The Media is produced monthly by First United Methodist Church, Sioux Falls, S.D. A sanctuary of Christian hope, love and encouragement in the heart of Sioux Falls.
Transitions Pittsburg Pirates baseball great Willie Stargell said, “Life is one big transition!” The month of May is a season of transitions with graduations, weddings, spring to summer like weather! Likewise, Easter is a season of transition in the life of the church. Easter represents the greatest transition of all--the gift of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead to new life for all.
Will Archer
We will have our own transitions here at First UMC. Will Archer has been the captain of the Sunday Morning Men’s Breakfast ministry for over 23 years. Will has decided that it is time for him to retire from this ministry and pass the baton to others. So on Sunday, May 17, we will be celebrating Will Archer and his leadership of the Sunday Morning Breakfast. In addition, per Will’s request, we will recognize over 55 other men who have over the years participated and served on the Sunday Morning Breakfast crew. Please come and share your word of thanks and gratitude. We will have a short program after the 9:15 worship service. Our MCCI prescription invited us to consider moving the Sunday morning breakfast, but for now the Worship Impact Team will be recommending
and proposing to the congregation that we indeed continue our Sunday Morning Breakfast in the Fellowship Hall. This leads to the next transition conversation. Our Worship Impact Team (Prescription 2 of our MCCI document) has met over the last month and half thinking through our Sunday morning schedule. We have been prayerfully considering how we might enhance our vision and ministry here at Sioux Falls First UMC through our Sunday morning worship schedule. The team has made the following schedule proposal that we would possibly begin with this fall. We have shared this proposal with the Next Generations Prescription 3 team, the music groups, and to the church council. We now want to share it church-wide so we can prayerfully discern as the body of Christ if this is God’s preferred future for our church. The Worship Impact Team proposes the following worship schedule: • 8:30 a.m. Traditional Worship in the Sanctuary • 9:45 a.m. New Format Worship including traditional/ contemporary in the Sanctuary • 11:00 a.m. Modern Worship in the Fellowship Hall In addition, we will offer worship services on Wednesday and Sunday evenings. Our Sunday evening worship
PASTOR BOB RUEDEBUSCH Senior Pastor First United Methodist Church
already exists as an off campus worship service. We believe this schedule and the various styles of worship will help us continue to offer the best options for helping persons experience God in our midst. Look for times and places where you can share your questions and thoughts about this new proposal. This proposal is not the final one, but one where the team covets your general thoughts and reflections. Lastly, enclosed is a letter from Pastor Sara sharing with us that the Cabinet has invited her to be the new pastor at Flame of Faith United Methodist Church in West Fargo, ND. This is a tremendous opportunity for Sara to share her marvelous gifts and abilities with a church community. We celebrate with Sara, Kyle and Teddy! Transitions are emotional moments of walking through changes. However, as followers of Jesus we know that Jesus walks with us. As in Easter, Jesus helps us in the transitions of life. Jesus listens and always provides in the midst of transitions of life. So let us walk closely with Jesus who always sees us through! The church office will be closed on Monday, May 25 for Memorial Day.

You have to experience it!
Step back in time—to see what life was like when Jesus was a kid. Just imagine… • Exploring authentic traditions, • Building strong relationships with other family members, • Trying new crafts and games, • Smelling and tasting new foods, and • Learning from Jesus’ mom, Mary, about God’s incredible love for us. Everything…from the music to the costumes to the Marketplace crafts…absolutely everything has the look, feel, and flavors inspired by ancient Nazareth, where Jesus was a kid. This summer, let’s bring that same wonder and excitement to our church! Be a part of the vacation Bible school at here at First UMC during June 8-11. It’s our goal to reach 100 kids with this program. That’s 100 kids who will grow in their relationship with God! We’re praying that this awesome VBS program will touch children’s hearts and lives with his love. Join in the mission of helping kids in our community discover that • Jesus had a family…we do, too. • Jesus had a name…we do, too. • Jesus had a home…we do, too. • Jesus went to church…we do, too. • Jesus served others…we do, too. As we plan and prepare for Hometown Nazareth VBS, our team cherishes your prayers. Will you pray that God grants us wisdom in planning? Please pray for the right adult ministry partners to join our team. And also pray that God begins working in the hearts of the children who will visit Hometown Nazareth! Watch for more information about this exciting ministry event! Blessings, Co-Chairs, Nan Baker & Rachel Tribble
Ever wonder what Jesus was like as a kid? His mom, Mary can sure tell some stories…like about His incredible birth, or the time the family traveled to Jerusalem for Passover. And wait ‘til you hear what the neighbors in Nazareth thought of the Carpenter’s son! Your kids are about to get the “behind-thescenes” stories, straight from Mary! When God sent Jesus to earth, it wasn’t as a king who lived in a palace, surrounded by servants and wealth. Jesus grew up in a small town, the son of a common carpenter. As kids hear Mary share about Jesus, they’ll discover that God’s Son faced many of the same things we do today, and understands the hard things we go through. You can sign up now online by going to www.sfumc.org and clicking on the Hometown Nazareth banner. You can also sign up at church beginning in May. Cost for this fantastic adventure is $5 per child (maximum family fee $20). You can avoid all costs by signing up to Volunteer to help bring Jesus into the lives of our kids!

