Blanket Brigade Purpose: Mission; Fellowship Description: The Blanket Brigade meets to tie fleece blankets for Project Warm Up, a local effort that over the past 9 years has distributed more than 11,000 blankets to students in need across the Sioux Empire. Who can join: Anyone! There is no experience necessary, and no sewing is involved. Blest Be The Tie That Binds Purpose: Mission; Fellowship Description: Blest Be The Tie That Binds meets to turn quilt tops into completed quilts by adding backing and batting and tying knots in the center of each quilt square to hold the layers together. Completed quilts are given to various charities and agencies. Who can join: Adults of any age. When and where do you meet: 2nd, 4th and 5th Thursdays of each month at 12:30 pm in Room 103. Bookies Purpose: Education; Faith Development Description: Bookies is First United Methodist Church’s book discussion group. Through the year, the group reads both fiction and nonfiction books. A complete book list is available in September. The discussion format allows for participation by all members and expression of a wide variety of opinions and reactions to the books. Habitat for Humanity Work Crew Purpose: Service Description: Habitat for Humanity of Sioux Falls relies on volunteer help to build houses for families. Our group offers that help once a month. Construction skills and tools are nice to have but not required. Tools are provided by Habitat of Sioux Falls and if you lack the skills you will be paired with someone more experienced. Who can join: This group is open to any adult and children over 16 with parental consent. When and where do you meet: 2nd Saturday of every month, 8:30-11:30 at a designated worksite. Higgins Bible Study Purpose: Bible study Description: Higgins Bible study is named after the late Bob Higgins, a member of First United Methodist Church who had a passion for bringing men together to grow in faith through a Bible study group. The group has now expanded to include women. The curriculum for this year is a video-based series on the Old Testament. Who can join: Adults of any age. Men of Integrity Purpose: Fellowship, Faith Development Description: Our purpose is to build closer and deeper relationships with each other using the small group format as a safe place to bring up life’s issues and challenges and discuss real world solutions that are based in a faith-filled approach that honors those that we love. If you are a listener, a thinker, or can just be a good friend, this is a good place for you. Some groups prefer to do a book or Bible Study; others offer more of a platform for discussion of life and how it affects our faith. Who can join: Men of any age. Reel Faith Purpose: Education; Faith Development; Fellowship Description: Reel Faith is a monthly gathering of people who enjoy movies. After viewing a film, the group discusses the challenges the film presents to living out one’s faith in the real world of everyday living. Who can join: Adults of any age. Salvation Army Nightwatch Canteen Purpose: Service Description: Our church is one of seven United Methodist Churches who serve a Sunday night meal to those who otherwise might not have an opportunity to eat. Every 7th Sunday, we prepare a sack lunch and serve it at two locations. Who can join: Anyone – this is a great opportunity for families or groups to do together. The Banquet Ministry Purpose: Service, Outreach Description: The mission of The Banquet is to equip volunteers to provide food and fellowship to those served through the ministry of The Banquet. We provide a safe place where people can gather, receive nourishment and experience love in action. First United Methodist Church has committed to providing teams people to serve twice a month. Who can join: This group is open to all adults and children 12 and older. When and where do you meet: 3rd Tuesday of each month. United Methodist Women – Faith, Hope, Love in Action Purpose: Fellowship, Mission Support, Study Description: Our local organization of United Methodist Women meets about 4 times a year for food and fellowship, dynamic programs, learning about current mission projects and entertainment. We use our funds to support a variety of mission projects locally and globally. In addition to the large group, some members choose to also be a part of a small group. For Bible study we will begin as one group then split into more defined age groups (18-25) (26-32) (33-40). Who can join: This group is designed for those who are 18-40. This includes, but is not limited to, college students, young professionals, career seekers, artists, average Joes and Janes.
