Though PSBs are losing the profitability indexes year by year, it’s achieving their foremost aim of Social re sponsibility of expanding banking ruraly. For this, it stands for around 20.6% share in the rural PSB ATMs which is 2X the private sec tor banks with 8.5%. Not only this, PSBs are leading into the rural lending space with a 65% share as against the mere 16% share of pri vateOnbanks.otherhand, people still have a soft corner for PSBs and this was proved during the Covid-19 crisis and other geopolitical risks which threatened global financial security. When the pandemic was at its worst, PSBs saw an influx of Rs 58, 697 crores whereas Private Sector re ported inflows of only Rs 33,878 crores. And this de pendency of the Public over PSBs clearly can’t persuade RBI to privatize them.

Leaders like Lal Bahadur Shastri and Nitish Kumar resigned as railways minis ter following train accidents. Mamata Banerjee and Suresh Prabhu offered to quit but were dissuaded by the respective prime minis ters of those times. When it comes to states and health services the accounta bility factor is glaringly miss ing, especially in Madhya Pradesh where healthcare al ways reaches hapless patients late or is denied. In July this year there were some shocking incidents of apathy. On July 11 an eight-year-old child sat holding his brother’s body out side the Morena district hospi tal while his father looked for an ambulance. An inquiry was ordered but what was found is not known. On July 23 a wom an and one of the twins she was carrying died due to delay in being taken to hospital. Sim ilar incidents have been re ported from other states as well. Such tragic incidents re quire immediate and tough ac tions and a compassionate at titude towards the poor.

THE HISTORIC POLICY OF 1991 UNVEILED t was the year 1991 that coined up the word ‘Privatisation’ for the Indian Economy. Until then, each sector from Insur ance, Agriculture, Hospitali ty, and Banking was under the rigid state norms. But the economic crisis left no option for the Government to open the Indian Market from its closed regulations. And then India pivoted to Liberalisa tion, Privatisation, and Glo balisation which changed the fate of the Indian Economy for the good.
In an example of how accountability should be exercised, Portugal’s Health Minister Marta Temido resigned following the death of a pregnant Indian tourist while being transferred from one hospital to another. The avoidable tragedy was caused by the minister’s order for temporary closure of obstetricemergencyservices

PERESTROIKA AND GLASNOST, THE WORDS GORBACHEV GAVE TO THE WORLD ikhail Gorbachev, the epoch-making Presi dent of the erstwhile Soviet Union is no more. Responsible for the dismantling of the “Iron Cur tain” which was the political boundary between Eastern and Western Europe during the Cold War era and making words like glasnost and perestroika popular in the mid-Eighties, Gorbachev had a huge impact on global poli tics. Both the words changed the face of the USSR which later ceased to be a Union of Soviet Socialist Republic as state after state gained independent status. President Vladimir Putin called it the “greatest catastrophe”. Al most at the same time countries like Hungary, Czechoslovakia, East Germany and others broke free of the Communist yoke. With Crimea’s annexation in 2014, the Ukraine war and Rus sia’s attempts to expand its influ ence in Europe indicate that Putin is trying to undo what Gorbachev did. Glasnost and perestroika are no longer reflected in today’s Rus sia. Putin has moved away from reforms introduced by Gorbachev and is being increasingly seen as a repressive leader.
..BUT CRITICISM OVER CONTINUESPRIVATISATIONTO THIS DAY Out of the three norms, Pri vatisation received much criticism and it’s still getting debated over related to few industries and Banking is the foremost of all. Banking is the backbone of the econo my which needs to be duly regulated but privatization of the banking industry gave birth to monopoly, unhealthy competition, strategic loop holes, and vague policies. All of these drawbacks stabbed the Indian Economy with re peated financial blunders such as ‘The Harshad Mehta Scam’ that took advantage of the tweaked policies for their ownOwninggood. to all such obvious episodes from the past and even the current banking mishaps, the debate of ‘Pub lic Vs Private’ in the Banking industry is still alive, and let’s uncover where it’s likely to be headed THE PUBLIC VS. PRIVATE BANK DEBATE It was the former NITI Aayog Chief Arvind Panagariya who reignited the debate recently. In his argument, he proposed privatizing all the Public Sec tor Banks (PSBs) except for the State Bank of India (SBI). His approach to proposing this ide ology was based on the differ ing numbers between banks belonging to both sectors.

All of these numbers speak for themselves as to why is Privatisation appealed for Public Sector Banks. But for a developing country like In dia, where the ground reality strikes an absolute contrast with the soaring high num bers, it’s not practical to con clude on a sole basis. While PSBs might be seeming los ing their ends, RBI still has rock-solid reasons to deceler ate the pace of privatization and promote PSBs as it makes difference.

RBI still believes in the potential of the Public sector and hence wants to decelerate its privatization process as against the Niti Aayog Chief’s appeal. In its paper titled Privatisation of Public Sector Banks: An Alternate Perspective, RBI has clearl y mentioned how PSBs are significantly better and more important when it comes to en hancing national financial inclu sion. However development is also crucial for the economy as a whole to prosper and for that privatisation is the better option. We are thus at the crossroads with no simple yes or no answer to this ‘Public Vs Private’ debate with both the options seeming equally vital and reasonable from future aspects.
The economist favored pri vatization as it has floated many sunken ships in the past and recorded high num bers after conversion. For instance, one of the oldest Public Sector Banking play ers SBI had a Market Capi talisation worth 4,75,101 crore while it’s a much younger competitor but a Pri vate player HDFC commands an almost double market capitalization at Rs. 8,40,185 crores. This gives the Private sector an edge over the Pub lic sector and makes it ap pealing but why?

