THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL n this magnificent world full of economic disasters, uncertainties and ram pant failures of political systems, India has gener ally been seen by political pundits as a great chaos which has survived all up heavals but sustained its function as a democracy in seven and a half decades that have gone by. That’s a different story that our country was left in a much worse state by the English than the history books narrate. Nevertheless, just like the phoenix, India awoke and rose from its ashes to make its presence felt in the Western world as a self-reliant, powerful and a progressing country. Today, we Indians should bow to both the ideologies, of hard-core liberation fighters like Bose, Azad and Bhagat Singh & the unique strategies by the Mahatma of nonviolence, non-cooperation and civil disobedience that joined into the celebrations of what Nehru called ‘India’s tryst with Destiny’. If we go by the theorists, insufficiency, illiteracy and a deeply graded soci ety structure are all con sidered as unfavourable soil for the sowing and growth of democracy. Yet, while many Afro – Asian countries which achieved Independence around the same time as India terri bly failed to initiate or to hold a democratic set up, Indian press and Judici ary upheld their institu tional autonomy in spite of some periodic pres sures from the federal ex ecutive branch. So, what were the major differences between the failed political systems of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malesia, Turkey, Thai land, Myanmar and many African nations & India? In my personal analysis there are five major rea sons why India stands where it is while the trou bled regions named above collapsed time and again. First and foremost was to preserve inclusivity in our society. This by and large was the most impor tant achievement of India since independence as In dia has survived all chal lenges despite diverse cul tures, despite a long proxy war from across the bor ders and stiff terrorismrelated challenges on do mestic front. Yes, against all odds, India’s secular fabric and its amazing unity in diversity have re mained intact. Next logical mantra was to Work on the goal of selfreliance. The green revolu tion of mid-1960s convert ed agriculture into a mod ern industrial system by adopting technology, high yielding variety (HYV) seeds, mechanised farm tools, irrigation facilities, pesticides and fertilizers. Indeed, it not only made India feed its teeming mil lions but empowered it to export surplus stocks. After the success of Green Revolution, the country embarked upon the idea of the White Revo lution. The objective was to make India a self-de pendent nation & one of Yes, though the country has covered the mosaic flooring of its 75 years long independence history with vibrant and colourful tiles of hard work, toil, sacrifices, intensions and planning, India’s herculean efforts in unemployment, poverty, combatingilliteracy, corruptionandpopulationexplosionhavenotfetcheddividends

FOUR TIMES FASTER THAN REST OF EARTH

he Earth is thethan1.1°cproximatelyapwarmeritwasatstartofthe industrial revolution. That warming has not been uni form, with some regions warming at a far greater pace. One such region is theAArctic.newstudy shows that the Arctic has warmed nearly four times faster than the rest of the world over the past 43 years. This means the Arctic is on av erage around 3°c warmer than it was in 1980. This is alarming, be cause the Arctic contains sensitive and delicately balanced climate compo nents that, if pushed too hard, will respond with global consequences. Why is the Arctic warming so much fast er?: A large part of the ex planation relates to sea ice. This is a thin layer (typi cally one metre to five me tres thick) of sea water that freezes in winter and par tially melts in the summer. The sea ice is covered in a bright layer of snow which reflects around 85% of incoming solar radia tion back out to space. The opposite occurs in the open ocean. As the darkest natural surface on the planet, the ocean absorbs 90% of solar radiation. When covered with sea ice, the Arctic Ocean acts like a large reflective blan ket, reducing the absorp tion of solar radiation. As the sea ice melts, absorp tion rates increase, result ing in a positive feedback loop where the rapid pace of ocean warming further amplifies sea ice melt, con tributing to even faster oceanThiswarming.feedback loop is largely responsible for what is known as Arctic amplifi cation, and is the explana tion for why the Arctic is warming so much more than the rest of the planet.

