THE END OF THE UKRAINE CONFLICT IS NOT IN SIGHT. SUPPLY CHAINS REMAIN DISRUPTED AND THE WHEAT STOCK HAS DRASTICALLY.DECLINED THESE WILL MAKE EFFORTS TO KEEP INFLATION WITHIN REASONABLEDIFFICULTLIMITS F y the late eighteenth century, England had lost all her for ests to the Industrial revolu tion: as such the demand for timber for the Royal Armada and the commercial ships drew the colonial gaze to the forests of India and Burma. As earlyas 1806, the East India Company set up a ‘forest de partment’ and created create a monopoly over teak from the Malabar coast for ship building activities. Over the next three decades, the EIC reserved forests of rosewood, ebony and sandalwood for their ‘exclusive ‘use. However in other parts of the country, especially in Central and North India, forests were treated as wasteland which did not yield any revenue, and Commissioners and Collec tors encouraged the cutting of trees to bring land under the plough, for agriculture operations yielded land reve nue. The legendary commis sioner of Kumaon, George William Trail felt legitimate pride in doubling the land revenue from the Kuman hills. This was also the period when large tracts in Bengal (which included Assam) and Madras presidencies were cleared for plantations of tea, coffee, indigo and opium. However the game chang er was the establishment of railway lines. The first rail way line was established in 1853. In less than two dec ades, the railway network grew from 32 km to 7,678 km, and this required quality sleepers made by the finest trees of shorea robusta (Sal). It was during this period that Lord Dalhousie (1856) sought the assistance of a German officer Dr Dietrich Brandis to organize the forest re sources of India and Bur mese territory. Dalhousie’s successor, Lord Elgin in his despatch to then Secretary of State for India, Sir Charles Wood wrote categorially that forest should henceforth not be treated as ‘wasteland’, but classified as Special State Domain. In 1863, Brandis was appointed as the first Inspector general of Forests, and he helped draft the For est Act of 1865, which though amended in 1878 and 1927 set the ground for the classifica tion of Forests into three categories: Reserved, pro tected and village forests. This led to some conflict and resentment between the forest administration and revenue officials, especially as in several revenue divi sions, as in Kumaon hills, more than fifty percent area was placed under forest. Be that as it may the commercial gains to be made from for estry, and the strategic im portance of laying railway lines made it imperative for the British Raj to organize the Imperial Forest service, and it should be placed on re cord that after the ICS, this was the second All India ser vice to be constituted. The year was 1867, and the first selection to the Indian Impe rial Police were made twen ty-six years later – in 1893. In 1869, FR Desai was the first Indian to be selected for the Forest service, and sent for training to Germany. In the first two decades, 95 offic ers were appointed, but given the very harsh conditions of service, and the prevalence of malaria, the mortality rate was very high: hence the first mottos of the service were Meloria Speramus. TOP TWEETS T rom intending to export one crore tonnes of wheat in 2022-23 to take advantage of the crisis arising out of the Rus sia-Ukraine war, India is now looking at the prospect of having to import wheat. The dramatic change happened between April, when India spoke of “feeding the world”, and August when heat waves ravaged the crop. India was looking to fill in for Ukraine, one of the world’s biggest wheat exporters, based on its reserves and prospects of a bumper crop. With the Ukraine war disrupting the supply chain, several coun tries looked towards India, which supplies only 1 per cent globally, for their wheat requirements. However, in May the government banned wheat export to keep the ris ing prices of the commodity in check, but kept a small window open to honour sup plies promised on May 13 and earlier.Notonly has the extreme weather condition hit the crop production, but the country’s wheat stock in the Central pool at the beginning of August was reported to be 26.6 million tonnes, its lowest since August 2008. A CMIE report attributed the “decline in stock to a more than 56 per cent drop in procurement”. Wheat inflation is already at 12 percent and the domestic consumer is feeling the pinch. The government may thus have to look at the import op tion along with a cut in im port duty to ease the situation in the domestic market. The end of the Ukraine conflict is not in sight. Sup ply chains remain disrupted and the wheat stock has de clined drastically. These will make efforts to keep inflation within reasonable limits difficult.

