Wednesday, March 26, 8:30 am, Makapu‘u Lighthouse

It’s that time of the year when the Humpback whales come to our warm waters in Hawaii to mate, calf, feed, and frolic in the sun, while teaching their young all they need to know about living in their new surroundings. Annually, they make the 3,500+-mile trip from Alaska to Hawaii. So, get out your walking shoes, some sunscreen and perhaps a hat, your camera, and lots of water for our next adventure–a scenic hike up to the Makapu’u Lighthouse lookout. We will meet in the parking lot and gather for our “hike” up to the lookout and if we’re lucky, we may have the opportunity to see some of our visiting whales breaching or slapping their tails on the surface of the water. The view along the way up is spectacular, great for camera buffs. And the two-mile trail is paved, but there is no shade. In addition to the red-roofed Lighthouse that was built in 1909, you will have magnificent views of the windward coast as well as offshore islets. Once at the top, you can truly see forever. On exceptionally clear days, Molokai and Lanai are also visible. We’ll have worked up a hearty appetite by the end of our hike so we will finish our morning with a breakfast (or lunch) at Zippy’s in Koko Marina Shopping Center (on your own).

Post your caption on www.facebook. com/firstprez or email it to shayna@ fpchawaii.org. Caption the most LIKES wins a $10 gift certificate to Ko‘olau Kitchen!

MARCH 2014 | FIRST PRESS

Women’s Way is a residential and outpatient treatment program in Kaimuki for adult and adolescent women and their infants and toddlers. Ke Ola Pono is a therapeutic living program for women in early recovery and their children. These services provide substance abuse treatment specifically designed for women with children. The approach is holistic— addressing physical, psychological, social and family and spiritual concerns. It honors the cultural values of the Hawaiian multiethnic community. The Family Treatment Services aims to break the cycle of chemical dependence; helps children with emotional, behavioral and developmental problems to develop skills to be more successful at home and school; and strengthens the family unit. In addition to monetary support from our church, the Women’s Team plans an Easter event where we share God’s Word, do craft projects and an Easter egg hunt with the children, serve lunch, and give gift bags to each mother and child. We need your help to make this outreach possible! Donate, or come on April 12th and help us with crafts and ministry time with the families. For more information, contact Jenny Sung at jenny@fpchawaii.org or visit the Women's Ministry table at the Fellowship Hall on Sundays.

A Morning Prayer, Part 1

What's the buzz with First Prez people

In the Morning

by Marcia Wright April showers are upon us. Thanks be to God for his abundance of rain and sunshine in our beautiful state. Both the plants and we can start the year anew and clean. Hebrews 12:1 says: "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us." I hope your race is filled with the smiling faces of those you have given to in Jesus’ name. Update on Joe and Barbara Grimes in their new home in Oklahoma: “Being in a “retirement” community isn’t dull. Go Ye Village, our new home, is well tied in with Tahlequah life. Its restaurant fills up with neighbors on Surf-n-Turf and Barbeque nights; both the mayor and the police chief have given presentations since we came; thanks to Northeastern State University we have concerts and recitals; we’re the voting site for this part of town. The most attractive thing for us is that they have room for people who have active Christian ministries. One of the 20 or so Wycliffe people here meets with a group on the Web in which translators and university professors work together on a semantically based Bible commentary series that goes into the kinds of detail that Bible translators need. I now spend much of my time preparing for two translation sessions a week with the Hawaii Pidgin Old Testament translators, and one session by snail mail with another who works without a computer. Our goal is to make it ready for publication as a book, a website (part is already there at pidginbible.org), a smart phone app, a not-so-smart phone app, and audio.” Please continue to pray for Joe and Barbara for their work in translation, and for their health. “Ralph Sprague has recently completed his 37th year as chairman of the Hawaii

International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) an academic computer conference. The conference has ten tracks of computer applications and systems. There were 850 participants at the Hilton Waikoloa on the Big Island of Hawaii with 40% coming from foreign countries. Ten tracks including Collaboration Systems and Technologies; Decision Technologies and Service Sciences; Digital Media: Content and Communication; Electronic Government; Future Electric Power Systems, Smart Grids, Engineering, Economics, Security; Information Technology in Health Care; Internet and the Digital Economy; Knowledge Management Systems; Organizational Systems and Technology; and Software Technology.” Elaine Masters has been awarded 2013 third place by the Christian Writers Award sponsored by Xulon for her book “What the Witch Doctor Taught Me.” She also has a new story published in the latest book from Chicken Soup for the Soul: Miracles Happen. And last but not least there is an interview about her grandson David Verburg titled “The Fastest Man Alive.” You can look it up online. We are sure to see him in the next Summer Olympics! You might have caught the cover story by Chad Pata about Ruthann Yamanaka in MidWeek last month sharing about how her friendship with two women led them to start a support organization for Child & Family Services that is an umbrella agency which runs 30 programs that touch 40,000 annually. A heartwarming story about friendship and hard work that has spanned 30 years! Good job, Ruthann! Keep it up, folks. Keep praying and encouraging and looking for ways to help others along on this journey called life. Never doubt that the LORD walks beside each of us, telling us of good things we can do. Aloha no, manoaw@hawaiiantel.net

In the morning when I wake, I will lift my voice and sing. In the morning when I wake, I will praise my God and King. For the wonders of his love, For His everlasting grace, For His faithfulness each day, I’ll forever seek His face. These lyrics by our own Roslyn Catracchia praise God for His presence, promises, power, protection, pardon, and provision. She reminds us that when we praise Him with song and/or speech, we are ministering to the heart of the Father in heaven. Thank you, Roz. Do you wake up every morning amazed that God loves you?

Give Me Jesus

In the morning when I rise, In the morning when I rise, In the morning when I rise, Give me Jesus. Give me Jesus, give me Jesus, You can have all this world, But give me Jesus. These lyrics, from a traditional spiritual, remind us of our amazing Savior, who delights in our praise and desires us throughout the day. Do you allow your day to be shaped by God’s desire for you? Until next month, jump into His lap in the wee hours of morning. Sing or speak to Him. He will show up. O God of the morning and music: You are the maker of heaven and earth and of lyrics that pulse in the heart of musicians who love you. Your promises are true every morning. You urge us to be like Your son, Jesus, who “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, got up … where He prayed.” But if we can’t visit with You in the morning, we will come to You in the evening. You only ask that we come. Amen.
