Personnel from the Pimpri Chinchwad po lice traffic department rushed to the spot and helped the chief minis ter’s convoy pass through the area. Deputy Commission er of Police (Traffic) Anand Bhoite said the CM convoy was on the way to Satara. “As a truck and a car broke down blocking two lanes of the Mum bai-Bengaluru highway near Chandani Chowk in Pune, the convoy got stuck at around 8 pm. We immediately rushed to the spot and helped the convoy pass through a third lane,” he said. The convoy was stuck in traffic for 15 minutes. First India Bureau Palghar: Six suspect ed cattle smugglers were arrested for al legedly trying to run over forest depart ment personnel chas ing them in a vehicle in Palghar district, said police officials on Friday. The incident oc curred in the early hours of Thursday when forest guards were checking vehicles at Khandeshwari Naka at Wada in Palghar dis trict, said a senior po liceWhileofficer.the checking was underway, they spotted a pick-up van speeding away and started chasing it, he said.During the chase, the van driver dashed his vehicle twice against the official jeep of the forest department in a bid to cause it to topple over.After some distance, the forest personnel with the help of police overpowered the six men in the van. Latur: A man has been arrested for allegedly break ing into a house and stealing gold jewellery and cash worth Rs3.10 lakh in Latur district, police said on Saturday. Chakur police on Friday arrested Sandipan Nivrati Kamble, a resident of Nalegaon village, for the burglary that took place earlier this week, an official said. The accused had allegedly broken into a house in Malegaon on Tuesday night and decamped with valuables worth Rs3.10 lakh. A case uwas registered and based on a tip-off, the accused was nabbed, added the official.

First India Bureau Mumbai: The Ka mothe police arrested a 23-year-old shop keeper, who was out on bail after spending two years in prison in a sodomizing case in volving a minor, after he pressured the boy into filming videos in a compromising posi tion with his friend and posting it on so cial media. The accused had threatened to make vid eos shot in November 2019 of himself with the 16-year-old boy viral, if he did not ask his father to withdraw the case against him. When the boy refused, the ac cused posted another video on social media. “The accused met him in March 2022 and threat ened to teach him a les son for registering the FIR against him. The ac cused told him to repeat the act with his friend and shoot the videos,” said an official from Ka mothe police station. Fearing the previous videos would be viral, the survivor shot videos with his friend in May 2022 and sent them to the accused. On August 23, the victim was informed about a compromising video of him that was uploaded on Instagram. The minor broke down before his father and told him about his ordeal.

he Indian National Congress is im ploding and there can’t be a bigger proof than the high-profile exit of Ghulam Nabi Azad. Senior Supreme Court lawyer Kapil Sibal and Ashwini Kumar had quit the party earlier. Given that both the leaders are members of the G-23. Nearly all G-23 members have taken a stand against the present leadership of the par ty, particularly Rahul Gandhi whom Azad has described as “immature”, and were de manding fair and transparent elections to the top party posts. The resignation comes just be fore Congress’ scheduled “Bharat Jodo Yatra”. The party which can’t hold its own leaders together is talking of unifying the coun try! And with the prevailing state of affairs it also wants to lead an opposition front against the BJP in the 2024 elections even when no other opposition party is willing to give it the pole position. So is it time to write an epi taph for the Indian National Congress? Maybe not, but if the trend continues the end could be well nigh near. Much of what is being witnessed is the result of factionalism. The G23 faction does not want Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot to be given the importance he is getting from the Gandhi family. There’s also the talk of Gehlot contest ing the party’s organisational elections. Gehlot has denied any such move. Perhaps mak ing someone from the dissi dent group the party presi dent could help but that would be the end of the Gandhis. What about Azad himself? A gubernatorial assignment or contesting elections in Kashmir as BJP’s proxy can didate can’t be ruled out. Since Modi came to pow er in 2014, these fundamental services have been prioritized with effective outcomes. Some schemes are noteworthy to un derstand what is going on. The narrative of a fashion able, barrel-chested Modi may have an element of al lure. It may even appeal to some voters. However, this narrative is woefully incom plete. Under Modi, the polls give a sense that the BJP has successfully delivered on is sues that matter to women. Cannily, Modi is cultivating his female voter base. T n the leadup to the 75th anni versary of Indian independ ence, a variety of articles ap peared in the US press writing the epitaph for its democracy. The future of India’s democ racy “looks increasingly bleak,” according to the Associ ated Press, and we learn in The Washington Post that India’s democracy “dies in prime time.” These articles attributed many of India’s woes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Yet few of these articles asked why Modi and his party continue to win elections. One answer might be his success in attracting female voters. Few in the US or the UK realize that Modi’s party has been increasingly successful with women voters. This year key Indian states went to the polls. The BJP did bet ter among women than among men. In India’s most populous state of Uttar Pradesh (UP), 48% of women voted for the BJP in compari son to 44% of the men. De spite the BJP’s UP success, the BBC dryly asked “Are women really thriving in UP as PM Modi claims?” The ar ticle concludes with the quote “Women here have very little freedom. They are told who to vote for and they often vote along with the rest of the family.”

