I do not have time for those of our country men and women who rush to the United States. After completing their education a majority accept the status of second class citizens. One or two make it to State Legislatures or House of Representatives. Some succeed in business, but mother India is no longer a priority. They encounter not so subtle racism and put up with it. Some even acquire various kinds of accents, which sound phoney and grating. They have made their choice. Good luck, but no respect from this corner. Indian I was born and Indian I shall die

cclaimed author Salman Rushdie is on a ventilator and could lose an eye following a shocking incident of multiple stabbing 33-years after the publication of Satanic Verses. He also suffered a wound to his liver. Poor security at the literary event in New York State was to be blamed for the assailant getting easy access to the target, Rushdie. After attack on Rushdie and mur der of two Hindus in India for sharing Nupur Sharma’s ob jectionable statement on Twitter, there’s every reason for Taslima Nasreen, another author who has taken on the hardliner mullahs, to be wor ried. As for Nupur Sharma, the security around her needs to be vigilant 24x7. These in cidents show the extent of extremism to which an indoc trinated Muslim can go and there’s a need for saner ele ments to step forward. Salman Rushdie went into hiding in 1989 after a fatwa calling for his death was is sued by Ayatollah Khomeini, the late leader of Iran who found his book blasphemous. Because the edict was issued by the Ayatollah, nobody could rescind it as per the Ira nian law. The book was banned in several countries, including India, for its antiProphet contents. Besides the edict, the India-born author carried a reward of $3.3 mil lion on his head. When the Rajiv Gandhi government banned Satanic Verses he faced strong criti cism from the Left liberals who viewed it as an attack on freedom of expression. The right wingers called it ap peasement of minorities. Now the BJP finds itself in an almost similar situation with Nupur Sharma. Free dom of expression is indeed contentious.

Editor-In-Chief: Dr Jagdeesh Chandra Editor: Anita Hada Sangwan responsible for selection of news under the PRB Act am eighteen years older than Independent India. I re member vividly keeping awake till midnight of 14/15 August 1947 to listen to Jawa harlal Nehru’s never to be forgotten speech. “Long years ago we made tryst with destiny, and now the times comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the World sleeps, India will awake to life and free dom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation long sup pressed finds utterance. It is fitting that at this solemn moment we take the pledge of dedication to the service of India and her people and to the larger cause of hu manity…”Thiswas great and mov ing English, but 80% Indians did not understand it. Nehru also disregarded the fact that half of the world was wide awake. A majority of the members of the Constit uent Assembly present in the Central Hall of Parlia ment understood English. The applause was thunder ous. That speech of Nehru lives in our hearts and minds.India of 2022 is spectacu larly different from the India of 1947. There is one vital ele ment that has remained ac tive, unchanged- Democracy. That miracle has been en dowed to the nation by the people of India, not by its elite. The Indian Freedom Movement under the unique leadership of Mahatma Gan dhi was one among the his torical and unforgettable events of the 20th century. India’s freedom movement inspired other countries un der British, French, Dutch, Portuguese and Spain’s im perial/colonial rule. In 1947 Africa had three independent countries, South of Sahara, Ethiopia, South Africa- dedicated to perpetual white rule, even though three fourth of the population was non-white. The third was Liberia. Sev eral African leaders admired Gandhiji, Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia, Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, Chief Lithuli of South Africa. Ahmed Kath rada, a colleague of Mandela, all mention Gandhiji in their memoirs. Kathrada spent 27 years in jail with Mandela. He writes, “My own views on multiculturalism are best summed up in a passage by Gandhiji: I want the culture of all lands to be blown about my house as freely as possi ble. But I refuse to blown off my feet by any.” Kwame Nkrumah of Gha na led the freedom struggle in his colonised country by following Gandhian meth ods, “I described Positive Ac tion as the legitimate and constitutional means…. Non-cooperation based on the principle of absolute non-violence as used by Gan dhi in India.” Lech Walesa, the Polish leader of the movement called, “Solidari ty” and future President mentions Gandhiji several times in his Autobiography; “The Struggle and the Tri umph”. I met him in Warsaw and in New Delhi, when he paid a state visit to India. How do I see the future of India. Unlike the chronic pessimists and congenital grumblers, I am confident of a brighter future for our country. India will become a world power, working in a balanced way for the estab lishment of World peace and goodwill. Poverty will be come a memory and so will joblessness. It goes to the credit of the Modi Govern ment that not a single seri ous communal riot has oc curred in the past decade. I do not have time for those of our country men and women who rush to the United States. After com pleting their education a majority accept the status of second class citizens. One or two make it to State Legislatures or House of Representatives. Some suc ceed in business, but moth er India is no longer a prior ity. They encounter not so subtle racism and put up with it. RUSHDIE WOUNDED Salman Rushdie is among the greatest novelists of the 20th century. “Midnight’s Children” is a classic. He was grievously wounded by a fanatic Muslim youth and is fighting for his life. I wish him an early recovery.

The other is the magnanimity to wards Muslims and Christians by allowing them to stay like commoners but without the right to franchise! Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists will have the right to franchise. The Dharma Sansad’s draft will be taken up for approval at its meeting in the Sangam City, Prayagraj, during the Magh Mela. A new constitution is also being proposed for the Hindu Rashtra, the idea of which was mooted last year, which will have a parliament of religions. The draft proposals make the future of politicians and the idea of India look bleak. The proposals may end up hurting the sentiments of minorities but that’s not relevant for the group bent on changing the nation’s profile. One should not expect the proposals to be amended.