Confirmation Sunday will be May 3rd at 9:15am. We will ALI McCORMICK be confirming five students. Bailee Wescott, Caden Sheets, Confirmation & Middle High Youth Leader Kennedy Knuth, Alyssa Munce and Jack Brenneman. First United Methodist Church These students are great leaders and will set the world on fire for Christ. Thanks to all the confirmation teachers this year. Your countless hours of preparation work, teaching, clean up and everything else you did have not gone unnoticed. I greatly appreciate all you do. Those teachers are Amanda Reisner, Nanci Wescott, Nancy Hallenbeck, Dan Olson, Bruce and Shontel Larsen and Curtis Mittendorf. Thanks for all you do!! Thanks to mentors as well you are rock stars!
It never ceases to amaze me how much each one of these youth is like family to each other. Every week when they walk into the youth room there is sense that we are family. Sometimes they argue but at the end of the day there is a deep respect for each other. These students have warmed my heart over the past three years. I look forward to seeing what they will do next not only in youth group but for the Kingdom of God. This month the Middle School Youth have been busy bees.
They have been learning about what it means to be a community that is accepting and forgiving. This series has led to some great discussions particularly around forgiveness and how important that is for Christian to forgive as Christ first forgave them. We have learned what it means to be a community by going on a prayer walk in the neighborhood. It was a definite Holy Spirit at work moment. The Youth welcomed numerous church members who joined them. 35 of the Middle School Youth, parents and friends went to Lifelight Tours here in Sioux Falls. The Youth had a blast.

CALLING ALL READERS:
Good reading material is available, free, at our church library on the second floor. Magazines: The latest issue of
The Christian Century features an article on how children and youth develop positive character traits and on what makes a moral human being. The most recent issue of South Dakota magazine celebrates its 30th anniversary and some of the important stories it has published since 1985. Response, the publication of United Methodist Woman, traces the history of migration in the western hemisphere and examines the way these issues affect society today.
Fiction: Among many
recent purchases is William Kent Krueger’s mystery novel, Ordinary Grace, which has been selected as the South Dakota “One Book” for 2015, and another of Krueger’s recent novels, Heaven’s Keep. Krueger is a Minnesotan and a United Methodist. We also have the early Laura Ingalls Wilder autobiography just published by the South Dakota Historical Society.
Bible Study: Battles of the
Bible relates the history of the wars of ancient Israel. John Shelby Spong’s Reclaiming the Bible for a Non-Religious World argues that scripture can still guide and enlighten modern readers and that its essential message remains significant today.
The Library will be open on Sunday mornings, Wednesday evenings, and Thursday afternoons through May. During the summer, library patrons can borrow a key from the office to check out books.
May MISSION OF THE MONTH
Imagine No Malaria is an extraordinary effort of the United Methodist Church to end preventable death from malaria in Africa.
Malaria is a preventable, treatable disease that breeds poverty and burdens health care. In fact, over 650,000 people die every year from malaria. Imagine No Malaria is related to Nothing But Nets (successful program raising more than $7 million to provide bed nets to families) in Africa. In 2008, building on that success, Imagine No Malaria was created to provide a more comprehensive approach, including funding for prevention,
education, treatment and communication. You may think of Imagine No Malaria as “Nets Plus”.
UMCOR (the United Methodist Committee on Relief) does the majority of the work for Imagine No Malaria, and because of a generous grant from the UN Foundation for administrative costs, all donations go directly to our work in Africa. UMCOR is a well-known and well-respected deliverer of relief and development throughout the world and is committed to a sustainable practice of ending deaths from malaria What that basically means is that they are working with the people of Africa in this endeavor. In a more
practical sense, as much as possible, they purchase the nets in Africa, they train community health workers (who are typically already working in their communities as birth attendants, etc.) to handle education and distribution and they establish in-country health boards who plan and implement strategies against malaria, writing grants for funding received, providing oversight and reporting successes. In fact, one of the reasons we’re focusing on malaria is because at a meeting of the bishops of Africa and some of our denominational leaders, we asked what they needed most and they said “stop malaria.”

REEL FAITH Sunday, May 10th - Mother’s Day Feature Film - “Pat and Mike” Starring Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy and William Ching (Note: Please use the west doors on Duluth Street which will be unlocked from 6:00-6:40 p.m.)
This is a light hearted romantic comedy produced in 1952 and starring two outstanding award winning legends of the film industry. Pat Pemberton (Katharine Hepburn) is a brilliant athlete who loses her confidence whenever her charming but undermining fiancé’ Collier (William Ching) is around. Ladies golf and tennis championships are within her reach. However, she gets flustered by Collier’s presence at the contests. He wants her to give up her goal and marry him, but Pat does not give up on herself that easily. She enlists the help of Mike Conovan (Spencer Tracy), a slightly shady sports promoter. Together they face mobsters, a jealous boxer (Aldo Ray), and a growing mutual attraction. This is the last Reel Faith showing for this season and as promised, it is light hearted in nature while demonstrating significant change in both our culture and the film industry. Bring your favorite movie treats and enjoy a light hearted time together as we close out the Reel Faith 2014-2015 Season. We will start the new season in October.
H.O.S.T. Group for June 2015
June’s Shepherds: Rick & Sonja Gourley
Our monthly H.O.S.T. groups were created so that every family will take one month when they will help our church share in radical hospitality! You will have team shepherds for your month. They will be following up with you as well. This is a great way to be in ministry as a disciple of Jesus Christ. Here are the hospitality opportunities: •Being a greeter at one of our worship services •Helping with other hospitality opportunities sponsored by the church during June. •Helping to provide food for funeral lunches The goal of this ministry is for every family to help in our ministry of radical hospitality for one month a year. We all know that the more people involved in our hospitality ministry will help us have a greater impact to share the love of Jesus Christ and help support the ministry of our church. Thank you for sharing in this important ministry. If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact us at the church office.
