ontroversy over freebies seems to have hit free ration supply to the poor in some states. The Uttar Pradesh government has already decided to do away with free distribution of wheat and rice under the National Food Security Act. Free ration distribution under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojna (PMGKY) will, however, continue. The UP government’s decision will affect about 15 crore ration/ Antyodaya card holders. The card holder will now be required to pay Rs 2 per kg of wheat and rice at Rs 3 per kg. The continued free ration under the PMGKY is expected to soften the blow from discontinuation by UP.

IN-DEPTH THE FUTURE OF VICE KAMALAPRESIDENTHARRIS IN AMERICAN POLITICS arly in 2022, the BBC’ North America reporter Anthony Zurcher published an important story: “Kamala Harris one year: Where did it go wrong for her?” In a well-crafted story, Zurcher argued that a tough portfolio— tackling undocumented migration and national voting reform enacting—made her an easy target as vice president. Yet this canny BBC reporter observed how Harris began her presidential campaign with a bang in January 2019 only to crash spectacularly. She failed to debate or interview well, her staff left and, for all the money she raised, Harris was unable to craft a clear message or harness a constituency. If the left-leaning BBC has been critical of Harris, so has the right-leaning The Economist. As early as May 29, 2021, it argued that she was “a gift to the Republicans.” This year, on June 23, the 1843-vintage British paper argued that Democrats should not opt for either President Biden or Harris as their presidential candidate in 2024.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman taking umbrage at a district magistrate for not ensuring display of PM’s photo at PDS shops which distribute free ration under the PMGKY says it all. UP will follow the same line of action and keep people informed about the PM being the benefactor in the PMGKY. Also, the free ration scheme which UP has stopped was started during the Covid pandemic when survival was difficult for the poor. Its continuation the exchequer could ill afford.

In 1885, the Coopers Hill Training College was established in the UK, and this is where the Indian Foresters were trained for the next two decades. From 1905 to 1913, the training was held at Oxford, and then moved to Cambridge and Edinburgh till the IFS college was established in Dehradun. In 1911 AM Caccia was appointed as the Director of Indian Forest Studies ‘to maintain general supervision over the studies of the probationers in the UK and to personally conduct the men on tours in the Continent and in England’. The first choice fell on the Thomason College of engineering at Roorkee, but as there was neither an inclination, nor the expertise in the forestry sector - the attempt proved unsatisfactory. As such, in 1878 a separate forest school (The Rangers College) was opened at Dehradun under the Government of the NWP but in 1884 the school was transferred to the Government of India. Burma set up its own school in However,1898.taking a cue from the Agriculture Research Institute set up at Pusa in 1905 established with the support of Lord Curzon the then IG of Forests, Eardley Wilmot asked for permission to establish the FRI at Dehradun in 1906. Later, permission was given for appointment of pulp and tan experts on short contracts. During the war years 191418, the young Research Institute was able to afford advice and assistance of critical “minor forest produce” to Britain’s war economy. This included shellac, turpentine, essential oils, and tanning materials for munitions . Timber from Himalayan forests was supplied through the specially created “timber branch for the construction of bridges, piers, wharves, buildings and ships. The general effect of the First World War on Indian forestry was to accelerate the transition from ‘an extractive to a commercial orientation’. The Secretary of State was so impressed with the contribution of the Institute that he approved the enlargement of the Institute and sanctioned a new building to be built at a cost of £1,000,000 over a 450-hectare estate in AccordingDehradun.toFCOrmiston, a contemporary Conservator of Forests, “The period may, perhaps, be summarised as one in which the general structure of forest organization in the field was completed on the sound foundations laidThisearlier.wasshown not only in the expanding revenue resulting from a steady road programme and development of less accessible forests, but in the technical advances and adaptation of classical silvicultural systems leading to a much higher production per acre. Moreover, the subjection of all reserved forests to working plans was a great achievement.’Itwascertainly an achievement for the Empire, but the total forest cover was reduced by half in four decades from 1910 to 1950. Mahesh Sharma New Delhi: Punjab MP Manish Tewari, who was part of G-23, a group of angry Con gress leaders, has raised questions on the election process before the election of Con gress President. He has said that for free and fair elections, it is nec essary that the names of all the voters partici pating in the election of the President should be put on the website of the party. On the other hand, the head of the election authority of Congress, Madhusudan Mistry has said that those who want to see the voter list can go to the party office and see it. He has further said that once the nomina tion is filed, the list will be made available to every candidate. This is a normal process, which does not show anyButdrawback.ManishTewari is a lawyer and he said that the one who has to nom inate, if he does not have the list and has made the wrong people as propos ers, then the nomination will be canceled. This is a baseless argument and just a matter of debate. Because the one who has to nominate will not be a leader who follows any path. Secondly, he can visit more than one state office himself or send any of his associates to see the list. Thirdly, the one who becomes the proposer will know whether he is among the nine thousand people who have to vote in the election of the Presi dent. But since Ghulam Nabi Azad has said in a letter to Sonia Gandhi that all the elections of the organization are sham and farce, so Man ish Tewari too is trying to prove this point.

It is being told that on the day the Chief Minister went on a picnic with the coalition MLAs, he got an idea of the disturbances by the gestures of the Congress MLAs. Therefore, it was decided to send the Congress incharge and state president along to Chattisgarh. Despite this, the JMM sees the danger of the Congress MLAs switching sides.

The celebration of Teacher’s Day fills the festive atmosphere in all the schools and colleges of India. As we celebrate Teachers Day today, City First brings to you sweet messages from students for their teachers who act as the source of light in the world that has been darkened due to ignorance.

eachers Day in India is celebrated on September 5 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr dentasRadhakrishnan.SarvepalliHeservedIndia’sfirstVice-Presi-andsecondPresident after independence, was a renowned academic, and was awarded the Bharat Ratna. There is no question that teaching is a noble vocation that merits just as much love and respect as any other. On Teachers Day, students all throughout the country pay appreciation and tribute to their teachers. The day serves as a reminder of the crucial role that educators play in developing our nation by guiding and instructing the most talented individuals in it. City First brings to you sweet messages from students for their teachers who act as the source of light in the world that has been darkened due to ignorance. As the saying goes, a nation’s children hold the key to its future, and teachers have the power to mentor kids and develop them into future leaders who will determine India’s course. They are crucial to our life because they enable us to succeed in both our professional and entrepreneurial endeavours. They assist us in developing into better people, better members of society, and better representatives of our nation. The purpose of celebrating Teachers Day is to recognise the difficulties, particular roles, and challenges that teachers face on a daily basis. Both students and teachers look forward to Teachers Day. The Day is significant for the kids because it offers them the chance to appreciate the work that their teachers do to make sure they receive a quality education. Similar to children, teachers anticipate the Teachers Day celebration since it honours and recognises their work. Teachers are the true representatives of knowledge and wisdom, and they nurture and prepare students for the future. The real cornerstones of our success are our teachers. They assist us in learning new things, enhancing our abilities, gaining confidence, and determining the best course for success. But despite having such a significant impact on student’s lives and the development of the country, they rarely receive the recognition they merit. So, as a student, it is our duty to thank them at least once a year and Teachers Day gives us an ideal opportunity to do so.
