Delhi reports 942 fresh COVID-19 cases on Sunday, no new death reported New Delhi, (PTI): Delhi on Sunday reported 942 fresh COVID-19 cases with a positivity rate of 7.25 per cent, according to data shared by the city health dept. No new death has been reported due to the disease. The fresh cases on Sunday came out of 13,001 tests conducted the previous day. With this, Delhi’s caseload went up to 19,93,823 and the death toll to 26,420.

Pramod Nayak of Gurugram’s Rajiv Nagar was nabbed in Bhangrola village on Saturday. He was wearing a Haryana Police uniform and had a fake identity card, two PAN cards and a debit card on him, they said. According to the police, Nayak was earlier posted as a Class IV employee at the Pataudi police station but was sacked. As per a complaint filed by Bhangrola village resident Balkishan, he met Nayak on Friday evening and he introduced himself as an ASI posted at the Kherki Daula police station. “We felt suspicious and asked him to show his I-card but he denied. New Delhi (PTI): The CBI on Sunday arrested a Lt Col and a subedar major along with two private contactors in a Rs 22.48-lakh bribery case related to awarding tenders at the Ambala Cantonment, officials said. Lt Col Rahul Pawar, Senior Barracks Store Officer, Military Engineer Services (MES) and Subedar Major Pardeep Kumar (MES), Ambala Cantt, were taken into custody, they said. Two contractors Dinesh Kumar and Pritpal have also been arrested, the officials said.“A case was registered against the accused on the allegations of demanding a bribe. The alleged payment of bribe was to ensure that most of tenders/orders from Ambala Cantt are awarded to said private contractors,” the CBI said in a statement. The CBI laid a trap and caught all four redhanded during the bribe transaction of Rs.22.48 Lakh, it said. During searches, the agency recovered Rs 32.50 lakh cash and incriminating documents from the premises of the Lt Col, and Rs 16 lakh was also recovered from the possession of the contractors, it said.

The dramatic change happened between April, when India spoke of “feeding the world”, and August when heat waves ravaged the crop. India was looking to fill in for Ukraine, one of the world’s biggest wheat exporters, based on its reserves and prospects of a bumper crop. With the Ukraine war disrupting the supply chain, several countries looked towards India, which supplies only 1 percent globally, for their wheat requirements. However, in May the government banned wheat export to keep the rising prices of the commodity in check, but kept a small window open to honour supplies promised on May 13 and earlier.Notonly has the extreme weather condition hit the crop production, but the country’s wheat stock in the Central pool at the beginning of August was reported to be 26.6 million tonnes, its lowest since August 2008. A CMIE report attributed the “decline in stock to a more than 56 percent drop in procurement”. Wheat inflation is already at 12 percent and the domestic consumer is feeling the pinch. The government may thus have to look at the import option along with a cut in import duty to ease the situation in the domestic market. The end of the Ukraine conflict is not in sight. Supply chains remain disrupted and the wheat stock has declined drastically. These will make efforts to keep inflation within reasonable limits difficult.
y the late eighteenth century, England had lost all her forests to the Industrial revolution: as such the demand for timber for the Royal Armada and the commercial ships drew the colonial gaze to the forests of India and Burma. As earlyas 1806, the East India Company set up a ‘forest department’ and created create a monopoly over teak from the Malabar coast for ship building activities. Over the next three decades, the EIC reserved forests of rosewood, ebony and sandalwood for their ‘exclusive ‘use. However in other parts of the country, especially in Central and North India, forests were treated as wasteland which did not yield any revenue, and Commissioners and Collectors encouraged the cutting of trees to bring land under the plough, for agriculture operations yielded land revenue. The legendary commissioner of Kumaon, George William Trail felt legitimate pride in doubling the land revenue from the Kuman hills. This was also the period when large tracts in Bengal (which included Assam) and Madras presidencies were cleared for plantations of tea, coffee, indigo and opium. However the game changer was the establishment of railway lines. The first railway line was established in 1853. In less than two decades, the railway network grew from 32 km to 7,678 km, and this required quality sleepers made by the finest trees of shorea robusta (Sal). It was during this period that Lord Dalhousie (1856) sought the assistance of a German officer Dr Dietrich Brandis to organize the forest resources of India and Burmese territory. Dalhousie’s successor, Lord Elgin in his despatch to then Secretary of State for India, Sir Charles Wood wrote categorially that forest should henceforth not be treated as ‘wasteland’, but classified as Special State Domain. In 1863, Brandis was appointed as the first Inspector general of Forests, and he helped draft the Forest Act of 1865, which though amended in 1878 and 1927 set the ground for the classification of Forests into three categories: Reserved, protected and village forests. This led to some conflict and resentment between the forest administration and revenue officials, especially as in several revenue divisions, as in Kumaon hills, more than fifty percent area was placed under forest. Be that as it may the commercial gains to be made from forestry, and the strategic importance of laying railway lines made it imperative for the British Raj to organize the Imperial Forest service, and it should be placed on record that after the ICS, this was the second All India service to be constituted. The year was 1867, and the first selection to the Indian Imperial Police were made twenty-six years later – in 1893. In 1869, FR Desai was the first Indian to be selected for the Forest service, and sent for training to Germany. In the first two decades, 95 officers were appointed, but given the very harsh conditions of service, and the prevalence of malaria, the mortality rate was very high: hence the first mottos of the service were Meloria Speramus. LIC SEES 20% DECLINE IN DEATH CLAIMS New Delhi: Insurance behemoth LIC witnessed a decline of nearly 20% in death claims in the first quarter of this fiscal with the COVID impact seen to be ebbing, though the amount is still higher than pre-2020 levels, officials said.In the June quarter of the previous fiscal, settlement of death claims was to the tune of `7,111 crore, which for Q1 of this year was `5,743 crore, LIC Chairman M R Kumar said.

