New Delhi: The Rs 2,000 note was introduced in Nov 2016 under Section 24(1) of the RBI Act, to meet the currency requirement of the economy “in an expeditious manner” after the big demonetisation exercise, in which the legal tender status of all Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 banknotes in circulation at that time was withdrawn, the Reserve Bank of India has said. “With fulfilment of that objective and availability of banknotes in other denominations in adequate quantities, printing of Rs 2000 banknotes was stopped in 2018-19,” RBI said.

Mumbai (ANI): Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das on Monday reiterated that Rs 2,000 notes will continue to be a legal lender, after the Central bank’s announcement that the notes will be withdrawn from circulation. He also said he doesn’t expect a rush in the branches and urged people to not rush to banks.

New Delhi (PTI): The Delhi High Court will hear on Tuesday a public interest litigation against permission to exchange Rs 2,000 denomination notes without obtaining any requisition slip and identity proof. The plea was filed by lawyer Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay who mentioned the case before a bench for an urgent hearing Monday itself. But the court declined request and posted it for Tuesday.
