LAB THREE
MAKE Understanding material properties and qualities through craft ‘The Age of Aquarius’ came to town in 1967, many of those who reveled in this age of ‘hippidom’ are now industry and design leaders.
Schedule: Start Lab Monday 2rd – Post before 11:59pm Thursday 5th
Aim: To investigate personal making. How an objects aesthetic outcome is derived from the craft of making (by engaging properties), and speaks of qualities or personal values.
Challenge: Craft a wearable object for yourself from the provided material, for example a ring.
Materials: You will be provided with flax and fine copper wire after the lecture. Work these materials to become a valuable artifact (object, item) that can be worn on your body. Try to keep it small, look in detail how these two materials gather value and worth as you craft them.
Method: Manipulate the material to become workable, use any methods to construct your artifact i.e. weaving, tying, crushing, knitting etc. Use only the materials provided! You must use both and not add others, although you may dye or ‘impregnate’ the flax to add ‘value’ or personality. Take a great number of photographs of the outcome in context (i.e. being worn). I want to see the material composition so there is no need for full body photos unless you have made a suit. (Photograph in either the photo studio or somewhere you can control lighting and retain a plain background). THEN SELECT ONLY ONE TO POST
Result: You will need to do several experiments before you are satisfied. Note; the image you publish should be of high quality and demonstrate your capability to ‘show’ both craft and material emotion through color, composition, shadow etc. You may carefully apply other techniques i.e. hand drawing or photo‐shop etc to achieve your intentions.
Publish: Submit ONE correctly named image to your sets and the DSDN141 group pool. Name submission image as follows: lastname_firstname_lab3
