Jaipur: The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) carried out the analysis of PM2.5 levels in cities for which data is available to understand the trend in both NCAP and nonNCAP cities. In the list, cities of Rajasthan dominate in North India with significant increase in 2019 and 2021. According to data, nationally 16 cities have registered a significant increase (5% or more) in their PM2.5 levels but annual values of 2021 in Jaipur and Udaipur increased by over 20% compared to the 2019. “There is barely any difference in overall PM2.5 trends between cities under NCAP and those outside its ambit. NCAP & NCR cities reflect similar mixed trends in AQI and this means they require a substantial reduction in particulate pollution levels to be able to meet the national ambient AQI,” the report read.

In the survey, conducted by India Today in association with C-Voter in Bihar, Tejash wi bagged 43% votes against 24% for Nitish Kumar.

Five of the six JD(U) MLAs in Manipur joined the ruling BJP on Friday. The lone JDU MLA left in the state is Mo hammad Nasir from Lilong seat. As per grapevine, he is also reportedly set to join the BJP. This is being corrobo rated by several political analysts.Thepolitical upheaval in Manipur is not the first of its kind. In 2020, six of the seven MLAs of the JD(U) legisla tors joined the BJP in Arunachal Pradesh. Last month, the seventh JD(U) MLA also joined the BJP. It may be recalled that while in August, Nitish Ku mar had moved out of the NDA to join the Grand Alli ance. His mega plan is to unite the Opposition parties across the country for the crucial 2024 Lok Sabha elec tions to pose a challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. How successful Nit ish Kumar will be in his en deavour is a major point to be seen.

INDIAN ECONOMY NOW LARGER THAN BRITAIN’S, BUT ISSUES REMAIN ast week India over took Britain as the fifth largest economy with record breaking GDP expansion in the financial quarter AprilJune. It was a big moment for the country which, until about a decade ago, was ranked 11th among large economies. The de velopment not only showcased the India story but also high lighted the troubled phase of the UK’s economy which is facing an energy crisis, high cost of liv ing and unemployment. Brit ain’s some Brexit issues with Europe still remain unresolved. India’s economic growth is be ing keenly watched and appreci ated. As often happens, the downside of India’s growth sto ry is also finding mention in some places. Poverty and ex treme inequality continue to be the two negatives about this suc cess story. The life of aam aadmi has been hit hard by high prices pushed further by the GST on every conceivable product. By 2030 India aims to become an economy bigger than China. By then, hopefully, the yawning rich-poor gap will also reduce to a comfortable level. irst it was Mo hammed Shami and now Arsh deep Singh. Abus ing players and casting aspersions on them because of their religion is a new phenomenon in the country. After Indian pacer Mohammed Shami’s poor bowling performance against Pakistan in last year’s T-20 World Cup, the star bowler was brutally trolled for being a “Pakistani”. Hundreds of messages calling Shami, the only Muslim player in the playing XI for that match, a “traitor” filled his social me dia handles, even after Virat Kohli admitted that his team had been thoroughly out played. That victory was Pa kistan’s first against India in any World Cup. The social media attack on Shami was so vicious that former crick eters like Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh had to step in his sup port. Sehwag tweeted that “anyone who wears the India cap has India in their hearts for more than any online mob. With you Shami…” This time the trolls picked on the young Arshdeep Singh playing in the Asia Cup match against Pakistan for dropping a crucial catch at a key moment in the game. Some social media users even edited his Wikipedia page to insert references to the Khal istan movement. Again, Virat Kohli stepped up to defend the youngster saying that no player willingly drops a catch or misfields. This time the Central government’s IT Ministry also intervened. Wikimedia Foundation’s ex ecutives were asked to ex plain how the inflammatory content was inserted. It is important to push back the trolls out to end In dia’s cultural and religious diversity in sports. India does not believe in having “Hindus only” teams.

LONG TO-DO LIST IN DELHI Nitish Kumar, who came to Delhi with a longish “to-do” list for his ‘Mission Opposi tion’, checked off the first item Monday evening, meet ing Congress’ Rahul Gandhi at his Tughlaq Road resi dence. Nitish, however, told reporters that he had no am bition for the top post. “There is a concerted ef fort to weaken regional par ties. My effort is to unite the Opposition ahead of the gen eral elections. I have no in tention of pitching myself as a prime ministerial candi date,” Kumar told reporters. While Kumar had said that he hoped to meet Opposition leaders for the Mahagath bandhan alliance in Delhi, he has also declared that the visit is meant to bring all the opposition leaders under one umbrella – which is undoubt edly a highly challenging task.On his “wish-list”, Nitish is supposed to meet the Aam Aadmi Party chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejri wal. Efforts to rope him into the Opposition front were botched in 2019, with AAP’s role in ending the UPA gov ernment at the Centre weigh ing heavily on the Congress.

