the money from snooker dried up, his destructive

addiction showed no sign of abating and his life spiralled out of control. Desperation and depression took hold of him, culminating in a suicide attempt when he came close to ending it all. We’ve invited representatives from all political parties to take part in a public debate chaired by broadcaster and historian John Bowman. Mental health is as important as physical health and it’s up to us, the general public, to ensure it gets put on the political agenda in 2016.
Everyone in Ireland is likely to be affected by mental health difficulties at some point. With an election in 2016, it’s time to start asking questions about mental health: Where do the political parties stand? What are their priorities?