In his resignation letter Sharma said that he felt left out from decision-making which hurt his self-respect. In Rajasthan, dal-baatichurma is synonymous with rains. It’s especially the elders who’re forever in awe of this combination and relish the local taste with all their hearts even during the festivities.
THE FAMOUS INDIAN CHAI ‘Chai ho jaye’ (let’s have tea) is an emotion when it’s raining cats and dogs in India. And honestly, no matter how humid it gets, chai never gets ditched for any soft drink. Made of powerful spices and herbs like cloves, black pepper, ginger, Tulsi, lemongrass, mint, cardamom, etc., an average Indian tea can indeed turn out to be an elixir treating your cold, body ache and headache. These have been our choices, but do you want to know what Ayurveda suggests eating during the monsoon? Since it’s the weather when the humidity and moisture in the air increase and fresh air is rarely felt, harmful germs and viruses tend to multiply at a faster rate, hence making us fall ill rather easily.
These are India’s most popular tea-time snacks. With fillings of boiled potato and even lentils, these crispy and spicy snacks taste even better in the monsoon. Available round the year at any sweet shop, samosa and kachori are served with either chutney or kadi. In fact, many enjoy these snacks as chaat, with a mix of dahi, chutney, sev namkeen, boiled potatoes, chopped onions and tomatoes.
SAMOSA & KACHORI Indians love themselves a variety of piping hot pakodis made of onion, potato, spinach, cauliflower, brinjal, paneer, etc. These are served with mint and tamarind chutneys and sometimes tomato ketchup as well. The deal is to make the pakodas hot and spicy and enjoy them with hot tea or coffee!
CAULDRON SISTERSS cityfirst@firstindia.co.in ach season, we bring to you a vast list of trending food items so you don’t miss out on relishing any flavour. Come monsoon and we usually have the biggest list which in cludes everything from deep-fried to soups! Ever wondered how does our food choices differ with every weather change? One reason could be the warmth that our bodies seek during winters or rains when there’s a nip in the air. And naturally, our taste diverts towards hot food. Facts or not, we’ve made this list of our favourites that are already a hit with our family and friends during the rains. Let’s check it out: E PAKODI BREADFRITTERS ORAKAPAKODAS
VADA PAV Imagine a spicy aloo bonda (bunda) sandwiched between the paav and served with green chutney and green chilli. Remember butter makes everything better in life, so make sure you make the paav extra buttery.
MOONG BEANS Moong dal is a regular in our kitchen during the rains. From sprouts as breakfast to moong dal cheela (pancake) as light dinners, we truly enjoy this legume. This dal is full of proteins, vitamins and minerals that help boost our immunity during the cold season.
DAL BAATI SOUP CHILLI PANEER This is our family’s favourite monsoon snack. Here’s how we make it: INGREDIENTS: z 500 grams of fried Paneer cubes (tossed in cornflour & chilli garlic paste) z 2 capsicums, chopped into big pieces z 2 onions, chopped into big pieces z 3 green chillies, sliced z 1 tbsp garlic, minced z 2 tbsp oil z 2 tbsp soya sauce z 2 tbsp chilli sauce z 1 tbsp vinegar z 4 tbsp tomato ketchup z 1 tbsp cornstarch z Salt to taste z 5 tbsp water FOR THE SAUCE METHOD: z Mix all the ingre dients for the sauce and keep that mixture aside. z Heat oil in a wok and fry green chilli and garlic. z Add chopped on ions and capsicum to it. Sauté for a couple of minutes. z Next, pour the sauce and stir con tinuously till the mix becomes a little thick. z Add the paneer cubes. Garnish with spring onions & sesame seeds and serve hot!
z According to Ayurveda, one must consume the following items in order to keep their immunity strong throughout the extreme season: z Seasonal veggies: bottle gourd (Lauki), apple gourd (Tinda), lady finger (Bhindi), pumpkin (Kaddu), types of beans z Seasonal fruits: Mausami, apple, plum, coconut (water), banana, yam, sweet potato, etc. z Grains: wheat, ragi, jowar, rice, etc.
