American Ballet Theatre October 5–7, 2012

About The Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College The Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, an environment for world-class artistic presentation in the Hudson Valley, was designed by Frank Gehry and opened in 2003. Risk-taking performances and provocative programs take place in the 800-seat Sosnoff Theater, a proscenium-arch space, and in the 220-seat Theater Two, which features a flexible seating configuration. The Center is home to Bard College’s Dance Program and Theater and Performance Program, and host to two annual summer festivals: SummerScape, which offers opera, dance, theater, operetta, film, and cabaret; and the Bard Music Festival, which celebrated its 23rd year in August, with “Saint-Saëns and His World.” The 2013 festival will be devoted to Igor Stravinsky, with a special weekend focusing on the works of Duke Ellington. The Center bears the name of the late Richard B. Fisher, the former chair of Bard College’s Board of Trustees. This magnificent building is a tribute to his vision and leadership. The outstanding arts events that take place here would not be possible without the contributions made by the Friends of the Fisher Center. We are grateful for their support and welcome all donations.

The 2012 fall season at the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts is made possible in part through grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts, as well as through the generous support of the Board of The Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College, the Board of the Bard Music Festival, and the Friends of the Fisher Center.

The Leaves Are Fading Choreography Antony Tudor Staging Amanda McKerrow and John Gardner Music Antonin Dvorˇák Scenery Ming Cho Lee Costumes Patricia Zipprodt Lighting Jennifer Tipton The Leaves Are Fading was created for American Ballet Theatre and was given its World Premiere on July 17, 1975, at the New York State Theater, Lincoln Center, New York City. For this work, Mr. Tudor has chosen primarily from Dvorˇák’s little-known work Cypresses for string quartet, together with other chamber music for strings written by the composer in the 1880s. This performance of The Leaves Are Fading, © 1977 Antony Tudor, is presented by arrangement with the Estate of Antony Tudor and The Antony Tudor Ballet Trust. This production is supported in part by gifts to the Tudor Fund. Nancy Zeckendorf is the Leading Sponsor of Antony Tudor’s The Leaves Are Fading. Tonight’s performance of The Leaves Are Fading was generously sponsored through an endowed gift from Cosby W. and Timothy M. George. Though subtitled “Variations on a Theme of Othello,” this dance is not intended as a choreographic version of Shakespeare’s play. In the form of a pavane and other dances of the high Renaissance, the legend is told of the hapless Moor and his wrongfully suspected wife, and the Moor’s treacherous friend and his wife. The four characters portray the tragedy of Everyman, and the ballet is, therefore, timeless in its implications. The Moor’s Pavane was first performed at the Palmer Auditorium, Connecticut College, New London, Connecticut, at the Second American Dance Festival on August 17, 1949, and danced by José Limón (The Moor), Betty Jones (The Moor’s Wife), Lucas Hoving (His Friend), and Pauline Koner (His Friend’s Wife). The Moor’s Pavane was first performed by American Ballet Theatre on June 27, 1970, at the New York State Theater and danced by Bruce Marks (The Moor), Toni Lander (The Moor’s Wife), Royes Fernandez (His Friend), and Sallie Wilson (His Friend’s Wife). © 1996 José Limón Dance Foundation, Inc. These performances of The Moor’s Pavane, a LimónSM Dance, are presented by arrangement with the José Limón Dance Foundation, Inc., and have been produced in accordance with the Limón StyleSM and Limón TechniqueSM service standards established by the José Limón Dance Foundation, Inc. LimónSM, Limón StyleSM, and Limón TechniqueSM are trade service marks of the José Limón Dance Foundation, Inc. (All rights reserved.) Intermission In the Upper Room Choreography Twyla Tharp Staging Stacy Caddell Music Philip Glass Costume design Norma Kamali Lighting Jennifer Tipton © 1986 Dunvagen Music Publishers, Inc. Used by permission. IN THE UPPER ROOM © Choreography by Twyla Tharp. In the Upper Room was first performed by Twyla Tharp Dance on August 26, 1986, at the Ravinia Festival, Highland Park, Illinois. It entered the repertory of American Ballet Theatre on December 10, 1988, at Segerstrom Hall at the Orange County Performing Arts Center, Costa Mesa, California. Please be advised that this evening’s performance of In the Upper Room uses smoke as a special effect.
