I experienced the programme first hand as a Summer Placement student who then returned as a Graduate and undertook the programme for the two year training period. I can safely say that the time, effort and support I received throughout that period shaped me into the professional I am today and the skills I developed in that period will stay with me forever. To be able to play a part in offering that support to others and providing training to upcoming professionals within Fisher German is a real honour.
If you have that drive, energy and enthusiasm to learn we would love to hear from you.

James
I work within the Property Management and Consultancy Division in the Doncaster Office. The majority of my work involves providing estate management services for private clients or professional consultancy across Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire.
I joined Fisher German primarily because of the people and the growth the company has seen in recent years. I was impressed with the interview process and wanted to be a part of a firm who seemed so passionate about and interested in their colleagues. As a growing firm, there have been plenty of new opportunities which has made my first year here exciting, and it is great to be able to play a small part in this growth. The APC support also seemed very comprehensive – I am now a year into the two-year process and can vouch for this support! The variety of my work means I am out of the office on site visits, inspections and meetings each week and no two days are the same. Fisher German is an excellent choice if you are looking for a growing firm with fresh opportunities, varied work, excellent graduate support and great people.
Martha Herring Rural Land Management, Royal Agricultural University
I work within the Property Management Consultancy Division in the Market Harborough office focusing on Rural Estate Management. I am involved with a wide range of clients ranging from corporate organisations, to private Estates and Charitable Trusts. My main work involves providing a broad range of property management services for residential, commercial, and agricultural properties across the East Midlands. I joined FG because of the great company values and wide range of work that is on offer. This is really emphasised with the national presence FG has which means you can get involved with other aspects of the business. However, being in a smaller, more local office really allows you to build trustworthy relationships with clients and you get to know your area like the back of your hand. FG has an excellent APC process as a graduate which provides a really good structure when entering a new career. I have felt very supported along my journey. FG provides a role for everyone and continues to grow as a business which is brilliant to be a part of.”

I joined FG because of the great company values, nice people and great clients. The recruitment process works really well – the in-depth interviews give you the opportunity to show who you are as a person and get to know who you might be working with. I really like the people at FG, it’s a warm and welcoming team who give you lots of responsibility early on. There’s a lot of work to go around, so you’re always busy!
The graduate training programme gives you the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects for different people. This allows you to see how different parts of the infrastructure industry works. The APC support is also beneficial, the ‘Doctors’ set up means you have someone out of your office to discuss your work with and make sure you are getting all your competencies.
I love being out on site meeting with a range of landowners and utility clients. A lot of my role is negotiating access for maintenance works and ensuring that our clients needs are met, whilst recognising that landowners often have opposing views!

Richard Benson, Divisional Managing Partner - Advisory Services
I joined Fisher German in 2021 after undertaking a BA in Human Geography at Sheffield Hallam University and then an MSc in Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Sheffield.
As a General Practice Planner, every day is different which keeps it exciting. I am often out on site to areas all across the North West looking at anything from potential barn conversions to advising land owners on how to optimize the use out of their land. I have been with Fisher German eight months now and I already have my own clients and I am leading on projects where I liaise with architects, ecologists, transport officers and heritage management professionals, to name a few. It’s a fast-paced environment but it’s amazing to look back at my progress so far and see how I am developing my skills.
Sophie Cragg
MSc Urban and Regional Planning, University of Sheffield
I work out of the Market Harborough office within the Telecommunications team. My day-to-day role varies from client to client, dealing with all aspects to do with telecoms. I have a very varied workload, working on new agreements, lease renewals, wayleave agreements, working with clients on redevelopment plans to remove operators and rent reviews and we have over 500 active clients across the United Kingdom.
Fisher German as a company has a very supportive feel and ensures that employees are at the centre of their focus, this includes having teams within a variety of different extracurricular activities, such as surveyor rugby sevens, cricket, netball and much more. For me, the APC support was a massive pull factor due to the dedicated graduate team, who are the centre piece to ensuring APC success for candidates and since joining Fisher German the support has been fantastic.

