The first thing you notice are golf carts zipping people from the parking lot to the front door of the grand ballroom. And there are already people lined up waiting to get in! This must be a bigger deal than you thought.

You are momentarily distracted by the sugary smell of fresh malasadas. You should really get some on the way out to share with everyone at home. Once inside the ballroom, you are overwhelmed by all the lovely items so enticingly displayed. Which way first? Jams and jellies! Christmas decorations! The baked goods are a must. Ooh, what lovely orchid plants, and herbs too. The quilts, oh my! Your children, trailing you, see the Keiki Fun Zone. Aha, they won’t be bored while you shop. But wait, there are many more surprises in the next room—the Chic Boutique—be still, my bargain-loving heart, you say. And then you discover another whole room devoted to the silent auction. What treasures you might uncover in there! Then you realize all this shopping has made you hungry. You gather your children and carry all your packages to will call, and step onto the lanai to sit

down and enjoy a delicious plate of food made on the spot. You wonder how First Prez manages to produce this lovely experience. And why. If you ask someone they will explain, it’s for love—our love for women and children here and in other countries. Each year all the money we take in supports specific mission projects Some of our beneficiaries are Advocates for Africa’s Children, Common Grace, Compassion LDP Student, FPC Youth Mission Scholarships, Made in Hope, Salvation Army–Women’s Way, Shalom Birthing Center, and Tumaini Children’s Home Next year you definitely plan to volunteer. It looks like such fun. Even better, you can bring a friend or relative to help. Maybe you will join the craft group, which meets most of the year. Or, you’ve always wanted to learn to make jam and jelly. You have a favorite cookie recipe that everyone raves over. You could donate some baked goods. Your closet could use cleaning out, and there are lots of nice things in there. The possibilities are endless! Sign up now at the Women’s Ministry table for this year’s Bazaar. It takes everyone to make it a success every year.

Keiki Christmas Musical 2013 by Roslyn Catracchia Mele Kalikimaka! Our first rehearsal is just around the corner. However, this year we are going to have two important meetings before we begin rehearsals.

FIRST MEETING

What: Meeting with the Parents Only When: Sunday, Oct. 20th 12:30–1 pm Where: Children’s Ministry Area During this meeting, we’ll be letting all the parents know what to expect from us and what we need from you and the keiki throughout the rehearsal period.

SECOND MEETING

What: Keiki/Parent Pizza Party and Audition When: Sunday, Oct. 27th 12:30 – 2:00 pm Where: Children’s Ministry Area

to each one sing and speak, finding out what their favorite types of performing are (acting, singing, dancing). While auditions are going on in the next room, the rest of the group will be enjoying a pizza party and watching a video of the Christmas show we will be performing. Rehearsals begin the following week, Nov. 3rd. Our performance will be on Sunday, Dec. 8th at 9:30 AM in the main sanctuary. All kids ages 6 through 13 (grades kindergarten through 8th grade) are welcome to participate. For more details including a complete schedule, contact Roslyn Catracchia at 227-9568.

Men's Dinner: A View from the New—Pastor Tim! Oct. 29, Tues, 6 pm, Fellowship Hall

We all know by now that Pastor Tim is super in the pulpit, and we know a little bit about him (one thing we know is that he’s worked a lot with men in men’s ministry); but who really is this guy named Tim Shaw? What makes Tim tick? The Men’s leadership team offered a Tuesday night podium to Tim and he took it! On that night, October 29, Tim will have been fully installed and be raring to go. And there’ll plenty of Q and A time to “grill” FPC’s newest pastor (not roast, but grill—a friendly grilling). Sign up at the Men’s table or online. Pay $10 at the door.

Hawaii's Own Carnegie Hall Oct. 24, Thurs, 10:30 am, Hawaii Theatre For some of you, it will be your first visit to this prestigious performance center. Now you can go backstage and learn more about this State and Nationally Registered Historic Place. Take another trip back in time and experience part of Hawaii’s historic past, the Hawaii Theatre. Built by Consolidated Amusement back in 1922 and proclaimed the “Pride of the Pacific,” the theatre was once a show place for vaudeville and silent films through the 1920’s, a deluxe movie theater through the 1960’s, gradually falling into disrepair until it finally closed in 1984. In 1986, concerned citizens organized to preserve and restore the Hawaii Theatre by raising funds totaling $20.8 million for the restoration and renovation of the interior, including a hydraulic lift to raise and lower the pipe organ that was used to accompany silent films. In 1992, construction began to transform this time-worn treasure into a magnificent entertainment center for all of Hawaii to enjoy.

