Lent Began Febrary 18th Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends at midnight on Easter morning. It is a time of repentance, that is, of recognizing our sin and making changes to become more what God created us to be. By doing this we prepare for Easter. The season lasts for the forty weekdays before Easter. The six Sundays that fall within those forty weekdays are not counted because every Sunday is a little Easter celebrating Jesus’ resurrection. You should have received in the
mail adult and family devotionals and activities to help your family experience this holy season. If you didn’t or would like another copy please contact either myself or Jeri in the church office or check the children’s page of our website. I am very excited to let everyone know that the Children’s Ministry Team has decided to donate 100% of the offerings received in Sunday School to Feeding South Dakota’s Backpack Program! We are calling this endeavor Kids Helping Kids. The Backpack program provides at-risk children with nutritious, easy –to-prepare foods during weekends and holidays when school is not in session. Feeding South Dakota distributes more than 3,550 packages of food each week to children in the Sioux Falls school district and 11 surrounding communities. This means more

than 5,000 children are provided with food. The cost for one these weekend packages is $4.50 which equates to $150 to feed a child for an entire year. The goal for us this year is to raise enough money to feed one child for a year! As of this writing we have $19.50 (only 2 weeks of collecting). We need $130.50 to reach our goal. With 14 Sundays remaining, that is only $9.32 a week. When you put it that way maybe we can raise enough to feed more than one child! I encourage you during the Lenten season to talk to your children about the importance of giving to those less fortunate and that even the young can make a major impact on someone’s life!
Sunday Morning Nursery
Loving childcare is provided for newborns through 4 years old in our bright, friendly nursery located in the north hallway, room 102 from 8:45—12:15 each Sunday to welcome your littlest ones. I am very sad to say that our nursery care provider, Deb Moreman, has had to resign after ministering with our little ones for 2 years. If you know someone 18 year or over that has a calling to work with infants and toddlers please have them call the church office at 605.336.3652.
February was a month full of fun and exciting things. The Middle School Youth wrapped up our panel discussion series which was a great series for the students. We also participated in making birthday bags for the Family Visitation Center. We made 25 bags for the families there. It was a fun opportunity to be a part of. We started the series called God Story. The middle school youth covered the 10 commandments and Meshach, Shadrach and Abednego. This is an exciting series for the youth to walk through and it gave them an opportunity to dig deeper into their faith. The youth did a family night at the Stampede game which was a fundraiser for the mission trip. Looking into March the Middle School Youth are going to continue to go through the God Story series. They will be talking about Jesus Death/ Last Words, Jesus Forgiving Peter and The Holy Spirit. The nice thing about this series is that each

I want to encourage you all to be praying for the Middle School Youth as we navigate through the changes that are coming in our future. Thanks for all of the support you have given the Middle School Program through the years. I am humbled by how much love you show these amazing students.

UMCOR Layette Kit Items It is hard to imagine, but there are families in this country and across the world that do not have the bare necessities for their infants. This is where UMCOR comes in to help meet that need. To partner with UMCOR, we are collecting the items for the Layette Kits. Here are the items we need for the Layette Kits: Baby Sweaters open in the front or hooded sweatshirts that have zippers, diaper pins, onsies, gowns or sleepers, and receiving blankets that are 32 x 32 inches. Thanks to some of our loyal seamstresses, we have quite a supply of receiving blankets, but could use some more. We buy the diapers in bulk to complete the kits. These items can be dropped off in the office. If you have any questions about the UMCOR Kits, please contact Mary Jane Richardson at maryjane@ sio.midco.net or check out the UMCOR website at www.umcor.org.

Staff Focus of the Month Jill Johnson This month we celebrate the addition of Jill Johnson to our staff. Jill will be working as administrative support to our Foundation and some of our church staff. We are excited to have her working here to help our team continue to support the work of our Foundation and help continue to strengthen our many programs. Jill and her husband, Dan, also own Joyful Living Therapy where they offer therapeutic massage, yoga therapy, laughter yoga and ongoing personal and spiritual development classes. And they’re the proud parents of Taylor Johnson, the youth coordinator and contemporary music director here at FUMC. We are so glad to have Jill with us. Please help us in welcoming Jill to our staff team!

H.O.S.T. Group for March & April 2015 March Shepherd: Carol Flynn April Shepherds: Rob & Jane Leonhardt
Address Service Requested
Our monthly H.O.S.T. groups were created so that every family will take one month when they will help our church share in radical hospitality! You will have team shepherds for your month. They will be following up with you as well. This is a great way to be in ministry as a disciple of Jesus Christ. Here are the hospitality opportunities: •Being a greeter at one of our worship services. •Helping with other hospitality opportunities sponsored by the church during March or April. •Helping to provide food for funeral lunches. The goal of this ministry is for every family to help in our ministry of radical hospitality for one month a year. We all know that the more people involved in our hospitality ministry will help us have a greater impact to share the love of Jesus Christ and help support the ministry of our church. Thank you for sharing in this important ministry. If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact us here at the church office.

“As Good As It Gets”
This is a 1997 romantic comedy starring Jack Nicholson (Melvin) as a “misanthropic, homophobic, racist, obsessive-compulsive novelist”, Helen Hunt (Carol) as a single mother with a chronically ill son and Greg Kinnear (Simon) as a gay artist. As the story unfolds, Melvin is unwillingly drawn into the lives of Carol and Simon in ways that make him a more compassionate human being. Both Nicholson and Hunt received Academy Awards for their performance.