Meet our colleagues
I joined Fisher German in August 2021, working as part of the Infrastructure Planning Team, based in the Ashby office. Life at FG has been an excellent start to my career as I am continually involved in significant infrastructure projects which constantly provide new challenges and learning opportunities. In addition, there is a fantastic people culture with lots of social opportunities and events.
My day-to-day work is highly varied and involves highlighting constraints and the planning requirements at the start of projects, preparing and submitting planning applications and going on site visits across the country. This requires me to liaise with numerous stakeholders including Local Authorities, Design Engineers and Ecologists to achieve planning permission for a wide range of infrastructure projects on behalf of a variety of utility clients.
Maxwell Griffin Graduate Planner
I started my placement year with Fisher German in July 2022, as part of my Rural Enterprise and Land Management degree at Harper Adams University. I wanted to join Fisher German due to the excellent level of support offered to placement students and graduates at the start of their careers and throughout their APC.
Throughout my placement, I was working in the Utilities and Infrastructure Team based in the Market Harborough office. My role involved working on large infrastructure projects and I was surprised at the level of responsibility I was given at an early stage. I was the main point of contact between our client, the utility company, and the landowners throughout the scheme, arranging land access, serving statutory notices, and negotiating compensation claims. I enjoyed the opportunity to take ownership of my own projects, to develop relationships with landowners, agents, and clients, and see through the projects from start to finish.
Following the completion of my year in utilities, I was given the opportunity to spend the summer in the Rural Property Management Team. This has given me the ability to broaden my experience, working for a different range of clients on traditional rural estates.
I would highly recommend applying to Fisher German for a placement year. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here, gaining knowledge, experience, and confidence.
I am now halfway through completing a part-time MSc in Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Birmingham. This is a crucial step to becoming a chartered member of the RTPI. On completion of my MSc I look forward to making use of the graduate team who will provide specialist guidance and support leading up to my APC submission.

Tara Foster
Placement Student
I joined the Canterbury office in March 2022, specialising in Infrastructure Services and I was pleasantly surprised with how welcoming everyone was. They made me feel very comfortable despite having no previous experience in this industry as I graduated University with a degree in Business and Marketing Management.
Fisher German’s graduate programme is crucial to its success as a business. This was evident even in the interview process, as it was conducted by Senior Partners, including the Managing Partner. I have been very impressed by Fisher German’s commitment to developing members from the graduate programme as well as providing us with an abundance of resources and training events.
I enjoy that this role is diverse, flexible, people-driven and regularly allows you to be out and about on a range of rural properties.
After completing my first two years at Harper Adams University where I was studying BSc (Hons) Rural Enterprise and Land Management, a RICS Accredited Degree, I joined the Infrastructure Services division to carry out my industry placement year. During that year I worked on a major aviation fuel pipeline network, and thoroughly enjoyed my work and getting to know Fisher German.
The confidence and flexibility Fisher German gave me during my placement year allowed me to gain experience and insights into different divisions and teams to better equip me to decide which direction I wished to progress my career within the industry after I graduated.
I now work within the Compulsory Purchase and Compensation team as a Graduate Surveyor, with my day-to-day role involving the management and progression of Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) schemes. Currently, schemes include road, rail, and flood defence construction with involvement from initial preliminary enquiries to compensation matters. This range means no two days are the same.

I have since moved into the Advisory Services Division as part of the Compulsory Purchase team. Final word from our Managing Partner, Andrew Bridge
I started my career with Fisher German as a graduate surveyor back in July 1995, so when we talk about our graduates today, it’s a subject very close to my heart! Working at Fisher German has provided me with such a breadth of experience. After starting out in estate management, I moved into utilities & infrastructure work before being appointed Chief Operating Officer in 2014, and then Managing Partner in April 2019.
I am extremely proud of the organisation we are today and the way we have handled challenges over the years, including an economic downturn and a global pandemic; we always emerge stronger and even more committed to invest in our colleagues and service our clients to the best of our abilities.
Growth like ours doesn’t happen by accident. Our success can be traced to the right strategic direction, excellent financial management and above all having outstanding people, in the right roles, and allowing them to be the best possible version of themselves across the whole organisation.
At Fisher German, we have personality. Despite our growth, we have maintained a close-knit culture where colleagues can work with peers at all levels, get involved in exciting projects across the UK and really contribute to our success.
We are a great firm with a long history and exciting future growth plans; we are proud of our past and our present, and we work hard to do it justice. We recognise that we have a unique opportunity to make a significant and positive impact on challenges that face society today, something we can achieve through the diverse range of property consultancy services that we provide, from sustainable energy advice and land diversification, through to the safe management of the UK’s utility assets. We are trusted business advisers as well as surveyors, planners and technicians, and we use our expertise to help our clients achieve what they want and create opportunities they didn’t know existed.
Andrew Bridge Managing Partner
For us, it is about finding people who have a passion for their chosen career and want to continue developing both professionally and personally. Don’t for a minute think that we are looking to recruit clones or robots - we would not be the entrepreneurial and pioneering firm we are today, if we did! We’re looking for people who share our values, think outside of the box and inspire others to be the best they can be.
We want to make a genuine contribution to making tomorrow a better place – to do this, we need the support of people who are passionate about making a difference and truly believe in the benefits of what we do.
Above everything, we recognise that everyone is unique and that you have choices. I would strongly recommend you do as much research as possible to find the right organisation for you and wish you all the best in your next steps, whether you pursue a career at Fisher German or elsewhere.
All Chartered Surveyor firms are not the same; it is so very important to find the right firm for you. Build a career with a firm you love and you will never work a day in your life!
