It’s back to square one for anganwadi workers
First India Bureau Mumbai: The change in the state govern ment has left the an ganwadi workers de serted in Maharash tra. After months of protest, the Maha Vi kas Aghadi (MVA) government had as sured that it would discuss their de mands, such as an in crease in honorarium and pension facilities, in the state Assembly. However, the newly formed Eknath Shindeled government, seem ingly unaware of the development, didn’t raise the topic in the As sembly, bringing the anganwadi workers back to square one. According to Sunita Shelar—an anganwadi worker from Palghar— the honorarium is so low that after support ing our families, we are unable to save money for our future. As a re sult, we asked the previ ous government to pro vide half of the lastdrawn salary as a pen sion after retirement.
For the past year, an ganwadi workers have been at loggerheads with the Women and Child Development (WCD) ministry over long-pend ing demands. First India Bureau Mumbai: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday exhorted teachers to teach sto ries from the Pancha tantra , the book of ancient Indian collec tion of interrelated animal fables, to school students. “Doing so will help the children become more decisive and dis tinguish between right and wrong,” he said af ter inaugurating AM Naik School in Powai area of the city. Shah said the Nation al Educational Policy (NEP) 2020 does not look at education mere ly as a means to land a job, but the policy is rooted in Indian ethos which looks at creating better citizens. He said the education policy is exactly similar to the thoughts of for mer President Sarvapal li Radhakrishnan, whose birthday is celebrated as Teachers’ Day. Shah termed “unfor tunate” the time taken for Radhakrishnan’s deep thinking about teaching and education to get formalized into a policy like NEP. Calling S Rad hakrishnan an ‘adarsh guru’ (ideal teacher), the union minister urged the teaching community to read more about him to understand their own profession better. Stating that he likes visiting schools, Shah said it is the responsi bility of present-day teachers to create the future citizens of India. Given these strategic per ils, why was she elected?
A YouGov opinion poll found a plurality of Conservative members did not want to see Johnson ousted from Num ber 10, despite his record in government. A gulf has emerged between grassroots Conservatives and the wider electorate. If Truss emulates Johnson too closely – as the party seems to want – it is the party that will pay the price.

P
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR AUSTRALIA? Truss will find a series of pressing yet complex issues in her in-tray. The foremost of these will be the cost-ofliving crisis. This will inten sify as winter approaches and energy price caps are lifted, leaving many strug gling to heat their homes and buy food. The industrial ac tion witnessed during the summer, will intensify.
The OBCs which the two governments wanted in the SC category were Kevat, Mallah, Nishad, Kahar, Prajapati, Kumhar, Batham, Rajbhar among others. Their inclusion in the list of Scheduled Castes would have fetched important political points for the two par ties. The Allahabad High Court put paid to their game of one-upmanship by quash ing the three orders. The court ruled that Parliament alone has the power to include a caste in the list of SCs. But the issue can still resurface.

Newly-minted Conservative MPs in such seats fear that, faced with this disdain, their new supporters may switch back to Labour. Additionally, as someone who symbolises continuity with the Johnson government, Truss may struggle in the 20 so-called “Blue Wall” seats in southern England
he United Kingdom now has its third ever female prime minister. Liz Truss was elect ed as leader by grassroots members of the Conserva tives to lead the party – and hence the nation – on a plat form that positioned her as the continuity candidate from Boris Johnson. This result will be cele brated on all sides of British politics.Members of the Conserva tive party – the approximate ly 180,000 people who elected the new leader – will be de lighted that the continuity candidate got over the line. Similarly, strategists for the opposition parties – Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Scottish National Party – will also be delighted that the continuity candidate got over the line. In electing Truss as leader, Conservative members have increased their party’s chances of los ing the next general election. This is because Truss es sentially offers more of the same. She steps into 10 Down ing Street at a moment when the views of the Conservative party and the experience of the wider electorate are di verging. As Britons find themselves in the throes of a cost-of-living crisis, the lead ership debates between Truss and her main opponent, Rishi Sunak, were focused on the extent of tax cuts, weakening the public purse when it is needed most. This was music to the ears of the older and wealthier Conservative mem bers, but a case of “same world, different planet” for the wider electorate. To add insult to injury, Truss disparaged the idea of support for struggling Brit ons as “handouts”. Further more, her views on British workers as “lazy” resurfaced during the leadership con test. This is unlikely to en dear her to those one-time Labour voters in the 45 socalled “Red Wall” seats in northern England that switched to the Johnson-led Conservatives at the 2019 election.Newly-minted Conserva tive MPs in such seats fear that, faced with this disdain, their new supporters may switch back to switchedFormerseatsthement,withwhoAdditionally,Labour.assomeonesymbolisescontinuitytheJohnsongovernTrussmaystrugglein20so-called“BlueWall”insouthernEngland.ConservativevoterstotheLiberalDem ocrats in three recent by-elec tions in such seats, heaping pressure on Johnson to re sign earlier this year. Conservative MPs in this part of England fear that vot ers who were switched off by Johnson’s political tone and governing style, may not warm to Truss’s embrace of the same tactics: hostility to the EU, goading the French, and waging a “war on woke”. North of the border, Truss’s embrace of all things British, from her famous support for British cheese to the self-conscious adoption of Thatcherite imagery, will consolidate support for Scot tish independence. There are only six Conservative MPs in Scotland, but having Truss as leader won’t make the job of retaining seats at the next election any easier.

The next issue is the war in Ukraine. Part of the Russian global strategy is to hope that western states, not least the UK, tire in their support for Ukraine. This will not happen under Truss. She is a firm supporter of Ukraine and can be expected to retain the UK’s current posture of support.

A olitics without the mention of caste is inconceiv able in Uttar Pradesh. Balanc ing Thakurs and Brahmins is not as big an issue as Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and Scheduled Castes. There are parties representing eve ry OBC like Patels, Yadavs, Lodhis, Kurmis, and many more, with each having a fief dom of their own. The OBCs being bigger in numbers at tract greater attention from political parties. To further decide which of the OBCs is bigger, a demand was raised for census of mainly OBCs. The Central government has rejected the demand but Bi har Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is pressing for it. Simultaneously, an attempt was made to declare some sub-castes among OBCs as Scheduled Castes with the ap parent intention of weaken ing the OBC vote bank and changing the contours of politics in states like UP and Bihar. The UP government tried to alter the state’s caste profile through two orders is sued between 2016 and 2019. Through these orders the gov ernment notified 18 OBCs as SC. These notifications were issued by the Akhilesh Yadav government and the BJP in a tussle for non-Yadav votes.
