“This will be a very bad precedent. You can’t do this just because you’re in Delhi,” Justice PS Narasimha said, referring to Sisodia’s request to rule arrest by CBI “illegal”. More on P6

Sisodia and Satyendar Jain quit as ministers

group’s counsel said the governor was bound by the previous rulings which imply that ultimately the test of majority has to be held on the floor of the House.

“The governor was bound by this court’s verdicts and ordered a floor test. What else is he supposed to do,” he said.

The bench also comprising justices MR Shah, Krishna Murari, Hima Kohli and PS Narasimha asked Kaul to specify what relevant materials the governor had, which made him ask for the floor test.

CJI Chandrachud asked why should a democratically elected government, which has been formed, be asked to face a floor test and does the governor, by recogniz ing the rival group, not legitimize the defec tion, which is other wise not permissible under the tenth sched ule. The hearing will continue on Wednesday.

Kejriwal Accepts Resignations Of Sisodia And Jain

J ailed AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain have resigned as Delhi Deputy CM & Health Minister resp, and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has accepted their resignations.

If sentenced to 2 years or more in jail, Sisodia and Jain may lose their seats and can’t contest polls for 6 years. Sisodia arrested by CBI for corruption in formulation and implementation of now-scrapped liquor policy. Jain arrested by ED for his involvement in a money laundering case.

Earlier In The Day Later In The Evening

When the matter came up, earlier in the day, for hearing in the Supreme Court, Singhvi cited the court’s judgment in the Vinod Dua case as the reason why Sisodia should be given relief, after which the court posted matter to 3.45 pm.

When SC took up Sisodia’s request again later in the evening, it said Vinod Dua case has no relevance whatsoever with his case as journalist’s matter was about freedom of speech, expression while his case is about alleged corruption.

When a government is formed, it’s not open to any group to say that we cannot go with this alliance. You, specify what were the compelling reasons which made the governor to ask the then-CM to prove his majority in the House? What prevented the governor asking you to move no confidence motion in the House?
