BJP MLC decides against accepting pension in support of OPS demand

Mumbai: A new member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council on Monday requested the deputy chairperson not to grant him a pension as a legislator in solidarity with teachers and other state government employees who are on strike for restoring the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLC, Dnyaneshwar Mhatre, is a first-time member in the Upper House and represents the Konkan region teachers’ constituency.

In a letter addressed

Mumbai: On Monday, the Supreme Court gave the nod to list hearing pleas seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the alleged lynching of three people in Palghar district in April 2020. The apex court permitted the listing after it was apprised that the Maharashtra government has consented to the investigation by the agency.

Thane: A 21-year-old man drowned in the sea in Vasai Maharashtra’s Palghar district, an official said on Monday. The deceased, Sahil Sanjay Bhavkar drowned after he ventured into the sea for a swim at Kalam beach in Vasai in Palghar district on Sunday, a fire officer of the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation said. Bhavkar’s body had gotten entangled in a net and was recovered on Monday morning, he said.

Thane: Four developers were arrested from Kalwa township in Thane district for allegedly forging civic documents to construct buildings illegally and selling flats to customers, police said on Monday. A complaint was lodged with the Thane Municipal Corporation by a former councillor regarding the mushrooming of illegal constructions in Kalwa. TMC officials informed the Kalwa police in February that no permission was given to the concerned builders to develop buildings and sought registration of FIRs against them.

Thane: A 37-year-old businessman from Mira Road has been allegedly cheated of Rs33.65 lakh after he was tricked into investing in bitcoins on the false promise of lucrative returns, police said on Monday. The accused individuals demanded a 20% commission and promised guaranteed returns. When the businessman saw $247,210 in his Bitcoin account, he was unable to withdraw due to technical issues. After being told the application was frozen, the accused duo became unreachable. A case was registered against two persons under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code.

Mumbai: A Bangladeshi national was caught at the Mumbai airport while trying to fly out of the country on an Indian passport that had been availed using forged documents, on Saturday. Upon examining the photo gallery on Krishna Debnath’s mobile phone, authorities discovered his identity card containing information about his nationality, birth certificate, and his mother’s identification issued by the government of Bangladesh. Debnath who was stopped before boarding the Mumbai-Kuwait flight was arrested by the Sahar police in a case of cheating, forgery and under the Indian Passport and Foreigners Act.
