More women than men now vote for the BJP. By building toilets, providing homes with piped water, delivering gas cylinders that replace firewood for cooking, and focusing on menstrual health, the BJP has won the trust and support of female voters

ne gets an idea of how religious places of worship prolifer ate in a city or state from the verdict of Kerala High Court which re fused to allow a commercial building to be converted into a mosque as in an area of 5 km there are already 36 mosques lo cated in the building’s vicinity. The situation in Kerala must indeed be exasperating for this is what the judge said that the state has 10 times more reli gious structures than villages and 3.5 times more than hospi tals. The court described the situation thus, “Kerala is ex hausted with religious institu tions and prayer halls…If every devotee of Hindu, Christian, Muslim, Jews, Parsis etc. start to construct religious places and prayer halls near their resi dence, the state will face serious consequence including commu nal disharmony.” The judge said that the holy Quran does not prescribe a mosque in every nook and cranny. The judgment should be fol lowed in other states where reli gious structures keep sprouting.

As independent India celebrates its 75th birthday, western journalists and Americans should recognize India is a robust democracy. Honest assessments are fair and to be lauded, and no one should uncritically accept any narrative, but the recent stories in Associated Press, The Washington Post or The New York Times seem facile at best and dismissive at worst. Women from disadvantaged groups in India’s society are rising to better lives, greater hopes, and hundreds of millions have reason to believe a healthier, brighter future awaits them

he Indian National Congress is im ploding and there can’t be a bigger proof than the high-profile exit of Ghulam Nabi Azad. Senior Supreme Court lawyer Kapil Sibal and Ashwini Kumar had quit the party earlier. Given that both the leaders are members of the G-23. Nearly all G-23 members have taken a stand against the present leadership of the par ty, particularly Rahul Gandhi whom Azad has described as “immature”, and were de manding fair and transparent elections to the top party posts. The resignation comes just be fore Congress’ scheduled “Bharat Jodo Yatra”. The party which can’t hold its own leaders together is talking of unifying the coun try! And with the prevailing state of affairs it also wants to lead an opposition front against the BJP in the 2024 elections even when no other opposition party is willing to give it the pole position. So is it time to write an epi taph for the Indian National Congress? Maybe not, but if the trend continues the end could be well nigh near. Much of what is being witnessed is the result of factionalism. The G23 faction does not want Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot to be given the importance he is getting from the Gandhi family. There’s also the talk of Gehlot contest ing the party’s organisational elections. Gehlot has denied any such move. Perhaps mak ing someone from the dissi dent group the party presi dent could help but that would be the end of the Gandhis. What about Azad himself? A gubernatorial assignment or contesting elections in Kashmir as BJP’s proxy can didate can’t be ruled out. Nearly all G-23 members have taken a stand against the present leadership of the party, particularly Rahul Gandhi whom Azad has described as “immature”, and were demanding fair and transparent elections to the top party posts

Newly independent India’s so cialist state proved adept at highfalutin rhetoric but poor at the delivery of public ser vices. Since Modi came to pow er in 2014, these fundamental services have been prioritized with effective outcomes. Some schemes are noteworthy to un derstand what is going on. The narrative of a fashion able, barrel-chested Modi may have an element of al lure. It may even appeal to some voters. However, this narrative is woefully incom plete. Under Modi, the polls give a sense that the BJP has successfully delivered on is sues that matter to women. Cannily, Modi is cultivating his female voter base. Earlier this year, the prime minister declared: “Women…have blessed us – we have won splendidly in areas where women voters have dominat ed.” He went on to say, “It is our good fortune that BJP has got so much love, so many blessings from mothers-sis ters-daughters.” The narra tive of a fashionable, barrelchested Modi may have an ele ment of allure. It may even appeal to some voters. How ever, this narrative is woefully incomplete. Under Modi, the polls give a sense that the BJP has successfully delivered on issues that matter to women. Cannily, Modi is cultivating his female voter base. Earlier this year, the prime minister declared: “Women…have blessed us – we have won splendidly in areas where women voters have dominat ed.” He went on to say, “It is our good fortune that BJP has got so much love, so many blessings from mothers-sis ters-daughters.” Women seem to have blessed the BJP, and a fair review of the data might reveal this fortune is no mere accident, nor the result of “toxic men” telling women how to vote, but because the Modi government has been successful in improving the domestic lives of women.