As much as 95% of the apartments registered were also purchased in August, and 85% proper ties were residential, while 9% were commer cial, the report said. It also pointed out that the share of proper ties in the price band of Rs1-2.5 crore rose from 42% in July to 45% in August, and the share of properties in price band of Rs2.5-5 crore rose from 10% in July to 11% in ShishirAugust.Baijal, Chair man & Managing Direc tor, Knight Frank India said, “August has his torically been a slower month, recording a month-on-month de cline in eight out of the last 10 years. De spite that, Mumbai’s home sales momentum has remained compara tively buoyant and re corded a 20% growth over same period last year. Usually, the more impor tant an endeavour, the more time one spends on it. “To whom am I most at tentive or enjoy convers ing with – my partner, or someone else? One can ask oneself, “If my partner told me to limit my contact with an associate, how will I react or feel? Has my partner lost the qualities I liked in him/her, or have I become blind to them?” A woman married for twenty years said, “Many people go into marriage right from the start.” Would one decorate an apartment if one knew that any day one might be that keeps a marriage steady. In most relationships, positive behaviour is re ciprocated. Unselfish acts indicate a desire to pre serve one’s marriage. This gives a sense of perma nence to the relationship. One wife said, “When I am angry with my husband, I’m not worried about our marriage coming to an end. ASHISH TIWARI cityfirst@firstindia.co.in anpati festival is huge in Mumbai. This year Ganesh Chaturthi was celebrated on August 31 and the city was ready to celebrate it in a big way after two-and-a-half years of Covid-related restric tions. The spirits were high, and celeb rities too had made their plans. City First brings to you how celebrities celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi.
I patiently wait for this auspicious occasion every year. Ganesh Chaturthi is very close to my heart. When we have Ganapati Bappa in our hearts, there is nothing to worry about in life. May Lord Ganesha keep enlightening our lives and always bless us with love and success. Happy Ganesh Chaturthi.
Growing up and till date, I have always looked forward to Ganesh Chaturthi. Welcoming Bappa with so much love and relishing delicious modaks has to be my favourite thing. On that note, Wishing a beautiful, colourful and cheerful Ganesh Chaturthi to everyone. May this festive occasion bring along many more smiles and many more celebrations for you.
Ganpati festival has already started and we can see the buzz all around. Everyone is preparing to take Bappa home after two years of lockdown. I celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi each and every year because I was working that time with a news channel till a few months back. My prayer to Lord Ganesha is to take away all the problems from this world. It is because of Bappa’s blessings that I’m doing my best in everything. There is a big role of Bappa in my life. The day I came to Mumbai I took blessings from Bappa at Siddhivinayak and that made my life.

MITAALI NAG Every year Bappa comes to our house for five days. Ganesh Utsav is celebrated in a much bigger way than even Diwali at our house. I am certainly happy to finally be able to celebrate the festival with no restrictions. In the last two years, we had scaled down the celebration, with regards to the guest list and all. But this year it will be like old times. Bappa, especially in the form of Shri Siddhivinayak, has been very generous and kind to me. He has always granted my wishes and given me more than I have asked for.
ASHA NEGI Every year, I eagerly await Pandal darshan and modaks. I hold Ganesh Chaturthi in the highest regard. And ever since I was a little girl, I have always looked forward to it. We keep Ganpati for one day, make his fav food and donate it to poor people. We will visit pandals for darshan this year. It’s gonna be fun to see the real Ganpati vibe after two years. I have to be careful. I think we have already been immune for the past two years, but prevention is better than cure. I know the deep spiritual meaning of Bappa. The duo not only served some blush-worthy chemis try but also provided a year's worth of gossip. Were they-were they not in a relationship rumour caused heavy specula tions on their personal lives with fans finding links and hidden clues to see whether the duo are together or not. A love story that began on the Koffee couch developed so quickly into so much more. Right from their mushy photos, to make a movie together to all the rumours that grabbed headlines and the eventual breakup, it was almost like a well-written book adapted into a crappy Netflix film. Now, a year after they alleg edly broke up Kartik and Sara, of them have spoken up about their brief ro mance. While Sara openly accept ed that she dated Kartik on Koffee With Karan and even targeted some well-worded taunts at him, Kartik had chosen to keep his mum on the issue. But he too now has spoken up about it. During an interview, Kartik was asked about his reaction to Sara’s comments on their re lationship. While not being too forward about it, Kartik vaguely answered by saying that he has been single, that’s all he knows. The actor said, “Mai pichle savah saal se sin gle hoon, baaki mujhe kuch nahi pata (I have been single for the past 1.25 years, the rest I don’t know). I have been single for the past 1 year. I am not reducing the time period slowly...it just was not precise.” Kartik further clarified that his work is not his relationship and that’s about it. He said, “Aisa nahi hai, lekin I am single. That’s about it.” Kartik Aaryan has never opened up about his relationships and chooses to keep his mum when it comes to his personal life. Although he has always been linked to his female co-stars, his rela tionship with Sara is the only one that received so much attention.