After years of tedious, loving restoration led by Malcolm Holzman of Hardy, Holzman, Pfeiffer and Associates of New York, the theatre was rededicated at its grand opening in 1996, while exterior work continued through 2005. The architects employed neoclassical

architecture for the exterior and Corinthian columns, a gilded dome, marble statuary, a silk hanging, and a Lionel Walden Mural in the interior. Recently, the theater was closed for the installation of a new high-quality sound system. The hour-long docent-led tour will conclude with a demonstration of the original Robert Morton Theatre Organ that was brought to Hawaii by Consolidated Amusement in 1922. After the tour is complete, a short walk down Pauahi Street will take us to HASR Bistro, where we will enjoy a delicious lunch. When is all of this happening? Thursday, Oct. 24, at 10:30 am. Parking is available at various garages and municipal lots in the area. Sign up at the Out & About ministry table in Fellowship Hall on Sundays, Oct. 13 and 24. The cost for the tour is $5, with a maximum of 30. After the tour, join us for lunch at HASR Bistro (limit: 25) and lunch is $25.

HIGH SCHOOL FALL RETREAT

It’s time! You’ve made it through the first couple of months of school and it is time for a break. We have the weekend for you. The High School Fall Retreat is coming up on Oct. 11-13 at Camp Erdman. It’s an amazing weekend of worship, night games, small groups, s’mores, and, of course, the Camp Erdman games. They are hard to explain, you just have to experience them.

The subjects will range from faith development in youth, to dealing with social media, to talking about love, sex & dating. Each month we will take on a different topic with presentations by Drew and Cathy Hulse.

The cost of the weekend is $160 dollars. A deposit of $25 is due no later than Sunday, Oct 6th. You can get a brochure at The Gathering or at Uptown, or you can download one from the High School page on the church website. Since it’s the first retreat of the new program year everyone will need to also fill out a new Medical Release Form.

Each night begins at 6:30 with a refreshments and fellowship. After the presentation there will be time for questions and small group. You don’t have to be a regular Old Time attender to come, but you’re welcome every week. What's the buzz with First Prez people by Marcia Wright October is here with the promise of crispness in the air. We now start looking forward to the holidays and family time. Let us continue to thank God for all His goodness to us. Ron Ho is now the Chairman of the UH Foundation board of trustees. He also serves on the College of Engineering Dean’s Council. "Ann and Rick Walkinshaw worked again in Swaziland with Heart for Africa this summer. Their service trip included working at their partner church fitting and distributing 418 pairs of TOMS shoes to children ages 2-18. Project Canaan is a multi-faceted initiative that includes largescale farming, fisheries, poultry houses, a dairy farm, and children’s home caring for 35 orphan babies. They also participated in an opportunity for outreach to the community and feeding the hungry. This was Ann’s ninth and Rick’s eighth service trip to Swaziland with Heart for Africa. Also on the Walkinshaw news front: Rick, after traveling to 72 countries, all 50 states, serving under five presidents and protecting the country from counterfeiters and other bad people, retired from the United States Secret Service with 30 years and 19 days of dedicated service. He is taking some time off before he starts teaching at Remington College as an Adjunct Professor of Law and Criminal Justice.” Thank you for your service, Rick! The Honolulu Shriners Hospital held its 90th birthday celebration in September. Bruce Holmberg, chairman of the hospital’s board of Governors, was interviewed in MidWeek by Nicole Kato, explaining the wonderful changes that have happened at the hospital; not only on the grounds with New Buildings, but within the operating system. Big changes—a new neurologist and dental services, and small ones, too— sharing Diamond Bakery sea animal cookies that the children love! You folks are making a great difference!

Beebe Freitas' surprise party

Darryl Kan and partner have opened the state’s first urgent care center specializing in orthopedic injuries. In an article by Kristen Consillio of the Honolulu Star Advertiser, Drs. Kan and Blum have filled the gap needed for urgent orthopedic care for those whose injuries do not rise to the level of an emergency. Thank you! James Miller’s new book, "Hardwired: Finding the God You Already Know" has hit the book stores. I can’t wait to read it. Hopefully you were able to catch ‘Les Miserables’ at Paliku Theatre; music director Mary Hicks, stage director Michelle Blake, and actors Scott and Zenia Moura. Awesome! Vicki Wiley Lepick was written up in an article about the summer program at the St. Andrew Priory for international students that she directed. This multi-cultural program was the highlight for the summer for many local kids, many of whom were repeats. Celebrating Beebe Freitas’ 75th birthday and 43 years at First Prez was a blast. With spoof and song, food and fun, joy and laughter, friends, family, and the best of all, Miss Beebe! Here’s some Bazaar News. The day is just around the corner. Keep looking for and setting aside those nice useable, saleable items aside till mid October. Know that all your gifts help with FPC’s mission projects around the world. God is doing something among the young singles (20's, 30's, 40's) at First Prez. We are kicking off Kanikapila Night—a place to hang out, network, and invite people into. It is the launch pad to small groups, accountability partners, mentoring relationships, service opportunities, and mission trips. Kanikapila is a Hawaiian word referring to a relaxed time of playing music and hanging out. There will always be music, food (potluck), campfire and s'mores! Please come and invite friends, too.
