Every year, I am shocked by the arrival of Lent. I am impressed with the feeling of January, a month of bitter cold that makes the world seem a bit slower than it really is. Time is more insulated when bound by moments of shoveling snow and scraping car windows. January is a moment to take a breath and slow down to enjoy the beauty of the night. And so every year as January and the beginning of February lull me into a sense of slowing down, Ash Wednesday arrives on the calendar and forces me to remember that time moves forward.
Regardless of the temperature outside, Lent is on its way. Ash Wednesday comes in the middle of this month to remind us of our fragility and mortality as well as to get us moving toward the cross and the Resurrection. This year, as we journey towards Easter, we will do so as Rebels, as those opposing the world at large. We will focus on the book, Renegade Gospel: the Rebel Jesus and the Radical Road to the Cross, by Rev. Mike Slaughter. He writes “Jesus didn’t come to start a religion. The rebel Jesus came with a renegade gospel to start a revolution.” We will study how Christ was a true revolutionary,
turning the world on its head! Join us in Wesley Life Groups, and in worship on Wednesdays and Sundays. We are excited to continue on this journey with Christ toward the world changing event of the Cross and especially, the Resurrection. We hope that you continue in your prayers at 7:12 a.m or 7:12 p.m. Please pray that God’s Spirit breaks through our barriers so that we may continue to do God’s will in the Heart of Sioux Falls.