The BJP is facing a common refrain: India is a misogynis tic country that disempowers women, and women vote du tifully for the BJP because they are instructed to do so by their men. If that is true, how do we explain women voting for the BJP in greater numbers than men? In 2020, Modi broke a long standing taboo by addressing the issue of menstrual health in his August 15 Independ ence Day speech. He declared “Through 6,000 Jan Ausha dhi centers, about 50 million women have got sanitary pads at [Rupee] 1 . We have worked for women’s empow erment. Navy and Air Force are taking women in combat roles…women are now lead ers.” Note that one rupee is a little over one cent. This means that women can get sanitary napkins at the cheapest rate in the world. Modi’s claim of putting women in positions of power is no empty boast. In Gujarat, he was succeeded as chief minis ter by Anandiben Patel, who is now the governor of UP. This year, Modi’s BJP has elected Draupadi Murmu as president. She is the second woman to hold that office. More impor tantly, she is the first woman who comes from India’s longoppressed scheduled tribes to becomeModi’spresident.outreach to women is part of a longstanding BJP tradition. From the very be ginning, the party created Mahila Morcha, its extreme ly active women’s wing. It had strong female leaders such as Vijaya Raje Scindia and Sushma Swaraj, both of whom died after decades of public service. With Murmu as the head of state, the BJP is sending the signal to wom en from canbackgroundsunderprivilegedthattheytoorisetothetop.
As independent India celebrates its 75th birthday, western journalists and Americans should recognize India is a robust democracy. Honest assessments are fair and to be lauded, and no one should uncritically accept any narrative, but the recent stories in Associated Press, The Washington Post or The New York Times seem facile at best and dismissive at worst. Women from disadvantaged groups in India’s society are rising to better lives, greater hopes, and hundreds of millions have reason to believe a healthier, brighter future awaits them

In West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee also did not remove Partha Chatter jee for a few days after his arrest, but later Mamata removed Par tha from the post of minister. Mamata Ba nerjee, who has defend ed her ministers and leaders in any situation, even said that if Partha has committed a mis take, then the party will not interfere in any ac tion according to the law. But the ‘staunch honest’ leader - Kejriwal -has not yet removed his minister arrested for doing hawala business. Now other dimen sions have also been added to this, about which a petition was also filed in the court, however, the court re fused to consider it. But valid questions were raised in that petition. The petitioner had said that Satyendar Jain has become “mentally un stable” and the law states that a mentally unstable person cannot be made a minister. However, the court said that it cannot remove Jain from the post of minister considering him to be mentally un stable. Even though the court refused to remove him, it is a fact that Jain had said in the ED’s in terrogation in the Ha wala case that he had lost his memory and that he has forgotten many things. How can he remain a minister even if he has amnesia? First of all, there is no justification to keep him minister after him being lodged in jail, but when he himself is say ing that he is forgetting things, then he should not be kept on the post of minister.

Hoax bomb threat delays Chennai-Dubai flight Chennai (Agencies): An IndiGo aircraft (6E 65) from Chennai was de layed by six hours on Sat urday after a drunk man who wanted to stop his family from leaving the country made a false bomb threat to the Dubaibound private carrier. The Indigo flight was scheduled to depart at 7.20am on Saturday, but after the control room received an anonymous phone about a bomb threat, the Bomb Detec tion and Disposal Squad (BDDS) were called in. The aircraft was transported to a seclud ed bay as per policy, and security services con ducted a thorough in spection to see whether any explosive materials were planted in the flight. But, nothing was found on the aircraft. In the previous week end ed August 12, the re serves declined $2.238 billion to $570.74 billion. The drop in the reserves during the week ended August 19 was due to a fall in the Foreign Curren cy Assets (FCA) and the gold reserves, as per the Weekly Statistical Supple ment released by RBI on Friday.