Nitish is also supposed to meet HD Kumaraswamy — the chief of the Janata Dal Secular, who ended the alli ance with the Congress after their government in Karna taka fell through. It may be recalled that the formation of the CongressJDS alliance in 2018 to keep the BJP out of power in Kar nataka had marked the ef forts to form the opposition front.Nitish, according to politi cal grapevine, is also likely to meet Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar, who was the prime mover in the efforts to unite the Oppo sition in 2019; Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, another leader seen as upset with the Congress; and the leaders of the Left which is providing outside support to his government in Bihar.

Meanwhile, amid specula tions over his projection as the Prime Ministerial candi date in 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar slammed BJP leader Sushil Modi, saying “no one takes him seriously.” Kumar was referring to Sushil Ku mar Modi’s recent remarks that the meeting of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his Telangana counter part K Chandrashekar Rao was the “latest comedy show of Opposition unity”. In Lok Sabha, JD(U) has only 16 seats out of the total 543 while it has only 5 MPs in the 245-member Rajya Sabha. JD(U) is currently in power only in Bihar among the 31 states and Union Territories. In the state, Kumar formed the government with the help of Lalu Yadav’s party RJD. It may be noted that RJD has 79 MLAs while JD(U) has only 45 Thelegislatures.numbers, however, do not seem to be in favour in Parliament and Bihar As sembly for Nitish Kumar’s ambition!

Nitish Kumar, a lame duck Chief Minister, is seeing his party’s footprint shrink, not just in Bihar, where it is the third largest, but also outside.”

Sharat K Verma New Delhi: Congress leaders are making all kinds of speculations as to who prepared the draft of the letter that Ghulam Nabi Azad wrote to Sonia Gandhi when he left the Con gress? Party veteran and general secretary Digvijay Singh said that he has known Azad for decades, whatever is written in the letter is not Azad’s language. However, he did not an swer as to whose lan guage it was or from whom Azad got the let ter written and sent to the Congress President. He does not even have an answer that the letter may have been written by someone else, but whatever Azad is saying in interviews in the me dia, whether it is his lan guage or his thinking, what will be said about it? His language on tele vision is also similar to the language of letters. However, Congress leaders had chosen two names earlier. A senior Congress leader said in an informal conversa tion that either Kapil Sibal or Anand Sharma has drafted the letter. But there is a group of Con gress leaders who be lieve that this letter has been drafted from BJP. The things that are most publicized in social me dia by the BJP’s IT cell or the things that are said for Congress and Rahul Gandhi, all the things have been written in Azad’s letter. It was the BJP that started the practice of describing Rahul as immature, childish or a leader who was forced into politics. Those same things are said about him in Azad’s letter as well. On one hand Congress leaders are speculating as to who wrote the letter, while on the other hand Azad is proving that whatever is written in the letter is actually his point.

Lucknow: A major question is doing the rounds within UP bu reaucracy wherein the babus are speculating on the appointment of next DG of UP Police, in a permanent role. So far, the charge of the acting DGP of Uttar Pradesh is being han dled by IPS Dr. Deven dra Singh Chauhan. Since the removal of IPS Mukul Goyal from the post of DGP, UP govt has not been able to ap point a permanent DGP, so govt handed over the command of police chief to Dr. DS Chau han as the acting DGP. The selection of DGP in UP is to be done by the central govern ment, in such a situa tion, after the removal of IPS Mukul Goyal, the UP govt did not immedi ately send the panel of names of IPS officers to Centre. The main rea son for this was that some senior officers would retire and some would have less than 6 months’ time left in re tirement, so this means that they do not come in the race to become DGP. The UP govt has now sent its file to finalize name of the permanent new DGP of UPSC in September and a sum mary report of 36 IPS officers from DG level to ADG level is present in this structionsDGPthatthecausetakenFinaltosopermanentSinghwantscracysourcesKnowledgeablefile.inthebureausaythatUPgovtIPSDrDevendraChauhantobeDGPinUP,hisfilehasbeensentDelhiinSeptember.decisionhastobebyCentrebesomeofficersatCentreareangryMukulwasmadebeforepollsoninofCentre.