So this time she went to Delhi with a PMPM.DoitoadditionDighashawlcolourpeacockspecialofinMistyfortheTheac cepted her gift whole heartedly. Mamata also told in this interview that she regularly sends Bengal’s special Malda Him Sagar and Laxman Bhog mangoes to the PM every summer. But the next day this inter view was not published. Mamata came to know that her nephew Ab hishek Banerjee had stopped this interview from getting published. Mamata then sum moned Abhishek and expressed her displeas ure, on which Ab hishek said that ‘After reading this interview, it did not seem that it was an interview of Bengal tigress, rather it seemed that we were reading the interview of some state president of BJP.’ Mamta re mained silent. MAMTA’S BET ON PARTHA WRONG R ecently, when Tri namool leader Mamata Banerjee was in Delhi, she called an important meeting of her special core group at the house of her party’s Rajya Sabha MP Sudhan shu Shekhar Rai. Trinamool MPs like gataSauRoy, Sudhanshu Shekhar Rai and Abhishek Ba nerjee attended this tea meeting. Sharing her pain with her party MPs, Mamata said that ‘whenever she thinks about the expansion of the party, no one can take this idea off the ground.’ Mamata called Goa the biggest exam ple of this. Taking a dig at Abhishek, Mamata said that ‘when Par tha’s ‘note scandal’ came to the fore, you im mediately dismissed him from the party without thinking. To day the situation is that he is playing in the hands of central agen cies and that he is even ready to become an ‘ap prover’. In fact, Mamata is worried that if Par tha, who was so close to her, starts playing in the hands of the central government, then the heat of this investiga tion will affect her per sonally too.

Aaditya has been touring across the state, especially the constitu encies of rebel Sena MLAs, as the party fac tion led by his father Uddhav Thackeray fac es an existential crisis. Over the last one-andhalf months, the tone and tenor of the usually calm 32-year-old Aadi tya have taken on a note of aggression. He has dubbed the re bels as “gaddar” or trai tors, “dirt of the nal lah” who “stabbed” his father in the back when he was sick. The language has not gone down well. Shahaji Patil, rebel Sena MLA from Sango la in Solapur, said the young leader was try ing to mimic his grand father, the late Sena founder Bal Thackeray, but “duplication” does not work. “These MLAs are 50, 60 years old. Parents teach children to speak respectfully to elders. But I don’t know wheth er he has been taught that,” Patil said last week.Kishori Pednekar, former Mumbai mayor and one of the Sena leaders leading the charge against the re bels, said Aaditya Thackeray cannot be expected to sit on his hands when the legacy of his grandfather, fur thered by his father Ud dhav, was at stake. “The Shiv Sena is a party with strong ties to its first family. Aaditya has seen all these peo ple (the rebels) since he was a child. Aaditya has seen the close bond be tween these people and his family. So he is natu rally pained by their behaviour,” she said. I n a time when peo ple are eagerly waiting for pumpingitpromisedaKarthikeyareleases,South2comesaspleasantsurprise.Asinthetrailer,isfilledwithhigh-action scenes, a goosebumpsinducing background score by renowned composer, Kaala Bhairava and a largerthan-life cinematogra phy style, the film is every South enthusi ast’s dream. But does the film really deliver the hype that it formed? The story weaves somewhat diverse ide as that are haphazardly put together to form a rather interesting two and half hours. The mystery mythological thriller begins with an archaeologist in Greece who travels long dis tances to know the truth behind some dis coveries he made that date back to Lord Krishna’s time. It then cuts to the origin story of God’s ornament that is passed down to gen erations. Cut back to the original timeline, the movie then drives its focus to our lead hunk, Dr Karthikeya, a lead ing scientist who be lieves in nothing but Science. But due to the insistence of his polar opposite mother, he somehow ends up in Dwarka. This is the moment when the sto ry starts unfolding rap idly into a fast-paced mess filled with cops chasing, several at tacks and some unfath omable circumstances that leave you scratch ing your head. It unrav els how our protagonist is destiny’s child whose purpose in life was to not let the ornament fall into the wrong hands and save the world and humanity from impending doom. Nikhil delivers a per formance that was ex pected from him –breathtaking. Although the script does not offer much to his role as a sci entist, his action scenes and acting takes away the focus from his un derwritten character. Anupama Para meswaran, Srinivasa Reddy and Harsha Chemudu provide good supporting characters that accompany the pro tagonist through his journey of astonish ingly accidental discov eries. Anupama’s Mug dha also is shown to be a helpful decoding hand in the film instead of be ing a damsel in distress. The fact that her rela tionship with Karthikeya does not de velop into a romantic one comes as a breath of fresh air. Aditya as the main villain of the se cret society that wants the doom could have been bigger and better, but it gets away with the story. Anupam Kher’s five-minute appearance is anticipated in the film with a thumping back ground score and overthe-top dialogues that make you Overall, cringe.Karthikeya 2 is a good watch that somehow surpasses its shortcomings to deliv er a film that would entertain the viewers for the next two and half hours.