New Delhi (Agencies): Fi nance minister Nirmala Sitharaman reiterated gov ernment’s stand to keep the digital payments eco system completely free without levying any charg es to aid its Speakinggrowth.atanevent in Mumbai, Sitharaman said that the government sees digital payments as a pub lic good and that people should be able to access these facilities freely. “We see digital payments as a public good. People should be able to access these facilities freely, so that the digitisation of the Indian economy becomes attractive to them. We in tend to achieve a higher level of transparency through digitisation. Therefore, we do think it’s not yet time for charging for UPI services,” she said. The comments from the finance minister come just a few days after the finance ministry clarified that there are no plans to levy any charges on UPI. The UPI has a zero charge framework from January 1, 2020. The ministry had said that the cost borne by pro viders will have to be recov ered through other means. Last week a discussion paper put out by the Re serve Bank of India sought suggestions on whether charges should be levied on transactions through UPI and other payment systems and interchange fees on cards. The Centre will con tinue to provide support to the digital ecosystem this year also to encourage fur ther adoption of the digital economy, the finance min istry said, setting clear the government’s thinking on the issue.

We are making an expenditure of `15 lakh crore every year for import ing petrol, diesel and other petroleum products. So, this is the time we can di versify agriculture towards the energy and power sec tor,” Gadkari said. He urged the industry to focus on alternative fuels with the help of futuristic technologies.“While65-70% of our population depends on ag riculture, our agricultural growth rate is only 12-13%. And the next move should be cogeneration to increase revenue from sugar. The industry should produce less sugar and more by products, embracing the vision for futuristic tech nologies and using the pow er of leadership to convert knowledge into wealth. This will enable the farm ers to become not only food growers but energy produc ers as well,” he added. The minister further said that the country’s re quirement for sugar was 280 lakh tonnes this year, while the production was more than 360 lakh tonnes. New Delhi: The railways’ catering and ticketing arm IRCTC has withdrawn a controversial tender for hiring a consultant to mon etise its passenger and freight customer data following concerns over privacy, officials said on Friday. IRCTC informed the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology chaired by Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Friday that it was no longer pursuing the tender. “IRCTC has withdrawn the tender in light of the non-approval of the Data Protection Bill,” an IRCTC official informed the panel.

The detention facility will be created consider ing the human rights of the foreign nationals and the government will pro vide all the basic facili ties like accommodation, food, medical treatment, among others, he said. Pune: Three people were arrested by the city police for the August 08 theft of 302 boxes of branded liquor. The accused were identified as Atish alias Pilya Vishwanath Bondar (26), Sagar alias Dadya Mastud (28) and Tanaji Chougule (38)—all hailing from Barshi in Solapur district. They had broken into a warehouse by destroying one of the walls and stole branded liquor worth Rs25,43,203. An FIR was filed at the Hadapsar police station.
Pune: Four unidentified men opened fire at a 40-yearold man on Pune-Solapur highway and robbed him of Rs3.6 crore on Friday morning. According to the com plaint, Bhaveshkumar Patel and his aide Vijaybhai were on their way to Pune. At around 2.30 am, four armed men tried to stop their car at Varkute Budruk village, however, Patel escaped from the spot by speeding the car. The robbers chased them in another vehicle. One of the robbers then fired at Patel’s car, intercepting it.

Jalna: A farmer and his wife allegedly committed suicide in Jalna on Saturday due to debt repayment stress. According to a Gondi police station official, Sanjay Dhebe (45) and Sangeeta Dhebe (42) hanged themselves in their homes in Wadikalya in Ambad tehsil this morning. filmmaking, he men tioned that it has been his passion since a young age. “I used to live in a small town and then I went into jour nalism. So, I couldn’t get time to explore the field. I once thought while writing the script of a movie that I should make a short film, professionally. So, I directed the film and it is called ‘Part Time Job’. Shreya Narayan and Hemant Mahaur are a part of the film with the main protago nist being a child, who is played by Pravar Pandey. We have sent it to several festivals and are awaiting the re sponse. I also have a feature film ahead; this is just the beginning.”
