DRI seizes 24.4 kg of gold smuggled from Bangladesh

New Delhi: Under its ‘Operation Eastern Gateway’, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has arrested eight persons for allegedly smuggling gold from the Bangladesh border and seized 24.4 kg gold worth Rs 14 crore. A syndicate based in Bangladesh, Tripura, Assam and West Bengal was smuggling huge quantities of gold from the neighbouring country to India through the Indo-Bangla border in the state of Tripura, an official release said on Monday. The DRI has launched an operation codenamed ‘Operation Eastern Gateway’, which involved developing the intelligence over a substantial period of time to bust the smuggling modus operandi, the release said.

In the operation, the revenue intelligence agency teams were strategically placed at different locations in the states of West Bengal, Assam and Tripura including at the IndoBangladesh border so that the modus operandi used by the smuggling syndicate could be unearthed, it said.

Based on intelligence inputs, eight persons of the syndicate were apprehended.

Minister’s absence draws ire of Chairman Dhankhar in RS

Union Minister Prahlad Singh Patel was absent from the Rajya Sabha proceedings on Monday, which invited the ire of Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar.

Patel is Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries and Jal Shakti. He was to lay on table important papers. But when his name was called by the chair, he was not in the House. The chair- man said that the concerned minister has to be present in the House for the proceedings. Earlier, the chairman rejected the suspension of business notice moved by AAP MP Sanjay Singh and Opposition MPs resorted to sloganeering. The representatives of 14 opposition met at the chamber of Mallikarjun Kharge in Parliament on Monday and decided to raise the issue.

HIMACHAL PRADESH: FIRE BREAKS OUT IN KULLU

SHED, ONE KILLED

Shimla: A man of Nepali origin was killed after a fire broke out in a shed in Kullu, officials informed on Monday. The incident happened at a shed near the LIC Complex in Sarwari, Kullu in Himachal Pradesh. The deceased has been identified as Jeet Ram (85 years), who got burnt alive in the fire. The fire department reached the spot and brought the fire under control. The officials have taken the deceased’s body into possession, and the cause of the fire is being ascertained.

“The team at Siliguri apprehended four persons, while they were travelling in a train from Badarpur Junction in Assam to Sealdah, at Dalkhola Railway Station in West Bengal and recovered 90 gold strips from their possession, collectively weighing 18.66 kg, valued at Rs 10.66 crores. These strips were hidden in specially-tailored waist belts worn by each of them.”