The BJP is facing a common refrain: India is a misogynis tic country that disempowers women, and women vote du tifully for the BJP because they are instructed to do so by their men. If that is true, how do we explain women voting for the BJP in greater numbers than men? In 2020, Modi broke a long standing taboo by addressing the issue of menstrual health in his August 15 Independ ence Day speech. He declared “Through 6,000 Jan Ausha dhi centers, about 50 million women have got sanitary pads at [Rupee] 1 . We have worked for women’s empow erment. Navy and Air Force are taking women in combat roles…women are now lead ers.” Note that one rupee is a little over one cent. This means that women can get sanitary napkins at the cheapest rate in the world. Modi’s claim of putting women in positions of power is no empty boast. In Gujarat, he was succeeded as chief minis ter by Anandiben Patel, who is now the governor of UP. This year, Modi’s BJP has elected Draupadi Murmu as president. She is the second woman to hold that office. More impor tantly, she is the first woman who comes from India’s longoppressed scheduled tribes to becomeModi’spresident.outreach to women is part of a longstanding BJP tradition. From the very be ginning, the party created Mahila Morcha, its extreme ly active women’s wing. It had strong female leaders such as Vijaya Raje Scindia and Sushma Swaraj, both of whom died after decades of public service. With Murmu as the head of state, the BJP is sending the signal to wom en from canbackgroundsunderprivilegedthattheytoorisetothetop.

Promoted by Shree Cement Ltd. n the leadup to the 75th anni versary of Indian independ ence, a variety of articles ap peared in the US press writing the epitaph for its democracy. The future of India’s democ racy “looks increasingly bleak,” according to the Associ ated Press, and we learn in The Washington Post that India’s democracy “dies in prime time.” These articles attributed many of India’s woes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Yet few of these articles asked why Modi and his party continue to win elections. One answer might be his success in attracting female voters. Few in the US or the UK realize that Modi’s party has been increasingly successful with women voters. This year key Indian states went to the polls. The BJP did bet ter among women than among men. In India’s most populous state of Uttar Pradesh (UP), 48% of women voted for the BJP in compari son to 44% of the men. De spite the BJP’s UP success, the BBC dryly asked “Are women really thriving in UP as PM Modi claims?” The ar ticle concludes with the quote “Women here have very little freedom. They are told who to vote for and they often vote along with the rest of the family.”

His portfolio was definitely given to Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia but he was not removed from the post of minister. His position is that of a minister without a department, and lodged in jail. In West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee also did not remove Partha Chatterjee for a few days after his arrest, but later Mamata removed Partha from the post of minister. Mamata Banerjee, who has defended her ministers and leaders in any situation, even said that if Partha has committed a mistake, then the party will not interfere in any action according to the law. But the ‘staunch honest’ leader - Kejriwal -has not yet removed his minister arrested for doing hawala business. Now other dimensions have also been added to this, about which a petition was also filed in the court, however, the court refused to consider it. But valid questions were raised in that petition. The petitioner had said that Satyendar Jain has become “mentally unstable” and the law states that a mentally unstable person cannot be made a minister. However, the court said that it cannot remove Jain from the post of minister considering him to be mentally unstable. Even though the court refused to remove him, it is a fact that Jain had said in the ED’s interrogation in the Hawala case that he had lost his memory and that he has forgotten many things. How can he remain a minister even if he has amnesia? First of all, there is no justification to keep him minister after him being lodged in jail, but when he himself is saying that he is forgetting things, then he should not be kept on the post of minister.

The Centre will continue to provide support to the digital ecosystem this year also to encourage further adoption of the digital economy, the finance ministry said, setting clear the government’s thinking on the issue.

J airam Ramesh says that the DNA of GNA (Ghulam Nabi Azad) has become ‘Modimay’. If sources are to be believed, when Ghulam Nabi was in the RS and the LoP, his deep connect with Arun Jaitley, was due to ‘Jammu connection’ of Jaitley’s wife, Dolly. It was Jaitley, who got Azad to meet Modi directly, & that meeting turned into friendship. Modi occasionally invited Azad to meet him, and an intimacy grew between them. This is the reason that when Ghulam Nabi was retiring from the RS, Modi had said in his farewell speech –“We won’t let you sit idle.” The BJP is giving so much importance to Azad only because of the assembly elections slated to take place in Jammu and Kashmir. In the new delimitation, the scope of Jammu has increased and that of Kashmir has decreased. BJP is trying that Ghulam Nabi’s newemergespartyasamajor player in the J& K elections so that it can simultaneously hit Congress, National Conference and Mehbooba’s PDP and this would benefit the BJP indirectly.

AZAD IS UNITING THE OLD LOYALISTSSANJAY G hulam Nabi Azad has sent a 5-page letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi announcing his resignation from the primary membership. In this letter, he has directly blamed Rahul Gandhi for Congress’s current condition. Interestingly, in this letter, Sanjay Gandhi’s name is mentioned more than that of Rajiv Gandhi. Going by the text of the letter, it seems that old Sanjay loyalists may also find an important place in Ghulam Nabi’s new party. He said that he was influenced by the ideas of Gandhi, Nehru, Patel, Bose and Abul Kalam Azad from student life and took over the chairmanship of J& K Youth Congress in 1975-76 after Sanjay Gandhi asked him for this. Azad has questioned the Congress leadership at a time when the Congress is busy preparing for the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’. Does it indicate that the colour of strings of Azad’s lofty ambitions has turned Saffron?