CONG MLA SEEKS BERTH IN NEW BIHAR CABINET NITISH DEFENDS Z-PLUS SECURITY TO DEPUTY CM TEJASHWI YADAV “NATURAL ALLIANCE, NOT DEAL”, TEJASHWI ON MAHAGATHBANDHAN Patna: The return "Mahagathbandhan"of to power in Bihar seems to have set personal ambitions soaring in the Congress which had been down in the dumps. Chhatrapati Ya dav, MLA from Khagaria Sadar, has shot off a letter to Congress high command, demanding that he be considered, by virtue of his caste, for a berth in the new cabinet headed by CM Nitish Kumar.

HC RAPS TOP COPS ‘ORDERLIES’ON Chennai: Madras HC rapped higher police officials in Tamil Nadu for engaging lower level cops as ‘orderlies’ at their residences for menial jobs, as it rued at the continuance of the “colonial slavery sys tem.” Unless concrete steps are taken to totally wipe out this practice, the court will have no option but opt for other course of action under Constitution, Justice SM Subramaniyam warned.

New Delhi: Bihar DyCM Tejashwi Yadav called the recent tie-up of Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) with Mahagath bandhan “a natural alliance and not a deal”, and also claimed that Bihar will be the largest government jobs providing state within a month. Tejashwi said, “It’s a natural alliance, not a deal. This is the real ‘Mahagath bandhan’ formed by Lalu Yadav ji and Nitish Kumar.”

Mahesh Sharma New Delhi: After five years, the BJP has sud denly come into the op position in Bihar. Till now it was in govern ment with Nitish Ku mar. If we leave out the time from 2013 to 2017, the BJP is in power in Bihar since 2005. Now it has to do the politics of opposition and that too in front of the unit ed strength of Nitish Kumar and Lalu Pras ad. Keep in mind that the politics of Bihar has been revolving around the faces of these two leaders for the last 32 years. In such a situation, BJP has an opportunity to do politics by denttionwillmainstream.party,theYadav,shilbringthissueanti-incumbencymakinganisof32years.ButforBJPwillhavetoanewface.SuModi,NandkishorewhorepresentrulingfaceoftheareoutoftheButtherealsobenocompetiwithstatepresiSanjayJaiswalor Union minister Nity anand Rai. BJP had made Nity anand Rai state presi dent and later Union Minister of State for Home in the hope that if RJD is weakening, he will bring Yadav votes towards BJP. But now that the RJD has become very strong, there is no political need for Nityanand Rai. Sanjay Jaiswal is also a very weak leader and he will not be able to compete with Nitish and Tejashwi. In such a situation, BJP has the option to forward a Kushwaha leader and that leader is Samrat Chaudhary. He is the son of Shakuni Choud hary, the tallest Kushwaha leader of Bihar and has long po litical experience. Sec ondly, he is a good speaker and a fighting leader. The effect of caste politics in Bihar is such that Yadav and Kushwaha cannot live together. Kushwaha votes for Nitish only when he is with BJP. The Kushwaha commu nity has eight percent votes, which Samrat Chaudhary can associ ate with the BJP. If BJP succesfully manages to bring Chirag Paswan with him and puts oth er upper caste and most backward caste leaders behind him, then there can be a fight.

‘Strategist’ Shah gives roadmap to form govt EYEING ODISHA

Sharat K Verma New Delhi: Amit Shah has been the Home Min ister at the Centre for more than three years but till now he has not visited Odisha. For the first time after becom ing the Home Minister, he visited the state re cently. It seems like he was waiting for Drau padi Murmu, who hails from Odisha, to become the President. Soon af ter Murmu became the President, he visited Odisha and claimed that the BJP would soon form its government in the state. One reason for this hope of the BJP is the belief that Naveen Patnaik is old enough and remains ill. He has not made anyone his successor. By taking his close friend Ashwini Vaishnav in its party, BJP has made him min ister of many big minis tries at the center. Through him the BJP is hoping to handle the Biju Janata Dal. But apart from this, it is being told that Amit Shah has shared the roadmap for the next election in the meeting of party workers and leaders. Assembly elec tions in Odisha are held along with the Lok Sab ha and BJP eyes to take advantage of this. The BJP performed well in the Lok Sabha last time but its performance in the Assembly was not the same. The BJP could win only 22 seats in the 147-member assembly.
