From One Man to Another 2015 Men’s Season Opener Nearly 90 men of First United Methodist Church enjoyed a wonderful experience of Christian Fellowship the evening of August 12 at Leif Ericson Park. New acquaintances were made and old friendships were renewed. It was fun to see how many fathers brought their sons this year! Games and food filled an atmosphere of fellowship and personal witness to the tables as we all enjoyed a wonderful steak dinner, games and laughter. The program, “From One Man to Another—Stop, Breathe, and Pray”, featured Jack Marsh, with Joe Olsen, Jeff Sheets and David Mickelson. Working with Jack, these three men witnessed how Christ and their faith played huge roles in their lives. Men, if you have not attended these openers, you have missed hearing the dynamic personal witness of guys we often see, but do not get to know. When we started this event 11 years ago, we didn’t have anyone who we could count on to speak. We now have over a dozen friends who have given us reason to grow in our own faith and I give thanks to them. My prayer for all of you is to “Stop, Breathe, and Pray” and appreciate the little joys in life God sends your way. Blessings,
Don Ditmanson Don Ditmanson, Men’s Ministry
Don, Great job in leading the charge on this event. Just seeing the other men there, knowing that they are there because of what Christ means to them, gives us all encouragement and renewed strength. And, it was fun to get to know each other better. Great to do the follow-up, and I will get you mine. Thanks for your leadership! Dave

Reaching Our “Next Generation” Mission Field Earlier this year, First UMC engaged in Reaching Our Next Generation Mission Field. A team was put together to discern the needs of our neighborhood and learn how we, as a church, can meet those needs. It is our goal to find ways to connect with, engage, assimilate and disciple new families with children and teens. The team prayerfully discerned the direction we need to take as we move forward. One thing the team knew for sure was that we need a way to learn and study the Bible that includes families. Each week, the church can offer an hour of faith formation for children. Parents and guardians handle the faith formation of children the rest of the week. It is our vision, not only teach our children, but also to equip adults to help our children grow in their faith. After prayerfully considering a variety of Bible study curriculum, a unanimous decision was made to begin the FaithWeaver program. With FaithWeaver, family members explore the same Bible passage in age-appropriate classes. Each week the same Bible truth is fresh on everyone’s heart and mind. You’ll actually see families grow stronger in their faith together. While these programs work great together, each one can also stand alone.

And grades 6 – 12 will gather for a time of outreach and Bible study. FaithWeaver Friends® is the perfect midweek program to build faith and friendships. Through prayer, praise, and journaling, kids deepen their friendship with God. By rotating through activity centers in small groups, kids grow in friendship with one another. And through community service projects, kids learn the blessing of being a friend to those in need.

Church Library Ministry Did you know we had a library here at church? Tucked away in the corner on the second floor of First UMC, you will find one of our best-kept secrets. Our library is home to over 5,000 books! We have something for readers of every age: fiction and nonfiction; children’s books and books for adults; paperbacks, hardcovers, and audio books; storybooks, how-to-books, histories and biographies, thousand-year-old books and today’s best sellers. The main purpose of our church library is to support the mission of the First UMC by supplying our members with a variety of materials that reinforce our message and aid those who want to dig deeper. Our library is also a place to turn when a crisis hits you and your family. We have a large supply of bags filled with resources to help you. Whether you are struggling with illness or the loss of a loved one or you are travelling through the transitions of marriage, raising children, divorce, unemployment, or relocation, we have resources to help. The library is also a place where individuals and families can find entertainment that uplifts spirits and enlightens minds. • Do you have just a few minutes to spare? We have a variety of magazines covering a multitude of interests. • Do you need a place for a meeting? We have a large table with comfortable chairs and a whiteboard. • Where is the closest puppet theatre you may ask? Well right up here in the library we have a corner dedicated to presenting your very own show! Stop by with your family and friends! See the website for library hours - sfumc.org.

Get Connected! Be A Part of Our Small Group Network We understand people are in different places on their faith journey; that’s why our Wednesday night and Sunday morning small groups are so important. We offer many ways for people to learn, grow, connect and be in community. Some small groups are book studies; others are topical. Some meet for only a few weeks; others meet the entire school year. A complete listing of small groups can be found at the Information Center and on-line at sfumc.org. Part of our small group network is short term book studies. Each group lasts for just five weeks. Join us on Sundays at 8:30 and 9:30 am beginning September 20, and Wednesdays at 5 and 6:30 pm beginning September 23. Our first set of book studies are: • The Land Between is a DVD-based small group Bible study providing fresh Biblical insight and hope, guidance, and encouragement for people traveling through difficult transitions. • 50 Ways to Pray. The explosion of interest today in Christian mystics, ancient prayer practices, and guided meditations speaks to a need for more hands-on tools that will help us pray in traditional as well as new and exciting ways. This book is intended to address that need. Sign up for these book studies on-line, on the Connect Card, or at the Information Center in the main lobby. We want to help you connect to the group that will fit your faith and life stage. If you have ideas for a new small group, or would like to be a small group or book study leader, contact Lynne Jones at jonesl@sfumc.org
Breakthrough Prayer: Reboot 6:29 As part of our new season of breakthrough prayer, the Prayer Room (located on the right just before you enter the Sanctuary through the main entrance) has been enhanced with interactive prayer stations and will be open weekly during regular business hours. The prayer stations will be changed periodically to fit with our Sunday morning sermon series, so utilizing the prayer room is another opportunity to connect with the Scripture and sermon shared each Sunday. A listing of the Scriptures and prayer stations can be found on our website. All are welcome to spend time in meditation and prayer in this welcoming and comfortable space. Powerful changes can occur when we are open to experience a deep and sincere connection with God through prayer!
Daily Breakthrough Prayer • God would help us discover new and bold ways to connect with each other and the people in our community. • God would give us the courage to heed His call to serve – in our church, in our community, and in our world. • God would open our hearts to love and care for each other and those in our community, just as he loves and cares for each of us unconditionally. 11