Bohemian style is a fashion style strongly related to hippie fashion, in which natural fabrics, retro patterns, neutrals and warm shades merge with 70s style accents and a flair for statement accessories. City First brings to you some fashionable ideas that are trending in 2022! he Bohemian Style Type is the most casual and carefree of the style types. They mainly stick to earth tones, favouring pieces in deep burgundy and hunter green as well as browns, camel tones, and denim. Never one to shy away from a print, Bohemian fashionistas adore traditional paisley or animal print, particularly when it appears on a top or flowing dress. Long, sweeping shapes are a favourite of bohemian women. They must have plenty of floppy hats, fringe accents, and romantic silk maxi dresses in their closets, as well as willowy large blouses. Boho chic, hippie style, and aesthetic dress are some names for this loose, vibrant clothing trend. Bohemians stand out in a crowd as symbols of a vibrant subculture focused on creativity, poverty, and a disregard for social institutions and customs. They have long flowing hair and rich, albeit threadbare, clothing. Young individuals who wanted to separate themselves from the materialistic lifestyle of previous generations began to be identified with the bohemian look. Even more contemporary counterculture fashions were born from it. By integrating vintage western fashions like prairie skirts and fringed leather jackets, hippies added a nostalgic element to the mix. Although boho chic is frequently embraced in fashion life itself, the desire for personal autonomy, the rejection of contemporary materialistic ideas, the pursuit of utopian goals, and the creation of handcrafted goods continue to be potent countercultures. Boho fashion, or bohemian fashion to give it its full term, has a long history and was frequently used to define an ‘exotic’ sense of clothing worn by artists and writers. It has become a fashion trend that currently includes some of the top gowns and other important pieces for every wardrobe. The hippy movement of the 1960s and 1970s is reflected in boho fashion, which was heavily influenced by Woodstock and the flower power movement. Modern Boho is perfect for what to wear to a concert, combining printcolour,components,handmadeandforalookthatalwaysfeelscarefreeandre-laxed.

DO BOYS NOT GET ABUSED? India had pledged to safeguard its children from all types of sexual exploitation and abuse when it ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1992. fter the Nirbhaya Rape case in Delhi, a committee led by Justice Verma, a former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, was established in December 2012 to make recommendations for amendments to the Criminal Law that would expedite the legal process and strengthen punishment for those found guilty of sexual assault against women. Justice Leila Seth, a former High Court judge, and Gopal Subramanium, a former Solicitor General of India, were the other members of the Committee.OnJanuary 23, 2013, the Committee submitted its report. It included suggestions for changes to the law pertaining to rape, sexual assault, trafficking, child sexual abuse, victim medical examinations, police, and electoral and educational reforms but the government rejected their recommendations and passed legislation making rape a crime against both sexes, making it genderWhatneutral.followed was a lot of backlash from feminist groups. It is important to note that gender neutrality was not the only reason why there was a backlash, but also because they did not take any of the recommendations from the Committee, including recognising marital rape and keeping the age of consent at 16. Marital rape is still, even in 2022, not recognised by our constitution.Prominent women’s rights advocate Flavia Agnes also voiced concern against the bill, “I oppose the proposal to make rape laws genderneutral.” She also added that women’s groups had also protested against gender-neutral Child Sexual Abuse laws.

gender-neutral rape laws. They believe that there should be separate laws, instead, where complaints can be filed against women when there is a clear power dynamic, such as hostel wardens, teachtims are likely to be statistically quite small. On the other hand, around 3 million women face sexual violence every year and 99% of those cases are never reported.Thisis the trolley problem. If rape laws are made gender neutral then it will give a course of justice to male rape victims, but will alsoharm female victims by giving more legal avenues to rapists. On the other hand, if the rape laws are gender specific, then they will deny justice to female on male rape victims. And as is the trolley problem, you run over the side with fewer bodies ...... right? Well however you may choose to answer this moral paradox, the in 2018 activists tried to make rape laws gender neutral once again, the centre said that rape laws cannot be gender neutral after ‘consultation with Women’s Groups. This topic is still a matter of debate amongst feminist groups; with the younger and justtheguesandlaws,vourgenerationinter-sectionalisebeinginfa-ofgender-neutralwhiletheolderexperiencedonear-againstit,holdingviewthatIndiaisnotready.

DO MEN NOT GET RAPED BY WOMEN? There is a misconception that men are more likely to be raped by other men. This misconception originates from rape statistics in the USA. 5,451,000 men reported being ‘forced to penetrate in their lifetime while 1,581,000 men were ‘penetrated by someone else’, hence around four times more men are made to penetrate than that are penetrated by someone else in the US.