—PTI DICGC TO MAKE PAYMENTS TO DEPOSITORS OF 17 CO-OP BANKS IN OCTOBER Mumbai: The Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) will be making payments to the eligible depositors of 17 cooperative banks, including eight from Maharashtra, in October. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had imposed several restrictions, including on withdrawals, by depositors of these 17 banks in July in view of their deteriorating financial positions. Of the 17 cooperative banks, eight are in Maharashtra, four in Uttar Pradesh, two in Karnataka, and one each in New Delhi, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal.
However, if the overall market is taken into account and not just listed entities, the RBI’s decision to hike interest rates by a cumulative 140 basis points and banks passing on this increase to home loan borrowers have slowed down sales mometum slightly. Increase in housing prices also had some impact, according to industry exPrices rose by an average 5% annually in the June quarter due to higher input costs, especially that of cement and steel.

In railways, out of 173 projects, 119 are delayed, while for petroleum, 90 out of 142 projects are delayed, as per the latest flash report on infrastructure projects for JuneAbout2022.the road transport and highways sector, the report stated that total original cost of implementation of 825 projects when sanctioned, was `4,90,792.42 crore. This was subsequently anticipated at `5,37,163.29 crore, implying a cost overrun of 9.4%. The expenditure incurred on these projects till June 2022 was `3,21,084.28 crore, which is 59.8% of their anticipated cost. About railways, it said the total original cost of implementation of 173 projects when sanctioned, was `3,72,761.45 crore, which later increased to `6,12,578.9 crore, implying a cost overrun of 64.3%. The expenditure incurred on these projects till June 2022 was `3,29,682.13 crore, or 53.8% of the anticipated cost.

IN CATCH-UP GAME Mumbai (PTI): LIC Mutual Fund, having missed the growth bus in the past three decades of operations, is on a catch-up bid and has set a target of crossing the `1-lakh-croreAUM-mark in the next five years.The past few years have seen the 43-player mutual fund industry growing at an exponential pace both in terms of Assets under management (AUM) and number of folios. The AUM jumped 14% on-year in June 2022 to `37.74 lakh crore, while the number of folios grew to an all-time high of 13.55 crore. Biggest player SBI Mutual Fund cemented its position with 23.7% growth in AUM at `6.47 lakh crore in the month under review, followed by ICICI Prudential MF at `4.65 lakh crore. However, LIC Mutual Fund, all through its 33-plus-years of operations, first as a joint venture with Nomura of Japan, was never in the reckoning in terms of AUM despite being the subsidiary of LIC — the nation’s largest financial powerhouse. Mogadishu: Somali authorities on Sunday ended a deadly attack in which 21 people were killed and dozens more wounded when gunmen stormed a hotel in the capital.Ittook Somali forces more than 30 hours to contain the fighters who had stormed Mogadishu's Hayat Hotel on Friday evening in an assault that started with loudTheexplosions.siege ended around midnight, police commissioner Abdi Hassan Hijar told reporters. Onlookers gathered outside the gates of the badly damaged hotel on Sunday morning, surveying the scene. DAL BAATI SOUP CHILLI PANEER
INGREDIENTS: 500 grams of fried Paneer cubes (tossed in cornflour & chilli garlic paste) 2 capsicums, chopped into big pieces 2 onions, chopped into big pieces 3 green chillies, sliced 1 tbsp garlic, minced 2 tbsp oil 2 tbsp soya sauce 2 tbsp chilli sauce 1 tbsp vinegar 4 tbsp tomato ketchup 1 tbsp cornstarch Salt to taste 5 tbsp water FOR THE SAUCE METHOD: Mix all the ingredients for the sauce and keep that mixture aside. Heat oil in a wok and fry green chilli and garlic. Add chopped onions and capsicum to it. Sauté for a couple of minutes. Next, pour the sauce and stir continuously till the mix becomes a little thick. Add the paneer cubes. Garnish with spring onions & sesame seeds and serve hot!
